  1. This game lost class identity in the story lines 1 year and almost 4 months after release when Rise of the Hutt Cartel came out. Aside from the single class quest we received when Rishi came out. After that everything was a narrated path for us to follow. The "Alliance" came on the scene years after that.

A long-lasting problem ignored is still a problem worth calling out on. As soon as I'm finished with all class stories, I'm leaving this game until this problem is fixed. I have better things to do than repeat a single storyline multiple times... like catching up with the latest ep of Loki, just recently released today!

Anyway, that part of the lost identity is also why I've skipped every expansion on my alts as soon as I finished Chapter 3. Makeb, Illum, etc. All skipped. I didn't even finish Onslaught to see the Pub side of the story since it forced me to go through Echoes of Oblivion and that stupid Mandalorian tie-in FP. Hell, I didn't even bother with the events either since they have nothing to do with my class identity. Didn't have the mood to do them. Just powering through these class stories until I can get this **** over with.

  2. Wellll ... there's also the "alliance" that's still around (3rd faction of a sort). Granted some would like to get rid of it ... but some of us are still enjoying that independent state (even if we did have to choose sides: Republic or Sith Empire.

But you are also right: pretty much a LS or DS support the Republic or the Empire (choices being made). Very little difference in the story whether JK / Smuggler or Trooper.

I'm kind of hoping that this will expand a bit! AND (hopefully) before I really DO get old(er).

The problem with the "Alliance" isn't so much that I didn't enjoy the independent state of it, but how it kinda coalesces all classes into a single entity devoid of identity and individuality. All your choices as Alliance are the same regardless of your class. All your stories were the same during KotFE/KotET, regardless of your class, save a few insignificant companion reunions. The Alliance stripped the classes of their unique identity. THAT is why some of us wanted it gone.

It's a VERY different story if this is a single player RPG like Mass Effect where your choice of class doesn't make a difference to begin with (no class stories, no unique companions and character journeys), and you only get to play ONE game, not eight, then we'd have no complaints since there's no loss of potential.

Also, it's a very different scenario if your role as the Alliance Commander differs depending on which class you play - it doesn't. Playing a bada** and ruthless BH craving only credits and violence then suddenly becoming this heroic Alliance Commander was the most ridiculous thing I had the misfortune to experience. Thankfully, I skipped Kotxx altogether on my BH.

You could already experience this lack of individuality as early on as the Taral V (and possibly the Foundry) FP, where non-force users still got to experience "the force" through the help of Master Oteg. Your role as a Trooper is referenced briefly by the moff, but it doesn't make a lick of difference in the big picture. Though understandable why that's the case in a flashpoint, it's an early warning sign of things to come.

Now, I'm a reasonable man, and I can understand that handling eight different class stories is a huge undertaking that Bioware no longer has the finance or manpower to handle. But if I could be honest, I'd much rather pay for a much shorter game with more unique individuality than stick around for the long haul and be bored with a single story. That unique variety of class stories is why I came to the game in the first game, and it shall be the only factor determining whether if I continue support Bioware financially with my subs (and cartel coin purchases).

Furthermore, it doesn't even have to be some big game-changing aspect like more class stories, but perhaps something smaller like having Theran/Zenith to fight by your side if you're a JC, or having Jaesa be more involved in Jedi Under Siege, just small little strokes like that to remind players that, "Hey, we have a little reward for those who play XX Class." That would be enough to make my day. Theran did get to play a role in the Meridian FP, but pretty much every class would still get to meet him anyway - there's very little unique variation save for one or two lines of "Hey JC, it's me again!" I would've preferred something like meeting an old companion again unique to each class during the FP and then having him/her fighting by your side, or if you've already met the companion through an Alliance alert, he/she will get to play a unique role during the FP. Something like that. Again, I know how FPs work, so it doesn't even have to occur during a FP, but perhaps during a normal story quest or something.

I hate that almost every NPC refers to you as "Alliance Commander" now instead of your unique class. I'm playing Trooper now, and I can't tell you how much fun I have playing generic planetary quests because the NPC would address you as "Wow, it's an honor to meet the Captain of the Havoc Squad." That kind of unique feeling to remind you of your role, of what you choose to roleplay as, it's minor but it makes so much difference.

