  1. 1) Don't do any missions but the class missions then. If you find yourself under levelled then you can do a few extra ones. As far as easy goes, the game is never really challenging during the story. PVP and other PvE activities are where the challenge presents itself! 2) Just use gear that adds to your mastery stat more than anything else then. Mastery is good for overall, but when it comes to different roles you may want to have higher values in other things. 3) Well as far as grouping goes, there is a find group button near your minimap. Click it and you can find groups for flashpoints, which are like mini dungeons, You gain levels well with them though. Heroics are slightly harder missions that every planet has. You can do them with just a companion really. As far as crafting goes, I advise you look up any basic crafting guides to see what each crafting discipline can make, and what gathering skills they need.
  2. Hey there! I quite enjoyed giving a few tips to people in part 1 of the mini-series I am doing ( http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=919953 ) So I thought "May as well give a few more tips for people who have more questions than 'what class should I play?'" And here I am! In this guide, I plan on talking a bit about a few more basic questions people have when they actually get into the game. Nothing complicated or going to give you a huge edge, just a few simple answers to simple questions! How do I get a lightsaber? Oh, that's an easy one, play the game! You get one through the story by roughly level 10 so don't worry! How do I get new outfits? Well, this is a basic one a lot of people wonder, and the answer is just as basic. Play the game! Throughout levelling your character as whatever class you are, the game gives you outfit parts at regular intervals, some look cool, and some don't, but that's a good way to get them without any effort at all! Another popular way is to buy outfits off the GTN (Galactic Trade Network). The better-looking ones can be pretty pricey though! And another way? Buy outfits or cartel packs off the cartel market. This generally costs real money though. GTN? Cartel Market? What are those? Well the GTN is where most people sell items. Think of it as this games Auction house. And like an auction house, the people get to choose the price of the items they are selling. And lately those prices have been pretty high, so you'll need to make money somehow! And the cartel market? Well, that is the game's way of selling you items and packs through cartel coins, which generally cost money, but that isn't the only way to get them! And how do I make money? And do I ned to pay for cartel coins? Well, to make money you just have to play through the game, sell some of the items you have that you don't need, and there you go! Money! But it won't be very much...to make a good amount of money, you'll need to get into the GTN market. This can be a tricky topic (tricky enough that I may do a whole thread on it if people want) but here are a few tips. Get crew skills for your companions, and use them to make things you can sell on the GTN. I advise dyes as they sell pretty decently and aren't too hard to make. As for cartel coins, that is a bit harder. You can get a security key for your account and receive 100 free cartel coins every month so that's good! And if you are a subscriber you get another 500 every month too. But aside from that, and having people use your referral code, there isn't much you can do but spend actual money. Crew skills? Companions? Oh, don't worry about companions. The game gives you those throughout your story, and every class gets its own unique companions, some of which you can romance, and all of which have their own stories to play through also! Crew skills? A bit more complex. Crew skills are skills that you get on the Fleet of your side, and teach to your companions, they are used to make items or gather materials (to make items for other crew skills) I advise looking for charts of what crew skills go with what gathering skills, it will save a lot of time! Okay, I have my clothes, my sabre, my companions and crew skills. But what else can I do? There is plenty you can do in the game aside from your story! You can do flashpoints which are 4 man (or woman, alien, attack helicopter, I don't judge) jobs to get a goal done. They are a good way to gain experience and quite fun! Then there are operations, 8 man (yadda yadda) jobs, which can be challenging and most advise you wait till max level to start. There is PVP (Player vs Player) which, as the name suggests, has you fight others roughly your level. How do I level up fast? A lot of people want to level up fast so they can do the end game stuff fast too! My advice? Go slow if this is your first character, enjoy the side missions. Some are better than any mission your class will have! But my advice isn't an answer! If you want to level fast, do side missions, do Heroics (harder mission, but you should be fine with just a companion) on every planet and you will be a high enough level to just do your story in no time! Try joining a guild for EXP (experience) boosts! And you can also use EXP boosts (some given by the game, or bought on the cartel market) to gain more EXP for what you do! Guilds? Okay, we are reaching the end here! Guilds, and let's throw in Legacy as well! A guild is a group of people that have their own chat, and sometimes stronghold to hang out in. They generally do things together depending on what type of guild they are. There are RP (RolePlay) guilds, PVP guilds, PVE (Player vs Environment) guilds, and some are just casual "let's hang out" guilds. Finding a guild that fits for you can make the game way more fun. Most guilds advertise themselves s just listen put on General chat and you should be fine! Your Legacy is the last name you give to all the characters on your chosen server. It connects them a bit and also provides some useful bonuses if you look through it (which I advise you do!) And there you go! Some basic questions answered in as simple a way as I could manage. This is no way all you need to know, just a basic understanding of all the topics mentioned! If there are any things you think I missed, you'd like in another guide, expanded upon, or even just general advise or criticism, please do tell!
