  1. Hi everyone :)

    Hey, Dusk!

Random I'm looking at you :D:p

Got it! I will misbehave for both of us!

In other news I finally put a character all the way through current content -Bounces up and down- sure it's my test character (SW) but my immediate response was that I now need/want to do my main SW playthrough, so that's a good sign right? :D

Gratz! Wait... You had BH last time, no? Oh, Dusk, you change your toons faster then I edit my posts! ;)

    uhh ... Zakuul Stronghold? :D

    The one that Vaylin bombed?

Not that crazy these days, though. *sigh*

Give us 30 seconds of Arcann in next update and this tread will be on fire :p.

    *swoons*

My job is done here! *flyes away

  2. But saving Vaylin would make Arcann happy ... then ... you could take him into the commanders room on Odessen and turn the monitor off, leaving your imagination to take over for a few minutes! :D

Bah. I am sure my SI can get a foot-rub by other means. How do you say it? You scratch my back, I scratch yours :).

And I am sure Esh PC do not even have to ask... Just suggest... ^_^.

Edit: Come to think... What can you possibly want from a BF you can only get by bringing his dead sister back to life?

  3. I love Russians! <3 I'm on your side here!!

    Yay! <3

The Russians did it! .... hmmm ... thinking on it ... most of the Vaylin mob are Russian .... time to send out 30,000 e-mails.

    Wait what? Seriously?

Males. First, they decide that being hit over the head with the proper cast iron frying pan is no fun. So they open the borders to capitalism to replace said reliable frying pans with a Teflon lightweight... something. And then they miss a good old Grandma heirloom so much that they are ready to join the Cult of crazy Dark Side Lady!

Hmmm Russian hackers, huh? I suppose that be a back up plan. We need more Russians! :D

Don't look at me! I am hardwired to like broad shoulders, narrow hips and no lumps of fat in chest area :p. Vaylin is the total opposite of that, is she not? And her lovely personality will not make up for that :D.

Here, I talked about Arcann, so it is on topic ;). Mmmm.

  4. The Russians did it! .... hmmm ... thinking on it ... most of the Vaylin mob are Russian .... time to send out 30,000 e-mails.

What? Why it is always us? I know we are cool, but come on... What happened to presumption of innocence?

Edit: I would love to get a slice of "Russian hackers pie" btw. I heard there are good money in it and at least I will not be blamed without being guilty :D. Where can I apply?

  5. Well, well! Next poster with a need to express their disdain at Arcann will get a fruit basket. They never fail to spark a conversation :D. Then there is no content, Hive flourishes on idle speculations, fan-fiction, head-cannons, critique*, “he is a monster” posts and salt ;). Oh... Are we Dark Side entity? Like Sel Makor?

I seen good one, but mostly it is same old, just expressed in different ways.

*whispers* someone lost their temper at daddy's shield...

Speaking of shields... What if PC used that Valkoryon Force shield in place of the Knight one (with appropriate animations)? Would it not be slightly less “what, whyyyyyy” moment?

  6. I don't like the term 'Mary Sue' and I do think it's overused these days to slam any gifted and good-natured character with a label.

Mary Sue have many faces. Sometimes they can even be fun (like Charname in many BW games). But there are certain traits that always make them to stand out and annoy.

Should she be this skilled without ever having actually flown these ships? No, probably not, but little Ani was superiorly skilled at pod racing and flying as well without any explanation other than "High midi chlorians/the Force". Perhaps someone should have actually said it out loud but I always assumed Rey was blessed in the same way.

Little Ani also had some time to practice too. And he never actually crossed the finish line before Jedi shown up. And Little Ani character caught a lot of flack because of his incredible luck. In any case, if one character had a lot of Gary Stu traits, should we justify another character having a lot of Mary Sue traits on the basis of “it have been done before”?