Also, just an observation, but I've got a feeling Bioware put more effort into the Trooper's interactions with the NPCs, because these planetary quest dialogues feel more unique than when I played the other classes. There's more emphasis on acknowledging that you're a soldier of the Republic, part of the proud men and women serving the army. There's more military jargon involved. There's more saluting in the cutscenes that you wouldn't have gotten if you played a Jedi. Just these little details made all the difference and makes you want to go, "HOOAH! HAVOC SQUAD!" Damn right, makes you damn proud to serve the army. lol

  3. I just care about more story and companion interactions. I hope that with the "back to basics" direction of Onslaught, we could someday get back to class stories and/or companion missions. That's my bigger wish list item for 7.0.

Saboteur options need to expand beyond superficial dialogue choices. I hope we get to see real changes to your character's journey.

Romantic interest you gained on Ossus needs to have a bigger payoff than some two minute kiss cutscene, so hopefully, down the line, your Ossus RI could get to play a bigger role (also, c'mon, Jaesa was an obvious choice to get involved in Jedi Under Siege, much like Nadia).

Since I feel like we're reaching some kind of resolution to the current arc pretty soon (though most probably not the end of the game itself), hopefully, there'll be some major emotional payoffs in the likes of ME3. Say what you will about the ending of ME3, but it had some of the best emotional payoffs in the trilogy, especially with Mordin and curing the Genophage and the war between Quarians and Geths. The Emperor returning for the umpteeth time in Echoes of Oblivion was an embarrassing joke, not a payoff.

And just to reiterate: more focus on your character's solo journey. Trace it back to each class' class story, reference it in some way. Enough of this Alliance Commander crap. Go back to our class' origins. Go back to making it feel unique to play each class in terms of storytelling, having our own individuality as Trooper/Smuggler/Sith Warrior, etc, not having us all meshed together into a single storyline for all classes.

Go back to what you do best, Bioware: emotional storytelling. I'm more than willing to pay for monthly subs since I'm always willing to reward good storytelling and passionate storytellers. I'm not willing, however, to pay for gaming corporations slapping together a fast product just for to get something mediocre and functional out.

  4. Even the old combat styles never made much sense, or rather, they were never put to good use in your class story anyway. Being a Gunnery Commando with a huge-*** Assault Cannon would still have your Trooper pulling out a pathetic pistol in the cutscene instead of the BFG. Therefore, I don't see why it would matter if my Trooper uses a Lightsaber or anything that doesn't suit his class - the class story/cutscenes never bothered to associate your combat style with your character anyway.
  5. Well, my Zabrak grew up a slave, so the Empire's ways of slavery and oppression is an obvious reason why she would defect. It didn't start out that way of course, and she allowed that upbringing to shape her in the Sithy hateful ways, but Jaesa turned that around.

I think that this game has a good system in place that allows for experimentations of headcanon beyond what's acceptable in the "lore" and "canon," which is why I play it in the first place, the roleplay.

  6. Seriously?? READ. THE. DATES. This thread was going on a year & a half old. Let them stay dead.

How 'bout no? If someone has something productive to contribute, or even an opinion to offer, I don't see why their voices should be suppressed to keep threads dead.

Anyway, I don't see why people just love to hate things, be it the Jedi Consular or the LS Trooper. The idea that playing a LS Trooper being boring, I can see why that is, but at the same time, it's also kinda a shame people feel that way, the idea that you get to play this gung-ho loyalist Republic soldier (shouting "FOR THE REPUBLIC!" all the time), willing to put down your lives to help the helpless, that kind of admirable position is something endearing to roleplay with (also see my opinion on the JC for a similar comparison on martyr roles like the LS JC and Trooper).

I can't tell you how many times I felt that the LS Trooper, especially the female one with Jennifer Hale's voice, sounded like a gosh darn hero I would worship, a real Captain America. That's pretty much it though - I roleplayed it with the idea in mind that my Trooper is some kind of Captain America-ish girl-scout willing to put down her life for the sake of others. That made my experience more fun.