  3. Hey! I just wanted to put this here for people who didn't know you could get a free mount right now using the code below, and also a free pet! NYCantina16= One free mount (valid for a few more days I have heard) SWCantina17= Second free mount SWCELEBRATION17= Free pet
  4. Thank you again for the warning! I really do appreciate it! Any other advise to give?
  5. Thank you very much for informing me! I plan on changing that right now! And as I said, i'm a real beginner, especially to the forums. How do I add a signature exactly?
  6. Hey there! If you stumbled across and are bothering to read this, it means you probably need some basic info on SWTOR! With the hundreds of guides by people far more qualified than me, you may get a bit confused by the terms they throw out, or not get your simple questions answered. This guide is to help with that! It covers a few parts of the very basics, things I thought when i started playing, and you may be thinking now, with little of the complicated terms! Without further ado, the basics of SWTOR! (Star Wars The Old Republic) Why should I play? Here is a question you may be asking yourself, why should I even play? Well that all depends. Do you: A) Want to learn more about Star Wars Lore? B)Want to experience a good story in an MMO? C) Want to feel like an amazing hero or despicable villain? D) Just want to have a good time in a game with quite a few people on it? E) Do you want to Role-Play a Star Wars character you've had in your head for a while? If you answered yes for all 5, then you should really play! Even if you didn't, you can try the game for free, so I see no reason to not give it a shot! Can my computer/laptop run it? If you are worried about your hardware specs, I advise the just looking up the game specs and compare them to your rig! The game isn't too new, so most systems can run it, even if you need to turn down the graphics a bit. Should I come back? If you used be to a subscriber, or just used to play a while ago and you are wondering whether or not to return, then my answer? Just try it! You loose very little by starting the game again, hoping in for an hour or two, and seeing how you feel about it. If you did use to be a subscriber, but don't know if it is worth it to subscribe again, or are making a brand new account, then you can always use this referral link! You can get 7 days of subrciption as an ex-subscriber, and if you are completely new, you get a few useful bonuses. And yes yes, I do get something too, so we both win! What class should I play? Here is a question I mulled over for a very, very! long time. What class should I play? Again that depends on a few things: A) Do you want to have the force? B) Do you usually prefer ranged or meele combat? C) Do you want to enjoy the story, or want to rush and get to end game things? Truth is, every class is fun it's own way, and no class is amazingly overpowered, there is no 'best class' and all have a story that someone may enjoy. So I will break down the basics of them (with little to no spoilers for story) right now!" Jedi Knight: The Jedi Knight is the 'Poster boy' and a go to class for SWTOR. You are a Jedi, and basically, the chosen one. You travel the galaxy stopping Sith, and fighting the ultimate evil, the emperor himself. Many suggest you play this class at least once, as it is a great experience for anyone who has ever wanted to be a Jedi. Game play-wise, the Jedi Knight is a melee class and can either be a Sentinel or Guardian. The guardian get to be a Tank (They soak up damage) or damage dealer, while the sentinel can only do DPS (main damage dealer) but get to wield two light sabers! So if that has always been a dream of yours, go for it! Sith Warrior: The opposite of the Jedi knight, the Sith Warrior is the ultimate Sith experience. You are powerful, and only get more powerful as the story goes on. Many suggest you play this class if you ever wanted to know what the dark side felt like! They get the exact same class options as the Jedi Knight, just with different names and animations. (Sith Marauder= Jedi Sentinel. Sith Juggernaut=Jedi Guardian) Jedi Consular: The sentinel is a unique case, with many loving and hating the story. Unlike the Knight who is the ultimate chosen one, the consular, while great, is more of you ordinary Jedi. You travel around, saving the galaxy through diplomacy and relations rather than non-stop *** whoopin, not to say that isn't there! If you have ever wanted to play a more calm, diplomatic Jedi, the consular story will be perfect for you! As far as combat goes, the consular can either be a Jedi Shadow, or a Jedi Sage. The shadow can be a Tank, or damage dealer, and gets stealth abilities, along with using a double-sided lightsaber (similar to Darth Maul!). The Jedi Sage uses their saber less, and focuses more on mid-long range combat with the force (and rocks, so many rocks) to beat their foes! They can be healers