Furthermore, is it so wrong for her to have certain skills she's naturally good at? What of painters who've never attended art class yet know to create masterpieces? Authors who've never published a book and then deliver a best seller? Cooks who haven't attend culinary classes but go on instinct and their own creativity to create something fabulous? Dancers who only need to see a performance once, or hear the music and just 'feel' it, knowing how to move? There are plenty real people in the world with natural gifts and talents they didn't study or train for so why is it so horrible for a fictional character to have a natural gift?

Of course it is not horrible for a fictional character to be gifted. But what if this talented person shows a new trick to an old cook while making his signature dish, manages to do a Revoltade/540 on the second try and delivers a much better performance then an equally talented actor who had years to perfect his craft? And they understand a not so common language. I always sing a lullaby to my willing suspension of disbelieve then it comes to Force, but in Rey's case it just stares back at me with wide open eyes :(.

She's constantly looking for her parents and seeking a place to belong.

She is loyal and she seeks a place to belong? This are her flaws? How many times have you seen this: “She was multi-talented, everything come naturally to her, but she was shy. And not a very good cook.” ;) I was thinking that Disney SW movie will have different standards from fanfiction... Who am I kidding? I read better fanfics! Well, at least she have not jumped to the call immediately and was afraid.

So desperately in fact that she's lured to Kylo and thus Snoke because Snoke manages to manipulate her desperation to find a connection and answers.

There is one very important ingredient that was missing – if a flaw is exposed and exploited, there are consequences. In his second movie Luke rushes without thinking to save his friends. He almost dies, survives by a sheer dumb luck (the Force), had to be saved and looses a hand. In her second movie Rey rushes without thinking to redeem Kylo and she... hmm. Gets mind probed (yes, that did hurt) for Luke location (but he dies anyway), got smacked on her head with a lightsaber (how... humiliating), kicks some major *** (ermmm) and escapes (on her own). We do not even see her staring at unconscious Kylo, thinking about all the pain and suffering he will cause and, like Luke, being tempted to end it in one cut.

    She doesn't succeed right away.

Yeh. Sometimes she have to give it another try?

But I guess we live in a world where everything needs to be labeled and we're quick to judge, especially when a character doesn't suit our fancy or ideal. Where we maintain our own, sometimes double, standards on who gets to be extraordinary and who doesn't.

I would be saying same things about Roy. Or Anakin. I disliked that one a lot before the Clone Wars gave him some flesh. Am I judging Rey too quickly or harshly? Maybe. Am I that wrong to label Rey as Mary Sue? Who knows. But I think that she is boring, annoying, have too many talents and as a result unrelatable. Luke did not passed his torch to her, she was replacing him so fast, that she was the one grieving for Han! “Who is this girl, tell me everything about her!” - sounds eerily familiar too.

Another very important thing (for me at least) - LJ story being... what it was, I just could not help but to get into critical W T F mode. Maybe you are correct and I am so annoyed by all inconsistencies, lack of logic, green milk and plain bad writing of LJ that I am too harsh. But I am not the only one, yes? Hmmm. What about Ashoka Tano? She is extraordinary, is she not? She started annoying and cocky (and it was expected - she was a kid), but she grown and evolved. Or Hera Syndulla. Loved her. Do you know, have they been slapped with any labels?

P.S. If anyone would tell me that I will like SW cartoon much more then a SW movie... This is almost embarrassing.

  7. Good rebuttal - hard to argue with any of your points.

Hmm, lets try. I do not wish to bore you, so lets go over only one argument. I will try to be as objective as I can :). Lets compare Luke training to Rey training. Both are prodigies, so they are very fast.

Luke – basics of the Force with Obi Van. Can deflect blaster bolts? Rey – have visions by touching a lightsaber.

Luke – blows up Deathstar using the Force with Obi Van guidance (voice only). He could do it only because Han had a change of heart by the way. Rey - downloads Kylo knowledge. Rey can do a mind-trick now (a weak willed Stormtrooper). Lifts a lightsaber, kicks Kylo *** (Kylo is unbalanced by killing Han and wounded).

Luke – 3 years of war between NH and ESB? I guess he was slaking, since he is able to pull up a lightsaber with considerable effort in life death situation. Rey – basics of the Force with Luke.

