So, having started playing again a few weeks ago and getting my old Raidteam back I tried to figure out a way for all of us to be able to see if we're doing good dps with the gear that we've got. This should hopefully be helpful for all of you who are unsure of yourself and give you a better idea of what to strive for.
So, the formula for it is super simple tho it might seem complicated at first.
What you need is 4 pieces of data. Two of those you'll be able to find here
http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=918622
The data that you're looking for here is your class, total DPS RELEVANT stat points - mastery, power, alacrity and crit (for all dps that's 14248 total points) and average damage done with optimal rotation.
The other two pieces of data you'll have to grab from your toon. Add all your DPS RELEVANT stats together and do a parse.
So, with all this data, this is what you want to do - divide the TOTAL STAT POINTS with AVERAGE PARSE OF THE CLASS and from it you'll get the amount of stat points that you need to do 1 DPS.
Do the same with your own stat points and parse.
This is what that looks like for Guardian Vigilance
MAX STATS --- AVERAGE DPS --- Stat Points Per 1 DPS
14248 / 10027 = 1,42
My Stats ---- AVERAGE DPS --- Stat points per 1 DPS
11041 / 7554 = 1,46
So, how does this help you? This way you can easily calculate how much damage you'd be doing if you were fully geared out and optimized. The math for that is simple AF. You simply divide your classes MAX STAT with MY SPPD (stat points per 1dps) and you get what damage you'd be putting out.
MAX STATS --- MY SPPD --- MAXED OUT DPS
14248/1,46=9,758
Now, what needs to be considered is that a MH does a fair bit of bonus damage that is relevant to your STAT PER DPS and from what I've seen with my Guardian it's 0,04 STAT PER DPS per rank, this is however not concrete and might work different for other classes.
I hope this helps all of you who are not sure what you should be parsing when using lower level gear and help you figure out if you're doing well or need to relearn rotations.
This is also a thread on reddit that I've posted originally, just want to make that clear.