Shame others just couldn't see it. Shame others couldn't experience my joy of wanting to go in and go "Hooah!" on the Imps. WHAT TEAM? HAVOC SQUAD! HOOAH!

  7. Gotta say, with all the hate towards him (and I was one of them), his companion missions and dialogue are far tamer than I would've thought. Conversations about his lust for killing, his time for prison, etc. Nothing too gross or appalling. Not what I expected when I heard about the hate.

The only annoying thing that really stands out is his constant remark of "Wimp" and especially "Aww, gonna call your mommy?" during summon. SUMMON, not just healing. lol

  8. Just a heads up in case anyone plans to buy this mount; it's currently bugged. Whenever I activate the mount, be it from my quickbar or from my abilities menu, the right wing won't extend and remains retracted. Using the mount flourish key binding to retract the left wing and then using it again to extend both wings fixes this, but the problem returns whenever you activate the mount.

I've already submitted a bug report in the game. Here's hoping they'll fix it fast.

  9. Only played up to BH so far, but I'll offer my input:

SW: Female Zabrak, DS > LS (after Oasis mission) [Republic Saboteur]

This one hasn't changed much since the first time I played it several years ago (with the exception of the saboteur role added in). I still find this set to be the most appealing for me because she's this bada** female warrior breaking the chain from both the Empire and her Sith masters. Zabraks, particularly the red-skinned kind, are also known to be tribalistic and violent warriors (though probably not as violent in their culture as Rattataki), so her redemption arc over to the LS feels the most satisfying so far.

    JC: Female Miraluka, LS

If I had the chance to replay my JC, I would play her as a LS martyr instead of being a DS one. JC is most ideal as a LS diplomat willing to lend her wisdom and strength for the good of the galaxy. And a blind seer like a Miraluka is even more fitting.

Mirialan is also a good choice too for obvious reasons. The SWtoR wiki itself even describes them as perfect JCs, being the wisest in the galaxy.

    BH: Female Togruta, LS

Speaks for itself if you know the bare minimum about Togruta as a species; their culture is that of hunters taking down large beasts. Plus, Togruta is perfect for an honorable Mandalorian BH. I'm currently playing a DS Rattataki BH however just for the fun of it; ideally, it would be a LS Togruta for me.

    Trooper: Female Human, LS

Jennifer Hale is the main reason for doing this. It's like Femshep all over again. Also, a class as generic as a Trooper, I just can't see other alien races spicing it up, so it should be left to a generic race like human.

    JK: Female Cathar, LS

The fierce lionness heroine to the rescue. Cathars as a cat-species is pretty fitting for the heroic class of JKs. Kinda like how the motif for the courageous Gryffindors is a lion.

Haven't really figured out the other classes yet. Will update as I finish the other class stories.

  10. It's pretty easy to see actually where all the hatred for the character comes from the moment you lay eyes on him: beating up a woman and threatening to do "worse." lol This guy's so edgy he makes Sith Lords look like Beverly Cleary. My BH's a dark side scumbag who loves to kill for the thrill of violence, and even he's pretty put off by him, not to mention having lost all respect when he threw a tantrum at the shield Zale Barrows put up.

Kaliyo's crazy and murderous, but she's sexy in a dangerous and confident way. Skadge, on the other hand? He's just a pathetic tryhard. He's like a keyboard warrior sending rape threats to make himself look tough.

  11. I hope so. Much as I'm already bored of repeating expansion quests for my alts, I'm itching to continue the story with my SW main, so bring on the special 10th anniversary expansion, baby! I hope it would be some kind of development for the saboteurs too that are playing spies for Imps and Pubs. My SW Theatrix is practically dying to join the Pubs already, being sick of those slaver imps. :rak_04:
  12. I think it does matter... but I also want to play SWTOR, not Dragon Age Origins.

I wouldn't have minded if it's more like Dragon Age: Origins, which I considered to be a far superior game, even more so than KotOR.

Then again, the class stories in this game do have more variety than DA:O, so I don't think it's an accurate comparison to begin with anyway. The "class stories" of Origins only last about a few hours (less if speedran), then it intersects with the main quest like what SWtOR did with the expansions. Arguably, Origins did a better job intersecting the different classes since it has more nuances between each class' involvement, but still.