Luke – Dagobath master class with Yoda. Still, Luke is shown being unable to lift his ship. Falcon hyperdrive is broken, travel to Cloud City takes no less then a couple of weeks, IIRC. Rey – defeats Luke.

Luke – leaves Dagobath against Yoda warnings. His training is not complete. Looses his duel with Veider. Novelization implies that Veider just toys with him. If not for Luke friends who have been trying to save, he would be dead. Rey – wins every fight. Have she ever needed help?

Luke – at least 1 year of training alone between ESB and RoJ? Rey – she already have everything she needs. By the way, is there anything new she can learn from the books she took?

To be honest I am afraid to imagine, what Rey will be capable of at Luke age.

Even if you consider the Force download and talent, is it not a little bit too easy? By the way, I may be stupid, but was that downloading mentioned somewhere in the film? And what was Yoda saying about the easy and fast way to power?

One more thing, most SW heroes had flaws. What are Rey's?

I suspect that a good rebuttal was as convincing to me as this poor one was for you ;). But this is the price we pay for echo chambers :(.

  8. Well, I didn't mean that as any kind of insult, just that I don't see it. I guess I just see men and women as equals. I see Rey as a poorly written Mary Sue. I don't see her on some pedestal to make men look bad. I honestly wonder where people get that from. Makes me wonder about them and the life experiences they've had to perceive all that. I see a poorly written Mary Sue, bad plots and a cringe-worthy premise. Fan fiction basically. There is real good potential for a great story with Luke and Kylo and Han and the Force and Rey. TFA wasn't all that bad in that regard, but man, they butchered it with TLJ. I like Finn at least. Too bad they wasted all of his character building from the first movie with the second, though.

I do not melt that easy :).

It was my experience with Force Awakens and Last Jedi. Lot's of why. Why Finn have not slapped Rose then she doomed all the Resistance (or is it Rebels). Why Holdo did not admit to Leya that she chosen a wrong moment to teach Poe a lesson about hope and that him gambling the Rebels survival (or is it Resistance) is at least partially due to her own inaction. Why Rey defeated Luke. Why, why, why... So I took a look at what creators of LJ say about critique they received. It was... suprising.

    It all adds up .

    As JennyFlynn said:

I don't mind the occasional plothole and leaving things open to the reader/viewer's interpretation. What I do mind is the way certain agendas are not just being pushed, but shoved down our throats by Kennedy and her band of favorites. What I do mind is established characters being rewritten into someone they never were in order to push said agenda. What I do mind are unnecessary plots just for the sake of pushing an agenda

    Poe and Holdo:

A lot of that, based on what I've seen said in various comments and articles across the web, is mostly to do with Poe and the way Leia and Holdo treat him. People have been 'upset' with Leia chiding and slapping him, and Holdo treating him like an insignificant fly-boy who knows nothing.

I didn't see it that way myself. In my eyes, that was a story of growth for Poe. He was reckless and arrogant, doing first and thinking later, but we see that slowly changing. He becomes someone who does think first, who stops Finn storming out the base on Crait because he realizes Luke is buying them time to escape. Going from reckless 'fly boy' to someone fit to lead the Resistance, which is what Leia was looking for and it's further evidenced when Poe suggests following the crystal foxes and everyone looks at Leia, and she kinda goes "What are you looking at me for? You heard him".

In my eyes Holdo have been arrogant and was thinking too much then it was time to do something. I do find her leading and teaching styles strange. “Hope is like a sun”. What does it have to do with being a good leader? Or having a plan of action? Or trusting others? Or thinking before rushing in? Could she not teach Poe a lesson without pushing desperate people to mutiny?

Or was she silent so Finn and Rose can go to that casino to find the slicer? So Rose can teach Finn some very important lessons, free the animals and "hurt them"? By the way, who will get punished for letting animals escape? Adorable child slaves? Who will clean up all that mess? Other slaves? Who Rose and Finn did hurt? What happened to "thinking about consequences of your actions" Holdo lesson?

    It all adds up .

