  1. You do know that you can group up in those "solo" instances, right? You just have to do them twice. But if you want to play together, you can. The game does not prevent it.

Having to do the content twice is exactly the problem. Doing the same content together but only having it count for one of us is not conducive to a grouped experience, and is the main reason why the new chapters fail so badly for us. They encourage solo play, and that's not what we got into this game for; it was supposed to be something to do together.

Oh well, ESO will let us play grouped and share content, and even has a "marriage" option where our characters get bonus XP for playing together. I guess they want our money more than Bioware does.

  2. and apparently you didn't play the chapters 1-9 where you are fully voiced and fully scripted, and its only the daily/repetitive dialogue that people are complaining about.

Fully voiced means fully voiced, as in everything, all, in total, nothing lacking, etc.. How is this even a question? Voiced for most of the content is not voiced for all of the content, and any part lacking the voice disqualifies the game from the claim of having "full voiceover for all in-game characters". It's an unambiguous statement with zero wiggle-room; it doesn't matter how much voice acting there is, if there is one line without it, the claim "full voiceover" is false. A statement like that is clearly all or nothing, period.

  3. Just putting this out there.

I was perusing the official SWTOR website the other day, and something odd struck me. From the "Key Features" section on the "Game Overview" page:

Choose from one of eight iconic roles and become the hero of your personal Star Wars saga—an interactive storyline with cinematic dialogue and full voiceover for all in-game characters.

Wait, what was that last part again?

full voiceover for all in-game characters

I guess Bioware/EA must have some messed-up legal definition that excludes the player character as qualifying as being "in-game", or else I suppose the above statement could be construed as false advertising.

  4. Thank you Bioware for creating a wonderful story that my wife and I can both enjoy.

And thank you Bioware for designing the gameplay of the new expansion specifically so that my wife and I cannot enjoy the story together by making so much of it solo only. I can't tell you how meaningful that has been for our experience in this game!

    /sarcasm

Seriously though, it has been meaningful. It means that our subs expire tomorrow, and will not be renewed. So thank you Bioware for saving us $30/month.

  5. The movie has been out for a few days already so you should get over it. It is not against the rules to talk about released movies so you can either disable chat or cry about something you have complete control over. ;)

And the whole of Star Wars fandom can pile into the theaters to see it in the space of "a few days", right?

Grow up and learn some consideration for others. BW has already issued warnings against spoilers, requesting that caution be used for at least the first few weeks. If courtesy towards others is not enough motivation to prevent spoilers, then official statements by BW should be sufficient reason. If players can't abide by that, then they deserve whatever repercussions BW sees fit to dish out.

  6. Did Eric mention "never 14 months without an Operation again!"? Yes, he did. But I'm not too bummed out. I think it's a bit...funny. Quite a few PvE players from raid focused guilds are writing they are leaving now. What exactly are you trying to accomplish exactly? Forcing Bioware into stomping out a concept until february? Development takes time. Even constructing the Pitch/Feature development document of an Operation can take longer than a month.

A fair question; but on the flipside, what would they accomplish by remaining and continuing to pay for broken promises? What kind of message does that send to BW and EA?

The fact is that no one is "forcing" Bioware to do anything by unsubbing; they are simply making the decision that in SWTOR, Bioware is no longer offering a product which they feel is worth paying for. That is the right of every consumer in a free-market economy, and if that is the way they truly feel, there is absolutely no reason why they should remain subbed at this time. What Bioware does with the knowledge of these cancelled subscriptions is entirely up to Bioware (and EA).

  7. Had to bring that up again huh. I will give you the short version of all the billions (yes I am exaggerating but there have been many) of threads where this has come by time and again.

    So here it goes:

    Yes, he said that.

Yes, they explained they changed their plans after that.

Now, you can keep trying, but the answer is probably going to be the same. The game went in a different direction than they originally planned and at the time Eric said that, this change of direction hadn't come about yet. It happens.

Sometimes you plan to go out at night with friends and say you'll definitely be there. Then something unexpected came up and you cancel anyway. How long will your friends keep asking why you changed your mind?

So let this one rest if you would. What's more important now that the game has gone in a new direction, when we are finally going to get new group content. I am understanding towards the changes they made and I can see why they did it, but endgame is getting stale quickly as expected and so I am also interested in when we get actual new stuff to do. Not gonna build alliances for 25 characters in the mean time. If BW thought I'd do that, they were wrong in thinking so.

