  1. Have several related ideas, all involving colour and customizations for various items and components.

    • I think that an interesting option for mounts and vehicles could be the authorization/utilization of dye packs. Vehicles would be differentiated not by colour as they are now, but instead by pattern. Fire patterns, wavy, etc. but you can make them any colour.

    • While we're on the subject, perhaps more dye packs or customizations? Not just the vibrant cartoony green, but more subdued forest green or olive colours. Why not go the lightsaber route and add mint green, sea green? Note, I'm not saying only expand green, just using it as an example.

    • A way to customize your dye packs when crafting would be really cool. You have a purple primary and a green secondary? Put them together via crafting and make your own crazy creation.

    • Speaking of lightsabers, I think it would be interesting to be able to craft more detailed crystals. That is, not just craft a red crystal/white core. Make a gold core, green aura, pink glow, decide exactly what colours and shine you desire. You could get some really fun and funky combinations that could easily personalize and differentiate your beloved laser sword from others, a real mark of uniqueness for your Jedi/Sith characters. They may mock your mint/pink/black blade, but when they're struck down by clashing colours of light, it is you who shall have the final laugh.

(I mentioned crafting, admittedly, so if I've put this topic in the wrong subforum do let me know.)

  2. So now there I am, with my Inquisitor LIGHTING UP THE PRISONER AND TELLING HIM TO SING ME A HAPPY SONG?! I was literally cackling with glee. Real. Life. Cackling. My husband looked over at my screen. "What are you laughing at?" "OMG I'M TORTURING SOMEONE IN A CUT SCENE WITH LIIIIIIGHTNIIIINNNG! AHAHAHAHAHA!" A few minutes later, I looked over at his computer screen...and he was downloading SWTOR. His main is an Inquisitor. he made that guy sing him a happy song, too.

That has got to be one of the best things I've read all year, I love it. I missed out on that one, as I chose the Light-side option.

In closing, my *personal* recommendation is to play all 8 stories before you go to Illum, which is followed by Rise of the Hutt Cartel, Shadow of Revan, Knights of the Fallen Empire, and Knights of the Eternal Throne, and finally, as of this current moment, Iokath. Basically IGNORE the purple triangle on your ship's terminal that will pop up in your 40's because those are the quest starters for the later expansion packs which, as a subscriber (I know this because only subscribers can post on the forums) you own all of the current story content. They pop up because they are level triggered (it used to take a LOT longer to level) and there will be spoilers to content in your own story you might not have seen yet.

Anyway, I suggest this because after the end of Act 3 of your story, the game starts narrowing down the story. Illum and RotHC are split into two stories, Imp/Pub, and SoR, KotFE, and KotET is one single story. All of them will give some flavor dialog in regards to your class, but it's not terribly personal. Experience the other 7 stories. ESPECIALLY since they all make vague references to one another (Imperial Agent does this the most. There are occasional call outs to the other class stories as off hand comments from the NPC's and stuff. Nothing major, you don't lose out on any understanding of the story, but they're fun little Easter Eggs when you DO pick up on them.

Nice to get such detailed advice from a pro. I will keep it all in mind, thanks! Though I played through Ilum already without knowing this. Derp.

And then you get someone like me who gets all super excited when someone new expresses interest in the story :D

Thanks! Your enthusiasm is as infectious as rakghoul plague! :rak_03:

Really, as you mentioned in the beginning the story and more than that the agency of this game is what makes it so enjoyable!

And if you'll let me ramble in return...

If you like games like this and you don't mind dated 90's graphics, then I highly recommend Planescape Torment. It's about five bucks or something on GOG (Good Old Games) and worth every penny. Instead of dark side/light side there are NINE "alignments" you become through your choices. A sliding two-axis scale that is determined solely by your actions. You're never told the values of your decisions (which I think is a plus.) You only find out your alignment when you check your character sheet. So instead of gaining "points" in a mechanic you engage in discovery of who you've decided to play as, and you're rarely asked a simple binary question. Usually there are three even four different ways to handle a situation. You can also join one of several philosophical clubs who fight for control of a wacky city that serves as a trading post between dimensions.

