Daning
That's preference mate and not a question we can help you with unless you provide some insight into how you like to play.

Cheeseblaster
shield spec - pve tank and pvp support tactics - pve/pvp melee dps assault - pve/pvp ranged dps Thanks for that Chomag. Simple starting explanation. For some of us uber-noobs much of the convo that goes on about builds is way over the head. So this is a good list to start from!! EvilMalletto
assault isn't like gunslinger range, it's about 10m, just outside of melee range
MatticusRex
assault isn't like gunslinger range, it's about 10m, just outside of melee range Well, technically more like darting in and out between 10m and 4m, but yeah.

Actually the way you start the fight with assault vs tactics will be totally different Assault starts off dotting up people at +10m before closing in, tactics closes using harpoon or other abilities before starting (ideally) with fire pulse (so that if the enemy is not finished in 15 secs, the next fire pulse will be up) Edited January 3, 2012 by aRtFuL

NomineImperator
Shield Specialist - Tanking in PVE and "Tanking"* in PVP. (Also rocking face 100% of the time, not bias, totally fact ^_-) Heavily favors melee range, with most abilities being melee/10m range. Tactics - a melee-centric high DPS (For a vanguard) build. You will likely not do as much sheer DPS as a DPS class, but your survivability/utility/mobility is often way more than any other DPS class. Assault - A more ranged-centric high DPS (For a vanguard) build. Your bread and butter abilities in this class are ranged, as opposed to tactics which are melee. However, as a vanguard, you are still benefited more by being in your enemy's face than at long range. What to go for? Assault seems to be the more PVE centric DPS, and tactics has more utility for PVP. However, both excel and do very high damage while retaining a Vanguard's natural survivability in both PVE and PVP. Shield Specialist is a tank. You tank things. You melee their faces off and generally just kick so much *** you do not even need DPS, because you are a tank. Again, totally fact, not bias. All three specs are useful, viable and have their perks / downsides. I would say experiment. I was in love with Tactics for the majority of my start as a vanguard. I had a brief stint as assault for PVP when I felt that I may be missing out on ranged damage. Assault was not for me though, and I found that I enjoy Shield Specialist the most as I have excessively high survivability in both PVE and PVP. Definitely experiment, but I would always suggest a Tactics build for beginners. Gut is an excellent ability no matter what type of character you want to play, and looks awesome to boot. Just my 2 creds. *As approximate as tanking can be in PVP. You can shield other players to reduce their taken damage, as well as taunt enemy players to reduce the damage they deal. Think Warhammer Online if you played it. Edited January 3, 2012 by NomineImperator