As it is, these expansions are a bane to roleplaying. What would my Bounty Hunter be doing fighting Revan and saving Makeb anyway? He'd be too busy making motherf***ing money! Because it's all about the mothereffing money, baby. lol So yeah, becoming an Alliance Commander, saving the galaxy from Revan, these expansions can sod off. They're ruining my roleplaying experience.

Like you could tell immediately from SoR's FPs (Legacy of Rakata stood out) how rushed and mediocre they were, not to mention how your toon gets default dialogue without you choosing your own dialogue wheel options. It's probably around that time, or even earlier since RotHC, that Bioware just rushed everything out for a quick dime, sacrificing class individuality and replacing it with default dialogue that's cheaper and faster to produce.

  13. Neither would I, honestly. (I haven't touched any of my characters aside from my Jedi Knight and Sith Inquisitor since the Eternal Empire story.)

In fact, I'm not even sure if it's worth doing all the other expansions since they too feel samey regardless of which class you play - Makeb, SoR, etc. Minus the difference between the Pubs and Imps of course.

And if you're someone who doesn't do ops like me, dailies for planets like Oricon lose their flavor because the meat of the story on those planets are in the ops.

There's a lot of post-class stories content that's easily skippable once you've played them once, it seems. False Emperor will always end with you fighting Malgus; Shadow of Revan will always end with you teaming up with Shan and Marr against Revan. The differences are trivial and insignificant. You could easily experience most of the important story content in a few months or so, and then it's goodbye! No more subs.

It's another story if your choice of class actually matters in the expansions or the main story. Hint: it doesn't.

  14. Scorpio CAN upload her conciousness to Iokath... or you destroy her in response to her actions up to that point. (It's one of the light-side/dark-side decisions.)

Regardless, it also means that a companion of IA gets to have such an important and nuanced decision (as opposed to just simple living or dying).

As for everything else... well, it's all opinion at the end of the day, so think what you will. (Truth be told, even though I do find reasons to enjoy the new content, I nonetheless do agree that nothing compares to the vanilla story of seeing the galaxy through the eyes of eight individuals going on their own separate adventures.)

I enjoy the content as well, but I wouldn't want to experience them eight times over.

The only reason I even bothered to play this game in spite my feelings about video games (and especially MMOs and multiplayers) is the separate adventures you get to have with each class, each adventure having its own roleplay and decisions. Now that Bioware (or EA) has taken that from me from future content, the main reason to play it is gone. Back to experiencing TV shows and binging Netflix. Loki's spin-off is not bad, certainly more interesting than another "Pubs vs. Imps" storyline. Disney's future content looks to be brighter now than Bioware's ironically (whereas it was the reverse prior to the expansions and maybe SoR). Even The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch look to be more interesting than Onslaught. You could tell Bioware ran out of steam the moment the Emperor returned for the zillionth time. Though to be fair, that Echoes of Oblivion ending was certainly better than The Last Skywalker and Palpatine's fate.

  15. I agree with you on Scorpio... but I would also like to remind you that for some, she's now dead.

I thought she's uploaded her consciousness to Iokath or something.

As for Firebrand... what are you on about? She only has real importance for one chapter in KOTFE. She does have a background role in a second... but she has to share it with Jorgan. And she can die at the end. But in any case, her relevance ends there. She really doesn't do much beyond her role in her reunion chapter. I don't see how she gets it better than Vette. (In fact, I'd argue Vette gets a bigger role since she actually always survives to KOTET, and plays a role during Vaylin's invasion... where she can potentially die in the end. Yeah... this killing off companions thing has its downsides, as been pointed out earlier.)

True. Guess I forgot about Jorgan since I haven't played the Trooper class yet. I guess you're right. But I don't know why. There's just something about Firebrand's side-plot that stood out a lot more, the way she has more input on your LS/DS decisions, the way you get to put your trust in her ability to complete the mission in spite of Jorgan's protest.