And the side characters, oh the side characters! There is no more bizarre motley crew of oddballs this side of Korriban. It's thoughtful, engaging, dark, and at times hilarious. My only caveat is that the combat system is not explained very well, so an online spoiler-free guide would be well worth searching for, and trust me, you'll want spoiler-free as this game spins a masterful tale about identity, ethics, and human nature that I cannot praise enough for its depth.

  3. I'm not a spacebar jockey if that's what you're thinking.

I wasn't thinking that, because I have no idea what that means, ha ha ha.

But. BUT! You? Man, you've only played (are still playing?) the Inquisitor from what I'm gathering.

I know, I know, the Inquisitor storyline is like a book I can't put down. I knew I wanted to play a Sith sorcerer kind of character because I love all the Expanded Universe ancient Sith history. I also happen to be fascinated with archaeology in the real world, so when I was given a story that gives me a chance to do some ancient Sith archaeology? It has been this nerd's dream come true. Talos Drellik said "I'm a Naga Sadow man myself," and I couldn't help but think "I know who that is!" It's a storyline that involves the kinds of characters I enjoy reading and writing about and while I have tried the Trooper story a little bit; it just hasn't "grabbed" me the way the Sith Inquisitor tale has.

Regarding Talos, he is my most recent sidekick and I must concur that he is a delight to bring along on missions. He is such a dork and I love him to bits for it, partly because he acts pretty much how I would if I lived in the kind of crazy universe he inhabits, with wide eyed wonder and enthusiasm.

  4. If you're super excited about getting companions though, play Knights of the Fallen Empire (KotFE). You'll literally get five times more companions than you actually need (At max level you can use 8 for crafting and one to quest with. So you only need nine companions *IF* you're a crafter). My Agent has about 40 companions. They...aren't rare.

It's less "excited about companions" and more that I enjoy the stories and getting to know the characters. I know some folks are lukewarm about it, but I still genuinely enjoy Bioware's writing and characters (who else here has played Planescape Torment?) I'm enjoying Talos Drellik's unbridled enthusiasm for the mysterious, I love learning about Khem Val and his connection to the ancient past, and I like seeing Ashara's internal struggle and journey from Jedi to something in between. That's the real fun for me, the side stories of the colourful cast of characters you accrue through the game.

  5. You will. I know it doesn't seem like it, but when you hit max level, doing Heroic missions will grant you a lot of money.... Money makes gets a lot easier.

    That's excellent news to hear.

What server are you on? If you want Treek and you're either on Ebon Hawk or Shadowlands I'll purchase one for you. The mercenary contract can be traded.

That's incredibly kind of you, but not necessary, I'm on Jedi Covenant anyway.

  6. If you're interested in extra companions, pre-KOTFE there is the Ewok Treek and the HK-51 assassination droid. That is assuming you aren't already aware of them. Treek can be purchased from either the Cartel Market or by buying her contract (she's a merc) from the legacy vendor in the Cartel Market section of Fleet, though there is a legacy level requirement to at least use the credit-purchased version. HK-51 is obtained after a quest chain.

Yeah, I'm aware of Treek but don't have those million creds to afford the little fuzzball.

  7. Bounty Contact Week should be starting today. If not today, very soon.

After that the next event in the rotation is the Gree event, followed by the Rakghoul event. Just FYI in case you're also after other event rewards.

Might as well, but I had my eye on the green/black 'saber crystal and the infected varactyl mount. Oh well, patience is a virtue, I suppose. :)

  8. I'm generally a solo player, don't particularly enjoy grouping up, but the good experiences I've had on Harbinger outweigh the bad in regards to grouping and have typically encouraged me to try more group stuff.