or damage dealers. Sith Inquisitor: The Sith Inquisitor story, again, is a mixed bag. Many, including myself, enjoyed it for it interesting detail on the force and sith rituals. Many other found it boring and repetitive. If you want to play a slave who rises in power and influence due to their strength in the force, this is the class for you! Combat? Sith Inquisitor can either be a Sith Assassin (spooky) or Sith sorcerer. Same as before, mirros of republic side! (Assassin=Shadow. Sorcerer=Sage) Smuggler: No more force uses, now we get guns! The smuggler story is loved by quite a few as a funny, personal, less galaxy saving, more credit earning, kind of fun tale! If you want to play a loud mouth, Han solo ancestor (he is in my cannon anyway) then this is your calling! Combat wise, the smuggler is as you would expect, a long range character. Well, the gunslinger is. The soundrel, which is the second path the smuggler can take is a more close to mid range character, with stealth generators, shotguns, and one pistol, as opposed to the gunslingers two! If you want range and a cover system, go gunslinger. If you want stealth, kicking a sith in the crotch, and healing, go scoundrel! Imperial Agent: The opposite of the smuggler in more ways than one, the agent is a story that many call the very best in SWTOR! A tale of espionage, betrayal, and the ability to completely change the story depending on your choices (which most other classes don't have, and not to that extent anyway) makes the agent a go to for anyone who can only play one story, but doesn't need a saber to feel powerful! You go around the galaxy carrying out the work of the Empire, and find out so much about both the Empire and Republic, I wouldn't pass it up! Combat in mind, the Agent can either be a sniper or operative. The sniper gets a long range combat style and a, you guessed it, sniper! While the operative gets a stealth pack, and vibroknives to kill of his unlucky opponents. (Sniper=Gunslinger. Operative=Scoundrel) Trooper: We are reaching the end here, but we finish strong with the Trooper and Bounty hunter! The Trooper is a republic soldier who gets to lead his own squad. And not just any squad, THE squad. The most elite that the republic has to offer. The story is seen as some to be a very fun military tale in Star Wars, while others see it as boring, and too predictable to be worth their time! Being the only class I haven't played, I will leave the class story to you! (I'm sure it is just fine). As a Trooper you can either be a Commando, or a Vanguard. Commando's can be healers or damage dealers, get ranged combat, and, oh yeah, massive assault cannons! Vanguards get to be tanks or damage dealers, and can use blaster rifles, not as large, but also very fun. Their combat style is more up close that the Commando. Bounty Hunter: And last but not least, the bounty hunter. The story of the bounty hunter is simple. You want to participate win the great hunt, a test for all hunters to see who the very best is! Many see this story as a fun tale of a mean, killing machine, or a more passive bounty collector (depending how you play him), while others just find it boring. You never know if you will like it or not, so if anything I have said..um..typed, interests you, go for it! Combat! The bounty hunter can be a mercenary or power-tech! The mercenary gets to dual wield blasters and can only be a damage dealer, but hey, missiles! The power-tech uses a single blaster, but makes up for it by having many of it's abilities be flamethrower based! The powertech can either be a Tank or damage dealer, and is more melee focused than the mercenary! (Mercenary=Commando. Power-tech=Vanguard) And there you have it, all the very basics of the classes, so hopefully, that helped steer you in the right direction, even just a little! And another question I asked myself! Do I want to pay for this? If you have never played before, I highly suggest trying the game before subscribing, it only makes sens to test a car before buying it! The Free 2 Play model honestly is more of a really nice demo, than a really bad game, so see the subscription as actually playing everything the game has to offer! And if you pay even 5 dollars worth of currency of the game, you become a preferred player and get a few more benefits that just F2P (Free to Play) As far as the very very basics go, for me anyway, that about covers it! There is so much more a new person can wonder though! How to make money in the game, what is up with cartel coins, how do i get them, how do i get my character to look nicer, guilds, role play, all of that! So if you read any of this and enjoyed it, please tell me, and I'll be happy to continue this (very late) guides in Lay man terms! And if you have constructive criticism, please leave that too! I love to get better at helping, and just writing in general! Part 2 http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=920562