Yes, you do also kinda get to choose between Vette and Torian later... but I don't know, it just didn't feel like the same kind of decision as the one between Firebrand/Jorgan. The decision to choose to save Vette or Torian was a decision forced upon you - you're forced to save either one or the other because they're in danger of being killed (and if you're Sith Warrior, the decision's a no-brainer). I didn't even know Firebrand could be killed in that decision between her and Jorgan if you didn't tell me. Furthermore, the decision to put trust in that psychopathic and volatile Firebrand, that felt like a more personal decision with more weight and carried more meaning than the "Save your favorite companion!" one with Vette. Guess that's why I felt like Firebrand's storyline was more well-written than Vette's in KotFE. Reminds me of the time I decided to put trust in Jack during Mass Effect 2's suicide mission, choosing her to shield the team with her biotic.

Like, I haven't even played IA yet and I'm already more invested in Firebrand/Kaliyo as a character than Vette.

BTW, to cut BioWare some slack, I've heard somewhere that originally the plan was for expansions to continue the class stories, but when SWTOR's early sales weren't as high as EA liked, they gut the budget. This led to the unified stories in Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan. I dunno if BioWare still wants to do individual stories, but it's probably safe to say that even if they do have the budget now (I dunno if they do, though), they probably have been entrenched too deep in the hole to dig out now.

Yeah, it's all academic now with EA ruining everything as usual. All the good intentions in the world mean nothing in the world of money, money, money.

  16. Such a shame and waste of potential. Initially, I was glad that you finally get a same-sex romance with Jaesa, so much so that I pretty much had my SW abandon Quinn just for her.

But now? After reading these posts and thinking about it... nah. I doubt that relationship would bear anything more fruitful than that Ossus kiss. Such a waste. When I first learned about Jaesa's development on Ossus, I was under the mistaken impression that she's gonna get her own extended storyline or something. lol

Man, this game is really gonna be dead soon, if not already. Everything's being streamlined into a single storyline instead of having any distinct flavors from each unique class storylines.

Except JK and Agents of course. You guys get to have the most fun, what with Scorpio, Firebrand and Kira playing a far bigger role than any other companions combined. Sure, Vette and the other companions had their own chapters in KotFE, but it's usually one or two chapters with insignificant side-plots, whereas Scorpio had like an entire huge chunk of storyline to herself, while Firebrand got to have a far more significant role in the main plot (what was Vette doing again during KotFE? Doing something trivial that I forgot). I get that the IA class is extremely popular, perhaps that's why Bioware showed favoritism towards them instead.

What could fix this ultimately is to give the other companions more screentime during this Onslaught event, perhaps having the Jedi padawans like Jaesa and Nadia have more roles to play in the fight against Malgus. But Bioware probably won't risk that. Nah. That would mean they would take creative risk just for better storylines (as opposed to striving for better profits and player-pandering). These gaming corporations, I tell you. You see one of them, you've seen all of them. Predictable af. That's why I don't play a lot of videogames anymore. Once I'm done with the class storylines, I'm outta here. It's a wasteland here. It was a mistake to return here.

Sidenote: I'm sick of Theron and Lana. I think they're highly overrated. I'd take Jaesa over Lana any day. Even Theran is more entertaining with his Holiday relationship than Theron the whiny "Why bother sabotaging the Imps if people are gonna die anyway?" Like, shut the hell up, Theron. You've played double agent before, you know how much pressure my SW is under. Stop giving her crap.

  17. The way I justified it, interestingly enough, is that my SW didn't actually become LS until Oasis on Tatooine, and even then, she's still tainted by hate and bitterness, so it's not an immediate "I'm LS now and all rainbows and sunshine!" The reason why my SW didn't corrupt Jaesa was because 1) Oasis took place before you could corrupt her, and 2) because she admired Jaesa's purity and didn't want to taint that pureness, knowing just how much that spiral of hate and dark emotions have messed up her own life.

So it made quite a lot of sense for my SW to still kill Pubs because she's still loyal to the Empire, even if she tries to keep Jaesa's heart free from the darker sides of the galaxy.

The only point in time that this changed was after the Jedi Under Siege/5.0/Imperial Saboteur storyline, when my SW got fed up with the Empire's ways. She always hated slavery even within the Empire (she simply preferred them over Pubs because she felt Jedi are hypocrite xenophobes who wronged her simply because she's red-skinned), so this was the perfect opportunity to switch sides. Unfortunately, this is war, and switching sides ain't that easy. It makes it worse that she's forced to play double-agent, thereby endangering her life and all whom allies with her, so she has to keep up appearances and makes it look like things are normal in front of the Siths and Empire.