I suppose it's all down to a person's initial experience. If you met jerks right out the gate that will colour your opinion and the same goes for if you meet some friendly folks first thing. Thus you get people having vastly different impressions about the same community.

I'm thinking I'll do as one person suggested and make a test character on another server see what happens that way. So wish my new Sith Assassin Gedräsh luck as he makes the galaxy safe for tyranny and oppression. :wea_03:

  9. On a more serious note, I'm often surprised at what comes out of the character's mouth. Quite different than what I selected on the wheel. Anyone know why they didn't make the characters say what's actually on the wheel? They think it would be redundant, or wanting to surprise the player?

    I've noticed this too. Sometimes it will come out completely the wrong way than how I intended it. I'd think something more descriptive would make sense. Rather than a summary of what they might say, the way they have [Lie] in front of some choices. My idea would be something like this;

    1. [insult Khem Val]
    2. [offer to help]
    3. [brofist Khem Val, because he's just that awesome.] :rak_03:

  10. There are weirdos everywhere online...

    Truer words never spoken...

Eventually there will be one superserver and its going to be Harbinger. Just get it over with and go there now.

Yeah, my brother plays Lord of the Rings Online, and when I saw that they started doing server mergers I couldn't help but wonder if it's a sign, a... harbinger if you will, of the beginning of the end.

  11. If you come to Harb, bring thick skin. :)

I used to frequent the fetid pools of 4chan... I've built up a small measure of tolerance.

Harbinger is a bit of a cesspit though.

Would you say it's a "wretched hive of scum and villainy?" ;)

  12. So all of my characters are currently on the Jedi Covenant server but I find it is sometimes rather sparsely populated, which leaves me wondering what I will do once I get to high levels and begin playing Operations etc. Even more so as I often play later in the evening and many have gone to bed by the time I log on. I've heard that US side that Harbinger is the more active server but I thought I would perhaps ask more seasoned players their thoughts on this.

Would a server switch make sense or be beneficial, or is staying put the better option? Looking forward to the community's answers regarding the matter.

  13. I'm afraid not, you can change specs but you can't change classes, while technically Vanguard and Commando are the same base call [Trooper], once you choose to be either a Vanguard or a Commando, you cannot undo that choice. If you want to play a Commando you will unfortunately have to re-roll a new character. Sorry.

Well that's frustrating. Thanks for the information.

  14. For my two, both of them have a little mental character sheet, a sort of origin story that I use to inform their choices in the game.

For example, Ymara, my new trooper, was a small town girl (living in a lonely world) whose hometown was attacked by the Empire. Bombs and fire and all the usual rough times. However, the place was saved when an army of Republic Troopers came and fought the Empire back. As a little girl she viewed these valiant souls as knights in white, and told herself she wanted to join their ranks and be a proud soldier of the Republic.

She lands on Ord Mantell and sees all the corruption, finding that her white knights have some real bad eggs... she's furious. She is enraged and resolves that she is going to be "one of the good ones." To be that valiant ideal she grew up believing in, that white knight who swoops in to save the day. She follows her heart, true to her word and her duty, never harming innocents. She has absolutely no qualms disobeying her superiors, for she believes she answers to a higher authority of truth and justice.

However, when it comes to corruption and/or the Empire, she is merciless. Anger and disgust for the people who ransacked her home... when speaking of the Empire I go for the more ruthless angry dialogue choices.

So what about you? What little side stories have you written for your characters?

  15. I didn't think Sith were restricted from romance or other dalliances, I mean lore-wise Malgus had his Twi'lek lover. I kind of figured the Sith could do whatever they wanted, given that their philosophy tends towards selfishness.

Of course, given this selfish nature, I imagine it would be more common that such relationships are casual and/or exploitative. I can't imagine many Sith having genuine love in their hearts. It wouldn't shock me if some of the higher-up Sith have a harem or concubines. I'd imagine there are a lot of Sith who engage in the bow-chicka-wow-wow. :rak_03:
