Vangaurd DPS ?

Well I think I have settled on wanting to play a vanguard. the playstyle just seems really appealing to me. that being said I dont really want to tank that much, in a pinch I dont mind but not as a role. I get it that I may not put out as much dps as a Commando but can I stay a dps vanguard and do a respectable job? Or if I dont want to tank should I really choose Commando instead? If its viable should I do tactics or assault leveling up? thanks for any advice.

Although I decided to respec as a full tank, certainly up to level 30 I was running as a dps vanguard and was quite happy. Personally i've not found a significant drop in dps since changing to shield spec but the real difference may not kick in till higher levels as now im starting to notice big gains on the tanking side of things.

Yes its completely viable as just dps, and yes you'll be asked to tank on occassion anyway.

Keep a shield in your bag for those occassions.

Spec wise:

Assualt Specialist is the better tree for lvling imo. Id grab the +6% crit from tactics though first thing. You'll also eventually want the +60% armor pen for high impact, but you can wait on that until you get the proc to reset HIgh Impacts cooldown. Also put 1pt in Blaster Augs from Tactics eventually. Other than that you pretty much fill up the Assualt Spec tree as you see fit. There are few bad talents in it except the +3% endurance is worthless.

Tactical Spec is more strictly PvP, as its main focus is mobilty. Or I guess I should say its main strength is mobility.

Assualt Spec is also very viable PvP, and you focus more on reducing the mobilty of your opponents. Very easy to kite melee if played correctly with this spec.

Other than that enjoy. Its in at least the top3 of strongest classes atm.