That's also why these "saboteur" dialogue options are so fun because you get to practice the least amount of bloodshed possible for the Pubs within the game's capabilities as an mmo. It's a compromise for sure, but an acceptable and a good enough one for me.

  18. Disagreed. That's all.

Wait, guess I'll add a little more.

I guess I can "kinda" see why people would find it dull. Diplomacy, politics, gathering allies, etc, etc. It's more like Star Trek than Star Wars, so why is it in this game, right? Well, I liked it, the whole sacrificing your strength to save the Jedi masters and essentially becoming a martyr. It's a pretty inspiring role to roleplay with, and even the post-chapter 1 plotlines are pretty endearing too, with you gathering allies through your inspirational skills alone. It shows that the Consular/Barsen'thor's strength lies with her wisdom, not her raw power like JK/SW. Whereas the Inquisitor uses that intelligence to manipulate, the Consular uses it to empower others.

...unless you're playing a jaded DS Consular like me who killed every master because of "the big picture." The way I see it, the Consular storyline could go two ways: a martyr or a ruthless politician who gets the job done regardless of the cost (also see Supreme Chancellor Leontyne Saresh). I kinda like that you get to choose such options as it allows for roleplaying opportunities. Right now, I'm at Corellia Chapter 3 and my Consular's still DS, but thanks to the influence of some of her more LS companions like Iresso and Nadia, she's becoming softer and nicer and tries to live up to her title of Barsen'thor and a diplomat. It's a nice character arc to roleplay out.

Overall, I enjoy that you get a storyline that's more than just about being a ****** warrior kicking the bad guys' butt. The Consular storyline is a unique one that's about diplomacy, and I'm eternally grateful for that. If anything, a LS Consular would downright fit in as Alliance Commander due to her diplomatic skills.

  19. Old thread, but coming back and playing the Consular for the first time, I have some thoughts on the matter.

The thing is, the companion interactions are more interesting if I play a DS Consular. I understand that a LS Consular would be incompatible with the others, but I roleplayed my Consular as more of a jaded cynic tired with the Jedi's stiff ideals of "there is no emotion" and not doing enough to stop the Imps because "one must not give into hate." So my Consular couldn't really care less about the Jedi mysticism anyway, so Theron's cynicism's got no issue with my toon (though she still doesn't care much for his obsession with technology).

Qyzen, Iresso and Nadia present an interesting character arc for my jaded DS Consular. Because my Jedi doesn't give a crap about traditions and mysticism, Qyzen's traditions initially peeved her to no end, trapping oneself in some archaic tradition and suffering for it. She eventually outgrew this mentality when she saw how devoted Qyzen was to his cause, however, and how it helped him become a more honor-bound man (or lizard) because of the Scorekeeper's influence.

Iresso's a boy-scout, so she initially finds him to be a tool. But his code of honor eventually won her over as well, plus his ability to look past the Consular's DS ways because he understood (and sympathized) with her hatred for the Imps, to the point where he even expressed his love for her.

Nadia... man, that's an interesting one. I like to think of her as similar to what my LS Sith Warrior did with Jaesa, keeping her from the corruption of the DS that my toon might have been involved with. It was more satisfying to keep Jaesa pure of course since she's like 1000x better a character than Nadia, but the idea works with Nadia too,

    especially after her father's demise.

My Consular strives not to influence her in any cruel or hateful ways, so she tries not to express her hatred too often in front of her.

Then there's Zenith. lol What a shame he couldn't be romanced, because my Consular's character arc would've turned out a lot more differently, perhaps darker, if he and her could traverse the galaxy together on an Imperial slaughter. But ah well. As it is, because of the influence of the other companions, she eventually sees how extreme Zenith's actions can be as well (such as wanting to punish those Balmorrian refugees for siding with Imps out of desperation).

Overall, through the magic of roleplaying, I found a way to work around these flawed characters easily. There's almost nothing that couldn't be fixed with a little headcanon manipulation.