I do like the new story, but I also like being able to ignore it with most of my characters because the replay value isn't that high as it's a single story line, in spite of all the "choices".

So no company should ever be held accountable for promises made to their customers through an official mouthpiece, because "things change"? I'm sorry, but that is wholly unacceptable. Especially in a business model which relies on customers paying in advance for extended periods of time, customers need to know they can rely on the company's forecasts for future content. If the company in question specifically breaks these promises, and customers receive less then they were led to believe they would get in return for their subscriptions paid up front, it becomes a breach of trust (and in some cases, fraud).

To take your analogy further, if you have a friend who on a rare occasion does not show up when they had previously said they would, and then that friend later explains about the emergency or other last-minute issue that prevented them from coming, it is easy to forgive that friend and move on.

However, if you have a friend who frequently and consistently promises they will attend events and yet fails to show up, you will quickly come to realize that this is a friend who is unreliable and cannot be depended upon. You may still invite them to social events, but you probably won't base your plans around them or their schedule, nor would you spend much time waiting for them to show up before moving on to whatever plans await. You almost certainly wouldn't trust them to come through with anything important or vital, unless perhaps you were in the most dire of circumstances and had no one else to rely on.

This is the state we find ourselves in with Bioware today. They have repeatedly issued promises which have been broken. At best, they have changed direction so frequently that you wonder how their employees can find their way into the office each morning. At worst, they have outright lied to us. The bottom line is that whatever they tell us has a good chance of becoming false at some point in time, and no one should be basing any decisions to subscribe based on what BW may have promised as future content. The idea of "subscriber rewards" that require a multi-month continuous subscription are laughable, as in that time BW could have gone through two or three design revisions, and who knows what we would actually be presented with at the end of that time.

Through repeated unfulfilled promises and poor delivery on others, BW has broken trust with their customers. Some still hold out hope, but many have come to the realization that nothing BW claims can be counted on to come to fruition. What each does with that knowledge is of course up to them; personally I'll be taking my money elsewhere in search of companies with more respect for their customers. Others have done likewise, and more may continue to do so. I'm sure there will also be those who choose to stay despite this knowledge. Either way, by no means should further broken promises from BW simply be given a pass just because "things change".

  8. I couldn't care less whether TOR goes canon or not, but need to know the answer to ^^^ too. Come on guys serve up some new books pls.

I doubt that you will ever see anything new (in the SW universe) from Timothy Zahn or any other pre-Disney SW authors. Most authors get attached to their characters, and will want to continue to write about them. Disney has decreed that those characters no longer exist. In order to write about those characters, these authors have to get authorization from Disney. Disney is unlikely to grant authorization for any new "Legends" or otherwise non-canon material, as to do so would have the potential to split their fan base and could detract from Disney's other SW endeavors. The smart move for Disney (from a business perspective) would be to only allow SW works that support their other projects and products. So the only way we are likely to get any new SW material from any of our favorite EU authors would be if they agree to completely eschew their previous creations in favor of working within Disney's new sandbox.

  9. I'll give Eric the benefit of the doubt and say he had every intention of replying to this thread initially, but from where it has progressed - no dev will touch this with a 10 foot pole. More likely, they may find a few things in here they are willing to reply to and make new threads on those topics.

I'm afraid that intending to reply "unless it gets ugly" is not the same as "having every intention of replying". Unfortunately, the former has been standard procedure for Eric (and other BW reps); they will promise a reply, but if the response is too negative, we will never hear from them (on that topic) again. Considering the significant negative response to the majority of changes over the past several months, there have been very few promises of replies that have been fulfilled. It has been pretty well established by now that a negative community reaction means that all replies are off (for that matter, some neutral or even favorable responses have not received promised follow-up or replies), so I think you are being a bit to generous towards Mr. Musco and his supposed intentions. I am fully willing to believe that he knew he would not reply if the community response wasn't right, as that has been the repeated BW behavior over and over.

  10. I think actions speak out more then words. I cancel out my sub, and now re-sub with WoW. Good luck BW

I've got a pile of games from GOG.com I've been meaning to get to (even more now that their winter sale is on), plus some old favorites on the shelf I've been thinking of revisiting. For that matter, I've been wanting to catch up on my reading. I'm actually looking forward to when my subscription expires, there's so much to do!

