edit 2 - By the way, TSW is having it's one month anniversary this weekend - you can try it for free and come to your own conclusions about it rather than blindly following a you-tube review of it.

I know another well-known MMO that did that not so long ago, look where they are now....

P.S. I tried it in beta, didn't enjoy it.

OT: I've unsubbed because I made the mistake of believing that LotRO going F2P wouldn't degrade my game experience. I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.

  2. They do steal them if you are fighting a group of linked mobs and you haven't done damage to one or more of them yet. You might argue that they aren't mine if I haven't damaged them yet, but if they are linked and I have them crowd controlled or they are attacking and damaging me and/or my companion, then I do consider them to be my claim. In any case, it's rude and uncalled for for someone to interfere with what I'm doing and potentially putting me in danger by breaking my stuns. I do not get credit for my quests when others roll through and kill my linked mobs. (Note that I'm not talking about any of the other mobs in the same area that aren't linked together. Those are fair game to anyone.) It has happened time and time again to the point where I try to wait until anyone visible to me has left the area or are preoccupied with something else before I start my fights. So no, I'm not going to buff or thank someone who comes through and robs me of my time because they can't seem to find their own mobs to kill, even if there are hundreds of mobs available other than mine. It's a huge pet peeve for me. Thank goodness for the instanced areas where I can handle my own fights in peace!

    Amen!

OT - I will often be unbuffed because I hadn't noticed they had dropped off and frankly, levelling is largely a face-roll in this game anyway.

  3. Well let's hope none of the people trying raiding for the first time ever come here and see how they are being described - as "idiots", "morons" etc. Otherwise, rather than learning from their experiences and striving to become better at it (thus adding to the available pool of good raiders), they'll probably just give up on the idea and go back to playing alts.

What people should realise is that this situation was inevitable. Many of the people entering OPs/FPs through LFG will be doing so for the first time - for a lot of them this will even be their first MMO - such is the attraction of the IP. Some will have come from quiet servers where they couldn't get a group together even if they tried. Because of this I'd imagine many of them think that this kind of content is just the same as they have already played, just BIGGER, which is why (in their minds) it requires more people.

I'm sure things will settle down and improve - provided those with experience have the understanding and patience to help those who want to learn, to get through their first couple of runs without rage-quitting on them mid-run.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are plenty out there who not only don't have a clue what to do, but don't care either, for them there is no help.

  4. Patch 2.9

    Legacy Upgrade:

You asked for it so here it is! Want a fully Rakata geared level 70 toon? Pay 100mil credits and click that button...

*** is this? The game has been out for less than a year and you are already falling into the 'have it all faster, bigger, NOW!' mentality that has screwed up Lotro - and you don't even have PtW yet. If the next patch is as asinine as this one I'll be the last of my original guild to say 'bye-bye'.

This game is going to end up being as challenging as Farmville at this rate.

  5. This is a great thread. Thanks.

I kind of understand why BW doesn't do this, but i just wish they e-mailed us notifications of changes a week or even a few days in advance.

I found out when 1.2 was coming out the day of.

You need to stay in more :)

  6. What servers do SWTOR use?

Do they run them on Linux or something else?

Or is it a company secret?

Just curious...I don't really know anything about PC's so I'm just interested in learning mmo's or "behind the scenes" kind of thing lol ^_^

    Welome to the internet...I guess...

  7. I agree that it doesn't make any sense. Imagine if Leia had shown up in a Hutt palace wearing a bounty hunter uniform or Luke Skywalker appeared on an imperial facility in a stormtrooper uniform. Ridiculous, I say!

    Oh...wait...

Exactly. This could go too far, imagine if they introduce weapons that are made of light, or skills that appear to defy the laws of physics; its just the thin end of the wedge - oh wait it can't be, he hasn't been born yet.

  8. "Gearscore" and the "geargate" have absolutely NOTHING to do with how available gear to overcome said gate is to acquire.

The gear itself "proves" nothing and is just the developer chosen in game mechanic to move progression along.

Some of you are desperately looking for something or someone to vilify here.

When did a discussion about 'gearscoring' become one about 'geargating'.

Geargating is a barrier to content created by devs, gearscoring is a barrier to content created by players.

Edit: I'll concede your point about having completely green gear and going in over your head, but we all know that

isn't the sole example of exclusion that 'gearscoring' leads to.

Edit 2: In hindsight, maybe I should have said 'Substandard' rather that 'Poor' in relation to gear in my original post...

  9.

The excuses about why a "good" player doesnt have proper gear dont fly either. Gear is so easy to come by in this game its almost laughable.

Then why the need for a gear-score? If a horse's backside can gear itself up, what does gear prove?

I see what you did there.

It's called 'Painting yourself into a corner' btw.

  10. Good player in poor gear > Poor player in Good gear.

But how does a Poor player get Good gear I hear you ask?

By getting lucky and being carried by the Good players, happens all the time.

So how does the Good player only have Poor gear?

Could be their first time, they have a job , or they've been unlucky and had more than their fair share of Poor players.

    tl;dr

Gear means FA and you can't score for ability.

Who knows, you may even PUG an absolute diamond healer who is just starting out, invite them to your guild, gear them up and end up with the best damn healer on your server....or you could kick them for having sub-standard gear. ;)

  11. It's not like those features are brand new anymore. Some of them have been around a long time now. Many of them are convenience type feature but not all. For example, a working, well designed and executed auction house is a major component of most MMOs. There is no reason that shouldn't be a priority during development. Even if something major enters the market midway in development it can be implemented in many (not all) cases. Games aren't developed in a vacuum, the plan may change many times during the development period. That is part of why it takes so long. They have been working on this game for years now and had a large budget to go with it. The current product does not reflect that.

'Those features' being what exactly? The LFG tool that Lotro introduced after 4 1/2 years? The cosmetic tab after (I don't recall exactly but I'm guessing 2 years?). Yes the Auction House is a major omission from SWT|OR, but then I'm going to say that story-driven voice-acted quest-chains are now a major omission from every other MMO in the market. Which would you rather have? Personally, I'm going with the awesome quest experience; there's always Ebay for the Auction House fix.

  12. Sorry dude, but you are wrong on that aspect. This is not a new trend with consumers, this has ALWAYS been the way of buisness. Unless you offer a product that is at least equal to or better than your competition your product isn't going to be a success (unless you sell it at bargain prices/f2p in MMO terms).

Three words/acronyms - Marketing VHS BETA....

Meme attack - your argument is invalid.

In case you are too young to understand my point....Betamax was a superior videotape format in terms of image quality (which is why it was adopted by TV broadcasters) but VHS was marketed more successfully, so the majority of people bought a VHS compatible VCR, most of them never even knowing that they were buying into an inferior technolgy.

  13. Sergiopitanga has just beaten me to one of these but anyhow; I suggest you do 2 things (specifically referencing Lotro)

    1. Remove your rose-tinted spectacles

    2. Go here and see how many bug-fixes / tweaks you can find in the first few months entries. (I don't think you'll find those monthly content additions you remember btw).

I too am an ex-Lotro player and subscriber, from pre-release until October last year, when the focus on the store (a legacy of WB's takeover of Turbine) became too much for me to bear. I miss a feature or two that Lotro has for sure - the cosmetic tab being the primary one (customisable UI used to hold that position until 1.2).

But you have to realise that SWTOR has been in development for a long time, and many of the features we take for granted in MMOs were not part of the landscape when the ground plan for this game was laid out. That being said, Bioware have had plenty of opportunity to see MMOs developing while they created the game - and that is why things like the customisable UI have been added. These things are not knocked-up over a weekend, they take months to develop and integrate into a game, and I am confident that similar features which are now considered standard MMO fare will continue to be delivered over the next few months.

Of course if development appears to have stagnated in a couple of months time, then I shall be questioning whether I want SWTOR to be the recipient of my monthly MMO sub fee. But for the time being I am happy with what I am seeing.

P.S. I think that anyone who expects a new to market MMO to incorporate all the current FotM features in current MMOs - plus a twist - is setting themselves up for a lifetime of disappointment.
