wiggs
Ok, I tried search but didn't find exactly what I was looking for. Basically, what can be mitigated by a shield spec vanguard and what can't? I understand some damage bypasses armor altogether, and a guildie says there's really no point in going shield spec for pvp...further, what gets shielded by my shield? Should I just put a power generator on and go assault spec? However, it does seem to me that even at lvl 26 vs lvl 40's my character is very tough to bring down....though I only have 15 points in shield spec at the moment. Is there a point to sheild spec? Kahuna
Aloha, Shield spec is viable in pvp, anyone that says different hasn't tried it or is playing it wrong. I can easily get 100k damage and over 50k protection when trying and average 9+ medals a round. Does that mean you should go with a Shield spec vs a dps spec, that's up to you as a lot comes down to individual playstyle. But Shield is definitely not pointless. The shield itself is useful against kinetic/energy.
Kesrik
You have a base 20% chance to shield. You cannot shield Tech/Force attacks or Crits. As a Assault Spec Vanguard, my only two shieldable attacks are HIB and Hammer Shot. Also, if either of these two abilities crit, you can't shield their damage. I would still use a shield generator as a Shield Spec just because you'll be using Ion Cell anyways. Your spec will regen ammo when you shield an attack, and also reset the CD of Stock Strike. However, don't put any points into Counter Attack, and use Combat Tech gear instead of Supercommando.
wiggs
Ok...honestly it seems like I shield constantly, and while I realize many attacks bypass my shield I still like the idea of mitigating damage.
wiggs
If I do go assault or tactics or a hybrid do you all still run a shield?
Therar
Taugrim breaks it all down in a post on his site: Understanding SWTOR’s Defense and Shield Mechanics for Tanks in PVPhttp://taugrim.com/2012/01/19/understanding-swtors-avoidance-and-mitigation-mechanics-for-tanks-in-pvp/ He also lists some specs for vanguard, two of them with most points in Shield Specialisthttp://taugrim.com/2012/01/04/guide-to-bounty-hunter-powertech-trooper-vanguard-mechanics-and-pvp/#specs Edited January 26, 2012 by Therar
BardaTheHobo
If I do go assault or tactics or a hybrid do you all still run a shield? I personally do, im running assault all the way to the top with the last 7 points or so in shield spec. I run a mix of dps and tank gear (mostly crit+surge+end+ a little shield/defense (I only have 2 pieces of combat tech gear and the weapon so far so my expertise is still low)) while using Ion cell and guarding a healer. I usually get out with at least 50k+ protection sometimes over 100k (sometimes lower it all depends on the warzone/length) and usually mid 250k damage with highest crits of 2.9k-3.4k Build: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#801hMMZ0cZbIbrzGGMs.
Jetflair
If I do go assault or tactics or a hybrid do you all still run a shield? Depends. With tactics shield yes. With assault I won't bother. While there is some use having ion cell + shield I at least feel it's not worth it with Assault. Can be ofc. gear issues since I am very much dps geared.
