  1. thats not planning for it, thats just shutting down and giving up on trying to have consistent service. they easily could have pulled some resouces from their big projects that have no real release date announced and had them put something together in less time so they could keep promises they already made. But, they know enough fanboys and apologists exist that they can really just blow anything off with any sort of excuse and have people willingly accept it.

    Troll?

Or just doesn't have a job...

  2. I keep saying it over and over, so I'll try to make this the last time.

I'm not saying character names are or should be important to everyone. I'm saying that there are many people for whom their characters' names IS an issue, and there are doubtless many reasons why they feel this way.

The concern I have is that this is an issue that is going to end up harming the game, which is struggling to survive. If you're going to come here and tell me the game is fine and dandy, you're deluding yourself. They cannot afford to lose any customers to something like this.

The fact is that it IS already costing them customers. There are at least two people in THIS THREAD who have indicated that their continued subscription depends upon a satisfactory solution to this problem (yes, I am one of them). There are others in other threads who have said the same. That makes it serious. That makes it a concern for Bioware to address. It's not because character names are important that they need to do so, it's because customer satisfaction is important. They need to deal with it because it's important to us, whatever they may think of it themselves.

The solution has been presented here and elsewhere. There are free to play games (STO & CHampions Online, for example) that they can go check out if they want to see it in action. It's not likely something completely trivial to implement, but I think it's needed. They need to put the solution into effect as soon as they can, not because the game is going to be destroyed now, but because this is only going to get worse if they delay. It's going to harm their bottom line, it's going to harm the game's longevity, it's going to harm the game's community and it's going to harm their reputation.

People seem to get all that, they are just pointing out on a scale of 1-10 for changes needed in this game, a character name overhaul is like a 3 at best. The risks for the rewards is also pretty lacking if BW screws it up in the long run.

  3. I take it that the lvl 40 requirement is still in place. In which case, it's use would be that you can purchase the speeder training with real money instead of spending credits on it.

I forgot how much rank 2 pilot training costs but if its above 140K credits then you still made a good deal off it. If it's cheaper then you just got ripped off.

  4. The only complaint I have about that system is this:

Bill is a different name than Bîll, which is a different name than Bíll, which is a different name than Bïll. Trust me, if your name was Joe, and someone spelled it Jo, you'd be pretty upset too, because one is a man's name and one is a woman's name - all because of one letter. Then, you have some names like André, which is completely different when you have Andrée, as again, one is a male name, one is a female name.

I get what you're saying about it being a workaround, though, and for most people, that's probably good enough. If you're on an RP server, or if you do any amount of role-playing where names important to you and your characters, then it's an issue. One that, unfortunately, someone has to get the short end of the stick on - whether it's me and my character named Deathshrike who has been Deathshrike since launch day who had to get changed to Deadly-shrike, or the other guy who may have had Deathshrike for some unknown-to-me period of time and managed to "keep it" when my server merged with his. One of us would get the name, one of us wouldn't. I called Heads, it came up Tails.

I may just be immune to the finer details of what makes a name thanks in due part to a web series that hi-jacked it from me while I was asleep... Nothing like waking up one morning to people sending you whispers asking if your some girl from a show you've never heard of before (:rak_02:).

I've always just gone by the philosophy that a name is what you make it, not the other way around. My name could be fluffies and I could still be known as "The Destroyer of Worlds" if that's how I choose to represent that name.

  5. Lets see, character names that I use:

    Codex

    Cödex

    Côdex

    Còdex

    Codêx

    Codëx

    Codèx

    Côdêx

    Côdëx

    .

    .

    Codek

    Cödek

    .

    .

    Kodex

    etc...

108 different variations (near a thousand if I throw in some ' into the mix), and all based off one name!

Is it really that hard to beat the system?

  6. I'm also fine with waiting, but I need to know they're planning it.

Now begs the question of would you believe them if they said it was on there to-do list? (I think they mentioned it at some point but I have no links to back it up, sorry)

    Right up there with:

    -Same gender marriage

    -Space combat overhaul

    -Open world PvP overhaul

    -Class story expansions

Priority wise, I'm not even sure where it would fit in considering the easy work around to the problem right now is to be creative with new name.

Frustrating as it is, and with the loss of users over it, It's hard to actually create a strong argument for BW to put a focus on this issue overall. At least compared to other problems at hand.

  7. Keep in mind, the legacy change took 2-months for them to implement which is why server merges took so long to release to begin with (they had it in beta but it broke with the creation of the legacy). It also only effected the legacy tree, which did have bugs after transfers.

The name change would effect character data, instance ownership, item creations, account data, and cartel coins. If any of these goes wrong, the outcry would be far more extreme then the name change issue.

Let them get it right rather then force it out and screw something up...

  8. Force players to choose a nametag like Legacy. Then give all chars a free rename, while having char names be non-unique. The new way to address people in whispers or mail would then be nametag@charname. It is trivial.

What you see as trivial, I see as a complete overhaul of the framework of the engine. Also a high potential for something to break in a significant way (loss of character data maybe?). Doesn't really sound like something that should be rushed into a release to save a few thousand un-creative users from leaving.

  9. The engine itself has a major problem with name plates. Sadly, the better the computer, the more it attempts to render these and chokes the processor. Also, I believe this game only runs as a 32-bit engine so it never really uses the full potential (or even close to that) of the processor.

Server lag is server lag, not much will change there.

UI changes also has the same problem of being a 32-bit engine and causing slight delays. Usually noticeable if you spam either your inventory or guild window many times.

If your sitting in an isolated area and still getting frame rate and delay problems then there might be something more to this that I am not aware of.

  10. Your doubt is unfounded. We've seen two people at least in this forum alone who have indicated this is an issue that will drive them from the game. I am one myself. I left the game only a little while ago to attend to personal matters (real life does intrude on gaming), with every intention of returning when I was able to. Now, because of this an only this, I won't be coming back.

    Unless they fix it.

People come to the forums to complain, seeing two cases is hardly surprising...

Anyways, I had many characters and have never stopped my subscription and from what I saw during all the server merges, the characters I played the most retained there names. Those I played the least lost there names to players (that I would imagine) put more game time into there characters. If this is not a "fair" way of deciding who gets what name then you are just desperate for obtaining solely what you want out of life.

  11. The thing is, it IS your problem after a fashion. People quit the game over this (we've seen as much already in this thread), which erodes the game's playerbase, which erodes the game's income, which means the game dies off.

Bioware needs to keep ALL the players here. They can't say, "we don't need those people." The game, and by extension, YOU, can't afford it.

I highly doubt anyone who quits over the lose of a name (especially when the loss of the name was the cost of improving general populations across the active servers, the #1 complaint at the time) left solely based on the name change. More then likely they left because they didn't enjoy the game in itself as well.

It's not a matter of "we don't need those people" but a matter of "we don't need people who don't care for this game". Complaining about name change (that was the by-product of improving the game) is not something I would consider "helpful" towards making this game better.

  12. If it's a rank 2 speeder, then it does give a bit more protection (2 hits instead of 1). It's hardly noticeable in the long run since higher level mobs will still knock you off quickly.

If it's rank 3 speeder, you will notice a difference, but 3 mobs attacking you at the same time can still knock you off.

If it's the armored tank vehicle from the Nightmare EC operation, then I have no idea if it's actually improved or not but I'm hoping it to be a god send for never getting knocked off.

  13. On ToFN there is already the unlock on the GTN for 500k credits only, if you don't want to spend any more real money on the game.

lol, they are capped at 200k/350k credits for F2P/Preffered status. Who ever put that up is midly idiotic...

  14. see when you make your free to play so unplayable it doesnt make you wana go "HMM i better pay for it" you will just get pissed off and go to a much better game, which any game would be better at this point. good for you if you like SWTOR but it is now a minority to like swtor now, alot of people have been screwed over by bioware/EA with this. they closed down a better star wars MMO, star wars galaxies, sure it didnt have the graphic's swtor does but in the long run it means nothing, a game that was made back in 2003ish was about to trump a game that came out in 2012? pathetic, star wars galaxies lasted 8 years never went free to play. look at most of the games that go free to play, dead or gone, DCU is about to close, city of hero's did close, and countless others are dead due to f2p. it doesnt bring paying subscribers it brings free loader's and limiting the free to play doesnt make them wana pay to play, they go to a different game, it's good if you like swtor not telling you "YOU must hate this NOW" my problem is with fan boy's who are not mature to hear someone downing their game.

    -Bashes fanboys

    -Praises a failed MMO (galaxies)

    ....what?

  15. The horse is already out of the barn at this point. This was the time to make the most impact and they screwed it up. Even if they do change it now its really too late to really affect the incoming f2p crowd.

Well at any rate here is what i would of done.

I think give 4 hotbars and the 2 extra you can buy. Story wise i would have it where you have to buy each chapter beyond the first one. Then you can either buy the next 2 as a pack or seperately. The flashpoints would be sold seperately but in packs according to where in the chapters they fall. I would then sell ops seperately. For the pvp warzones i would offer a weekly, monthly, 3 month pack for those with price going slightly down. Then the normal boost and comsetic stuff they already have.

I would also get rid of the random box stuff as well but people actually spend more money that way and people dont have the discipline not to spend alot on those.

My overall point being is game features should not be bought, the content and cosmetic gear and convenience are what should be bought by f2p players

You line between "game features" and "content/conveniences" is incredibly unclear and most likely highly debatable.