  9. So you'd think, except;

The writer confirms as much, and basically states he wishes he could have taken it further and made it more obvious.

Wait, L337 is not a brick to the face parody of worst aspects of SJW?! What the... No. No! Please, no!

  10. I already know all about that. BUT, as I said, if Rey had been male and it still would have bothered you that he was so powerful with little to no training and explanation why is the supposed "feminist agenda" an issue? I kind of saw it, but I didn't feel like my face was being rubbed in it. I enjoyed the story for what it was, despite the eye-rolling Mary Sue/Stu issues(which still would have bothered me if Rey had been Roy).

But Mary Sue is a sexist term! :D

Jokes aside, is it not strange that Rey, Holdo and Rose are perfect, always know best, strong, wise, humble and brave... And Luke, Poe and Finn are flawed, constantly make mistakes, weak, stupid, rash and cowardly?

Sara Connor or Ellen Ripley had no need for some man to be worse then them in order to be a complete and utter pure concentrated awesomeness.

  11. New poster here, although I have lurked in this thread for quite some some :p I sort of felt the need to share my love for redeemed Arcann based on some of the recent discussion.

Obviously, we all have slightly different views on Arcann's character (which is great since there wouldn't be much to discuss otherwise!), but as I see him, his behaviour in the romance really makes sense. To me, Arcann always seemed like a love-starved character, even when he was bad. Those cutscenes where you see him brooding on the throne, wishing that Thexan could be there, musing about Senya's lack of understanding for him and his siblings… As powerful, determined and dangerous as he was, he always seemed tormented and deeply lonely. Even after being redeemed, he writes in his first letter that he still struggles to forget Valkorion's coldness which, to me, indicates that the pain of his father's neglect is still very much there. In the "I have you"-letter, it sounds to me like the PC is starting to fill the void of all those losses and lack of love for him.

I also think it's important not to overlook the significance of Arcann comparing the PC to Thexan in that letter, in order to really understand what the PC has come to mean for him. Being a (lost) twin must have some psychological impact on him. When you add to that the gratitude he feel towards the PC, and keep in mind that Arcann always seemed like an obsessive person who felt everything too strongly, it really makes perfect sense to me that he would become a bit too dependent on the PC in the romance! Some of the things he says, like being undone by you and not knowing what to do without you, also indicate to me that he is not all that emotionally stable despite being redeemed, as he might still place a risky amount of importance on one person's affection - which is something I actually like, since I would find it hard to accept if all of his issues were just magically fixed after the Voss ritual.

I don't think he would necssarily return to his former ways if the PC abandoned him (I like to think he's come too far for that), but I do think it would affect him tremendously. Of course, I might just be reading all these things into what is actually very little content, but it's what makes the romance fun and fulfilling for me!

So, all in all, I really like redeemed Arcann. I do wish that more of what I see as his character development could take place during interactions rather than in the letters (I'm thinking of the last letter we got from him specifically, which was the first time he has really expressed his thoughts on the changes in him) - but I understand that there are limited resources for this and so on. And I do agree that it would be nice to see him in action some more, and it would really help to show that he is not suddenly this passive, meek character (I think his combat lines show that this isn't the case, but it's not quite enough). I still think Ii's a huge mistake that we couldn't bring him to the Nathema flashpoint.

I hope that wasn't a wall of text :p But then, this is the right place to write walls of text about Arcann, right? ;)

    Hiiiiiiii! :)

Oh, I do not think that it is strange for Arcann to act in this way. But I would still would like for him to get out of this euphoria of having his affections returned. It is just it my experience it is not possible to build relationship on love high only :o. And maybe, just maybe, I do hope we will get some character development. Not Voss magic to fix the issues, but time and... excuse me, I need to stop before I will slip into hopeless romantic mode and embarrass myself. And development will mean MOAR content :D.

Yes! I loooove delicious wall of texts!

  12. Oh I have no issue at all with what happened with Koth. Even took him back later on. :p

I simply would not wish that companions take decisions that we cannot really foresee. Probably not for my sake only, those few other games taught me well about consequences and I loved all of them. It is not possible to have a consistant character and please everyone. But if we can avoid riots coming from players that would appreciate it less...

