So there are many posts about the mitigations, shield efficiency, defence and so on, but i think that we need to clear this for anyone, in 1 single thread:

1 - What kind of damage will a tank be able to:

- Evade (Defence)

- Shield (shield rating - absorb)

- Mitigate (Armor)

2 - When stunned or incapacitaded will a tank be able to:

- Evade

- Shield

- Mitigate

3 - What is the cap rating (soft cap) of:

- Defence

- Shield rating

- Shield absorb

4 - What kind of damage will NEVER be mitigated by def-shield-armor?

The following are the damages and attack types (hope it is correct)

Attack types: Melee, Range, Force, Tech

Damage types: Kinetic, Energy, Internal, Elemental

Melee and range attacks are "white" damage and use the weapon damage stat . They can be dodged or parried.

Force and tech attacks are "yellow" damage and use Force Power or Tech Power as the damage stat . They have a base 100% accuracy and can only be 'resisted'. They cannot be dodged or parried

1 - What kind of damage will a tank be able to:

- Evade (Defence) - Ranged and Melee attacks.

- Shield (shield rating - absorb) - Ranged and Melee attacks

- Mitigate (Armor) - Kinetic and Energy damage (Which can come from any type of attack, Ranged/Melee/Tech/Force).

Examples:

Ravage - A Melee Attack which deals Weapon Damage (Energy/Kinetic depending on equipped weapon type). This attack is subject to Def/Shield and is mitigated by armor.

Snipe - A Ranged Attack which deals Weapon Damage (Usually Energy). This attack is subject to Def/Shield and is mitigated by armor.

Force Lightning - A Force Attack which deals Energy Damage. Bypasses Def/Shield is but mitigated by armor.

Shiv - A Tech Attack which deals Kinetic Damage. Bypasses Def/Shield but is mitigated by armor.

Flame Burst - A Tech Attack which deals Elemental Damage. Bypasses Def/Shield and is unmitigated by armor.

Affliction - A Force Attack which applies an Internal Damage over time effect. Bypasses Def/Shield and is unmitigated by armor.

2 - When stunned or incapacitaded will a tank be able to:

- Evade - no (Not that my testing concluded anyway, though this wasn't the focus)

- Shield - yes (Tested by taking a couple Rifle Shot volleys after Debilitate)

- Mitigate - With armor and damage reduction, yes

4 - What kind of damage will NEVER be mitigated by def-shield-armor?

Any Elemental or Internal based attack currently in game will be classified as Tech or Force and bypass all defenses entirely. An example you're familiar with is Flame Burst or Flamethrower.

Perhaps I'm dense (and that's entirely possible), but how do you find out whether an attack is melee, ranged, force, or tech? Some of the abilities are self-explanatory, but others aren't so clear and I haven't seen anything in the ability tooltips about the type of attack that it is, just what kind of damage it does.

Thanks

So with this chart, wouldn't Assassin Tanks be terrible due to their armour rating being so low? and to top THAT off, aren't we the best, due to having high armour AND shields??

So we take the least amount of damage AND we're ranged to pull. Thts totally fair Bioware

Shields don't defend against PVP yellow damage. Assassin tanks get an aggro drop/escape, a pull, and nice single target damage. Shieldtechs get weak single target damage, very nice aoe, a pull AND a charge. An assassin can get more kills, but an ST can still top him on the charts by lieu of spreading that AOE around.
