seegullz
In your opinion which of these builds are better. Or is there a mixture of the two that would work best? Also If You Have A Successful Build Please Share!!!! 1: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301hRGbdMboZ0MZbIbbdh.1 2: http://www.ign.com/builds/star-wars-the-old-republic/create?class=powertech&d=050122022212123023000000000000101022203 I also have heard that the advanced prototype is something to stay away from but I very much like that last build. Help and Input are very much appreciated!!!!
shoddow
Well basicly what you do is to trade free dmg that vents heat for somenthing that does as much initial dmg. I'm currently running whit that myself and I cant say i'm really happy with it. Best advice is so try it for yourself and c if you like it. Talking about the Adv prot build. But it beats that hybrid build with light years if you want to tank. I do prefer the second build for pvp aswell. But thats my personal opinion. Libertine
none of those is any good tbh. both look more like gimped dps builds then tank builds. 1) no rebraced armor, why ? increase aim, again, why ? substituting heat blast for retractable blade is bad in prolonged fights, the actual heat venting actually helps believe it or not. Advanced tools in AP > pointless Prototype Burn Enhancers, again pointless, the only fire effects your gonna use is flameburst and flamethrower No intergrated cardio from pyro, why ? No Ion Screen, again, why ? to sum it up, you either want to be a tank or you wanna be dps, this is neither... 2) thats not a tank build, thats a PvP build it might be feasible to tank some normal modes with this but in prolonged fights this is pointless since you either have combustible gas on in which case you do damage but dont vent heat since you cant shield or you have ion gas on which gimps your damage since pyro stuff relies on burn effects. try something like this in stand if you wanna tank http://db.darthhater.com/skill_calc/bounty_hunter/powertech/#::e5fefe5fe5def2ef11ef9ef11 Edited January 24, 2012 by Libertine
Teche
I thought as a tank tree build we wanted to take the Rocket Punch stuff since that seems like our bread and butter. For PVE I would drop No Escape and Jet speed and pick up Iron Fist and Flame Surge, but thats just me. Edited January 24, 2012 by Teche
shoddow
I dont know if I would personally run with that build, but thats just how I play. Main reason is there are lot of stuff in it that doesnt help with tanking. Like no escape, jet speed, -10 secs on cd on tranq dart doesnt help much either, +3% more endurance for 3 points isnt really worth it in my opinion, but like I said to each his own. Personally I would go for http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301GoGrdorotzZMsb.1 there are 2 points in there that arent allocated they can be spend on what ever + dmg on FB, RB or -cd on grapple and FS or +2% in endurance, or extra dmg on railshot. Lezale
The answer to the OP's question lies in how he defines "best." Since we are presumably talking about PvE tanking builds, and can further presume because of this that we are interested in survivability and consistent threat generation, then I would suggest neither of these and instead use the build MorningMusume suggests in his excellent thread specifically about Powertech tanking: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=123306 Edited January 24, 2012 by Lezale
Vidrak
The builds you have are horrible, to say the least. You really have to choose to go tank or DPS. Most of the skills you wasted points in are good for PvE and 100% useless for PvE. The builds I have been playing with are:http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301G0GrdorogzZMsbM.1 and http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301G0GrdorogzZMcbZ0c.1 Those are like pretty much pure tanking builds though. I don't do that well in PvP usually, but I am beast in PvE (which is my focus so far, since PvP is pretty horrible in this game overall). I will probably try out a more offensive spec soon (like the Carolina Parakeet) once I get a little bit better gear. I feel like I overtank many fights in HM's. And I could definitely use some more threat generation. Edited January 24, 2012 by Vidrak

So far (level 25) he is smashing PvE and PvP his only good skill is shielding and grappling people into acid and fire pits
Sefius
That's a pretty random build for a tank. You want to survive and take dmg and leave the dps to other people. Not be bad at both.
Zhijn
This is my build (L47 atm but the planned 50 build): http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301GMGrborogzZMcbZb.1 2 skills from Pyro (rocket punch) can really go anywhere you like, but i like it there for the exstra kick err punch in a fight. Mainly use shield/absorb/end/aim mods stats. Only just started FP'ing stuff so havnt really got that "epic" gear from the commendation vendors yet. Question: should BH specced in shield tanking worry about +defense rating?. I got about 49% shield rating and 39 Absorb, but the defense is something about 10% lol. =d Edited January 25, 2012 by Zhijn