How is that for an endorsement? "KotFE, the expansion that inspired players to read more books!"

  11. Cool, thanks! Some nifty stuff indeed. :D

    Opinions will vary.

    1. More strongholds for cheap? Not bad I suppose, assuming you like decorating multiple strongholds. Of course, if you already have these strongholds, it's not much of a reward, is it? This one seems geared towards newer players who have joined since the implementation of strongholds, rather than those who have been around long enough to celebrate multiple anniversaries. Anyone who was around when strongholds first came out (and who was actually interested in strongholds) probably picked these up cheap during the initial offer.

    2. Ebon Hawk decoration? Meh. (see assumption on #1)

    3. Ebon Hawk resting animation? Frankly, it looks ridiculous. I can just imagine a big bad Sith or a stoic Jedi Master busting out a kids toy and flying it around in between life and death fights.

So for a player who has been around for a while and isn't particularly interested in the whole "interior decorator" aspect of the game, these rewards don't really offer much worth mentioning.

  12. I hope not. I'm so glad Disney eradicated the useless fanmade nonsense AKA the EU. Good riddance!

I was not aware that "professional author written" and "George Lucas approved" constituted "fanmade". You may not have liked the EU, even I didn't care for several of the entries, but in no way can it legitimately be referred to as "fanmade".

And even if you have such a low opinion of the EU, what on Earth makes you think that Disney will do any better?

  13. I wonder, why make statements like this if you don't plan on following up on them?

Apparently that is standard operating procedure around here. I have yet to se any BW representative actually follow up on something with real or meaningful responses to the community after having promised to do so; at least not on anything that received any significant level of an unfavorable response.

  14. I for one do NOT want anyone to look at Bib Fortuna for any inspiration. It's annoying enough that 99% of alien races in pop culture fictiom have sex-symbol hot females and ugly males simply because straight guys responsible for their designs can't phantom the perception of anyone other than themselves. Thankfully male Twileks in TOR look normal. Male Togrutas on the other hand already suffer from terrible Clone Wars/Rebels designs where once again females are perfect sex fantasies and males are butt ugly.

Um, I was only referencing the character from the standpoint of anatomy regarding the ears; not suggesting his overall appearance as a desirable template.

Twi'lek's have human-like ears; all Twi'leks, male and female. Just because one female Twi'lek once wore a decorative headband that covered hers is no reason to force a deformity on all Twi'lek women.

  15. I'd just like it if they actually gave Twi'lek females their ears back. In designing some game or piece of art years ago, some idiot mistook the gold cones on the sides of Oola's headband in RotJ for her ears, and somehow that mistake has been repeated in every depiction of Twi'lek females since then. And instead of looking at Bib Fortuna's very human ears and realizing that something was wrong, the conclusion was that male Twi'leks have ears, but females have weird cancerous-looking protrusions. All because no one wanted to admit the mistake.
  16. [When they first announced what they were doing with canon... THAT was NOT CANON at first.. then they changed there mind...

I'm not exactly certain I understand what you are saying here correctly, but if I follow correctly, are you suggesting that previous EU material (books/games/etc.) was not canon until after it came out?

If that's the case, then I have to disagree. As I understand it, in the days of Lucas, all Star Wars material had to be approved as canon before it was published. This certainly was true for the novels; I believe it also held for at least some of the works in other media such as comic books and video games as well.

Well everything that has come out since disney bought star wars in swtor.. has been approved and re written by them if they felt so... i never thought i would say this.. but i think star wars is in good hands with disney...

I don't really consider wiping out nearly all of the existing canon stories and characters as having the setting "in good hands". It sets a precedent that canon or not, nothing is permanent, and nothing is safe; what is canon one day could be discarded the next, if that's what brings in short-term profits. With this single act, Disney has made it clear that they are not interested in building a lasting fictional universe; they have no respect for the past or vision for the future, but instead are only interested in the now. With this approach, it will only be a matter of time before Disney films "Star Wars: A New Hope - the remake", and starts all over again.

And please, for the sake of everyone's eyes, knock it off with the oversized text.

Question for anyone in particular: Why are folks so interested in things being/not being canon to the Star Wars story?

I really don't get it. It's all fiction. Jaina and Jacen Solo are no longer canon and we probably won't ever see them in a movie, but who cares? Some of the stories that include them were great reads. Same with Mara Jade, Cade Skywalker, Kyle Katarn and the rest.