    Raaaant time!

I do listen to all the dialog (for the first time) :). And yet I have no idea what to expect. We are so used to companions being always loyal and supporting, that Koth stunt was as a nasty surprise for some players for a reason. It was an interesting move, but BW did not follow through. All that notes about someone being unhappy or outraged at PC methods. All that promises of good and bad actions having consequences. All that railoadong and suspense. The story is full of guns that may fire or not. And guns from nowhere that do fire. :rak_02:

Why only Koth had a realization that supporting DS PC to get rid of Arcann is as smart as trying to save a bunch of small cute fluffy animals from a kingsnake by asking another kingsnake to help? And why only Koth decided to do something before all small cute fluffy animals are eaten? What, other good NPC sleep well at night knowing that they are helping a ruthless psychopathic Commander to get his/her backside on Eternal Throne? Think of all the wobbly noses and little black sad eyes! :(

It is not like BW can not do choices with consequences. Take ME 2 – that one really rewarded you for paying attention :). Who will be a good leader? One option is obvious, second is a red herring (but you will know if you paid attention) and third is not so obvious (but you will know if you paid attention). Who is the best hacker? Two obvious choices. Who will you pick for a task of holding up a biotic shield? Two obvious choices with one red herring. Are everyone focused on a mission or does someones past have been slowing them down? Who will hold the line better then a walking armored tank?

By the way, I think it was a mistake to try to add serious consequences that will happen much later to a game that have no save and load option. Especially that late in the game, then player could get attached to their PC. It have been what... 3 years in my case? I do not want my main Sorceress to be punished or rewarded for “reasons”. Before expansions I knew that consequences for my choices will be reasonable and logical. Even then unexpected. Now? I am not sure... I know there are alternative ways around this particular issue, but with the speed we get new content, it is wiser to drop the sub and return once in a year or two.

“Dramath will remember your cruelty.” Aaaaand?

  13. Agreed! I do think romance options should have an advantage over non romance ones. I also think that goes for old companions that haven't returned yet. Koth does deserve some screen time however, probably more than anyone at this time.

Voss magic will paint smiles on your soul! Whenever you want it or not -_-.

With Arcann there is some hope that his current state it is the result of life shattering events and emotional burn out and that he can rebound and change his attitude to something more healthy.

By the way, BW walk on eggshells here. Strong personalities do clash sooner or later. They did try to have one LI disagree with PC. And look how it ended. Poor Koth. He even did not have a plesaure to flee from his ship while it was blowing up! Or say to Commander – “I bet you wish that bomb was still in place, huh”?

  14. One of my characters romanced Koth and it seems they have forgotten about him because people wanted him dead. Fine for them but what about those that don't or do we not count?

Ah yes, Koth... A story of an idealist who have his perfect leader figure slowly deconstructed? Finding out that his wonderful enlightened society have been built and sustained by the blood and tears of others? And all of this is a “fault” of an Outlander, who potentially can bedazzle and sweep him of his feet? Nothing will ever be the same again... Nah, too complicated! Wait, why so many players hated him? Oh, well. Join the crafting pets stable!

Really, he alone can be used as perfect example for everything what went wrong with expansions. The idea was interesting, but the execution was not so stellar. And then players reception have been cold (I wounder why -_-), instead of getting it together and rebounding, everything have been dropped and swept under the rag.

So, yes. Head-cannon and good fanfiction to the rescue!

  15. Everything related to Zakuul will probably be swept under the rug. It's all Empire vs Republic. Somehow. Some of “it's all your fault” hypocrites may attack the player again, but they will have to go after Commander directly and without the help of Deus ex Machina droid it will be hard.

    Would you sacrifice Arcann? :rak_03:

*Hits Paul over the head with fire-extinguisher.

    Down! Bad Sutherland!

Edit: Hmm, you do have a point about new body for Marr, he was almost dead because of DS overuse... Good thing my Sin put Vaylin body into stasis, unlike the others :D.
