Why did Darth Vader stop Luke?

Because he was supposed to. It was part of the play. And if he hadn't, the Emperor would have been prepared to stop Luke, and then would have made Vader pay for betraying him.

Besides, it served Vader's interests, as well, because he wanted Luke to turn to the Dark Side and join him in killing the Emperor. Where Luke was, he just would have gone postal on EVERYONE.

Hey all

Just caught the end of star wars rotj once again... and had to ponder...

Why did Darth Vader stop Luke from striking down the emperor?

Post you ideas :D

Well it's obvious, doing so would have gained Luke 100 dark side points, dropping him to a lower tier light side score. So when Vader noticed Luke hitting the dark side option and realized that Luke had not checked the "show light/dark conversation choices" in the preferences, he shouted "Noooooo!" and hit the escape button, aborting the conversation and allowing Luke to rechoose and not mess up his alignment.

Vader knew that the emperor couldn't be killed by a mere lightsaber so he blocked Luke in order to try to convert him to the darkside so that TOGETHER they could defeat the emperor completely. In all honesty the emperor would probably have avoided it or blocked it with his force-empowered hands or something anyway. Edited by Bronze_Elemental

Hmm maybe, but wouldn't it been a better demonstation of the darkside to have stop Luke's then feeble attempt to use his lightsaber, thus revealing how futile indeed it would be?

Though this might call for modern fx for him to go all Satele on Luke's saber