What does having the arbitrary distinction of being "canon" do?

Others have already answered this, but I'll throw in my 0.02 credits. Having established canon provides for continuity, and allows for stories and characters to be built upon and to grow. Being able to do these things allow the opportunity for a simple story to grow into an epic saga. If there is no canon, then stories will contradict each other, and it makes it difficult to improve and grow the tale because there is no longer a common frame of reference for the audience. With an established canon, creators can expect the audience to have a common knowledge of certain events, and that provides a foundation to build upon. And for individuals who come into a story partway and don't have the knowledge of previous events, having established canon makes it easy for them to catch up (as opposed to having to hunt through several different sources and trying to determine which stories the book they are reading uses and which it ignores, and then having to repeat the process every time they pick up a new book). Without canon, there is confusion and discord.

  17. They could have just made an old looking character to begin with? I don't think they meant they think 30 year has passed. ;P

The problem with making old-looking characters is that the game never seems to treat the player characters as old. I've always found it odd that in the wide range of appearance options, BW gave us the possibility to make characters of a wide range of ages, but then scripted all the stories for relatively younger PCs. I remember when I made my first trooper, I designed him as a gray-haired "grizzled veteran", intending to play that sort of character - and in the first 10 minutes I must have been called "kid" nearly a dozen times. It was so jarringly out of place that I had to remake the character, not changing his appearance, but rather his name, so that "kid" sounded almost like a plausible nickname. I almost think it would have been better if BW had only given us character options that fit the age of the story (maybe with optional aging as the game went on). I enjoy the freedom of open character creation, but a game shouldn't let me make a character for a specific story that has no way of actually fitting in to that story.

I need to go back and do the trooper questline, its one I've skipped. It was obviously written by someone without military experience, or seemed to be to me at the time. Officers saluting first to an enlisted, calling women "Sir" and other silly stuff that annoy me more than it should...and general lack of gravity.

But then I avoid every single game made like CoD and all those, I pick em apart and it ruins immersion.

Totally agree on the lack of anything resembling proper military etiquette, ranking, etc. Star Trek also did the calling women "sir" thing as some sort of equality statement (really it just came off as silly though), and I'm guessing that's where SWTOR picked it up from.

  18. Have you played a new character? The companion stories are still there, the 2nd chat happened around influence 15/16 with Kalyilo as I made a 2nd sniper to see what they did.

I said "no more", with "more" as in "additional". I suppose I could have phrased that better. My point being that while the expansion opens up a wide range of companions, it gives those companions little to no actual content, wich only further contributes to the lack of differentiation between companions.

  19. How about this, I ran into no bugs, glitches during early access of FM, where I needed to instance hop to get meat tree to work and needed a guildies help to beat Revan.

And I wasn't the only one with those issues which got fixed the following week.

So, yes, FM was smooth as silk compared to SoR. The only issue I have or had was the nerf hammer on the companions, which they fixed the following week.

There are still bugs to this day which have been completely unaddressed which are keeping many players from even trying the KotFE content for fear of being hit by these bugs:

    http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=856254

So no, not everyone had a "smooth" experience, and not all bugs were quickly fixed.

  20. If that were actually true it would be meaningful, except it wasn't. The "best" companion was always Treek (tank or healer, very good at both) or HK-51 (excellent DPS, bar none). All other companions were decidedly second rate by comparison. Even for those who lacked Treek or HK there was one companion they pretty much had to use or function effectively at a disadvantage for not using.

That's a common misconception, but being common doesn't make it true. Treek's strength was in her versatility, making it only necessary to gear a single companion to fill multiple roles, but not everyone wanted to pay for that (or could stand an annoying Ewok for a companion). When companions were properly geared, HK-51's DPS was arguably on a par with other DPS companions.

As for being stuck with one specific companion for each class, I find that it varied depending on what role my character was playing, what enemies I was facing, and what was the rest of the composition of my group (I typically played paired with a friend). Most of my characters had 2 or 3 companions they would switch between regularly; sometimes for a comp of a different role, and sometimes just to develop another comp's story.

Now, all the companions are effectively the same, so outside of crafting there is no need to develop more than one companion. There are no more companion stories, especially for any new or "exclusive" companions, so there's not even that going for them.
