  1. I'm relatively newer to checking these forums often so apologies if this has already been a thread.

Curious of people's favorite characters from the franchise and trying to grab a running total for my own enlightment :)

    For myself I'll say:

Favorite Dark Side User/Sith - Darth Bane

    " " Light Side User/Jedi - Yoda

" " Non-Force User - Jet Nebula (quite the entertaining & amazingly crafty character from the great read "Fatal Alliance" if haven't read it)

Honorable Mention: Darth Zannah, Darth Malgus, Exar Kun, Karness Muur, Satale Shan

Feel Free to do whatever you want for your own categories, you want to rank characters, or anything you want to do just go for it

  2. Looks like Bane is the winner !

I was behind Exar Kun and Krayt but both people gave good argument and layout for Bane's win !

Thank you for the excellent read !

As I am not as familiar with Krayt, what was your original scenario/argument for his win? Just wondering to gain some extra knowledge and a different viewpoint

  3. Many of the skills are just upgrades to ones that you already have, but I assume that you're not referring to those.

Some of the skills are passive and hence wont show up on the task bar.

For active skills, I've always found them it's just that they may be placed in an odd empty slot on a quick bar or more confusingly some have very similar icons and at first glance they appear to be duplicates of a previously learned skill.

Awesome! Will hunt around the taskbars tonight. Thanks for the info

  4.

Kun was capable of impressive large-scale force rituals, but when it comes to a straight-up duel he would probably rely on his considerable lightsaber skills. The problem is, both Krayt's Vong armor and Bane's orbalisk armor give each of them a considerable advantage in a lightsaber fight, and both are excellent duelists themselves. In a one-on-one fight, Kun may have an opportunity to adapt and start using the sort of force-blasts he used against the sithspawn on Dxun, but in a hectic three-way fight against two aggressive, skilled opponents, I think he'd end up cut down before getting the chance.

After that, it's be a close, and brutal duel - against any lesser opponent Krayt and Bane would be both incredibly fast and strong, but they're close enough in skill that Krayt would be "the fast one" and Bane "the strong one". Krayt and Bane's armors would balance each other out, although I think Bane's is a bit better. The main weakness of Krayt's two-saber style is strong, overpowering strikes - which Bane is all about. On the other hand, if Krayt is able to get a solid lightning blast past Bane's defenses it could still cook Bane in his armor, and Krayt is crafty and adaptable enough that he might just be able to sneak one in.

In the end though, I think the raw aggression in Bane would allow him to simply overbear Krayt and keep hammering, eventually pushing through his defenses - hitting the exposed spots in Krayt's armor and scoring a hard-fought win for the SIth'ari.

I like your analysis and have similar thoughts but some differences. I would like to first mention that I am more familiar with Bane and Kun than Krayt so take my thoughts with that in mind.

While it is true that Bane's armor has a weakness to lightning, Krayt's does as well as that is how he was killed the first time by Wyyrlok. Bane was also very strong in lightning so I feel the armor/lightning combo between the two is dead even and in this case would come down to whoever would get a lucky sneak attack lightning strike in.

As the prompt states that the 3 do not know each other this gives Kun an advantage. The only thing Bane feared was Dark Magic and Kun was one of the best practitioners of all time. If given time to gather his power while defending attacks (as Zannah was able to do in the final duel vs Bane) with the boost from his amulet, I think Kun would win. (If they did know each other, I think Bane would target Kun from the start to rid himself of this threat).

However, and this I feel is the more likely outcome as I don't think Kun would get the aforementioned time, if the fight is strictly upon lightsaber skills, Bane will win. While all 3 are fantastic lightsaber fighters possibly among the top 10 all time from either side of the force, I consider Bane with orbalisk armor to be in the top 3 duelists of all time with Palpatine and Luke. With his orbalisk armor, Bane was able to hold his own and at times overwhelm a duel wielding Jedi Master considered to be one of the best Jedi fighters of all time, another Master, and Knight of whom the duel wielder was using his scrub attacks to her advantage. And, all three of these combatants were fueled by a 3rd Master whose only battle skill was meditation. Given that Bane performed such a feat, I don't believe that any combination of effort of Kun and Krayt against him would be quite enough to defeat him and thus I see Bane winning.

Take note that as I stated I am more familiar with Bane and Kun I see two scenarios with one of them winning and none with Krayt winning.

  5. Indeed, and imo an empire under Plagueis would have been far better, somewhat similar to the Fel Empire centuries later. The justice system would be harsh but fair. There would be no anti-alien bias. Although he would still have probably wiped out the jedi. :p

Actually Naboo is a mid rim world & before the events of the novel it was just a backwater planet that no one had heard of. It did not even have a proper spaceport.

But more importantly Palpatine was able to conceal his powers from even Plagueis who was at the time one of the few people in the galaxy who could tell directly if a person was force sensitive or not (the jedi of the time relied on a blood test).

    From the novel:

Thanks for the info and clarification; been a while since read the book. Also, agree with and liked your thoughts in regards to that Plagueis/Palpatine shared empire. Too bad Palgueis tried to abolish the Rule of Two

  6. I've been on the game for a while but never posted this on here before. Anyone else from time to time buy an ability from the trainer and then not have it show up on your toolbar? Is it just hidden and I've overlooked it? Does not happen often but it's annoying when it does! I've noticed it'll happen (sometimes) when I'm buying an ability for the first time and not when I'm upgrading a previously bought ability.
  7. That wouldn't have exactly worked as the concept of 'difficult childhoods' and 'humble beginnings' tend to be the origins of good characters not bad ones. Because overcoming obstacles are concepts we associate with protagonists, which in turn we associate with heroes. Palpatine is not a hero, and yet he is in a sense a protagonist. So obstacles had to be put in his way, yet these obstacles had to be insidious i.e. obstacles you don't need to overcome but simply want to to achieve more power. E.g. killing your family to release yourself from their restrictions.

In a way, I feel this is one of the minor faults of the Bane trilogy. Bane has a difficult childhood and a lot of the time has to overcome obstacles you would associate with the 'hero' so the whole idea that at Bane is evil is kind of lost. Bane doesn't feel evil to me. But perhaps that's what the reader intended.

On the other hand Palpatine is a egoistical, meglomanical, sociopath - its only makes sense that he was a spoiled, arrogant brat as a child. Neither do you become a Senator by being born into a poor background, unless you get lucky. As senator of Naboo he was bound to come from a wealthy family from the start.

If Palpatine had had the childhood of Darth Bane, he would not have become the character that we see in the movies. I mean, Bane and Palpatine are very different characters, and there upbringing accounts for that.

So yeah, while its nice to have the whole 'hardships' thing going on - that wouldn't have worked for Palpatine as he would not have ended up being the character he tunrs out to be. In the words of Plagueis: 'heartless, ambitious, arrogant, insidious, and without shame or empathy. More, you're a murderer.' He killed his family because he hated them, and they were in the way of his ambitions and desire for power.

Nonetheless I like Plagueis' background better, although I think the whole 'evil child' trope can only be used once and not rinsed and repeated for the next bad guy. However I feel both work very well for the character they are trying to establish. You have to remember that different characters have to have differing childhoods - because they shape their personalities. Sometimes the 'hardships and humble beginnings' card can't be pulled, because it would lead to an entirely different personality.

I see your point in regards to Bane not feeling evil while reading the Bane trilogy. There were a couple times in that trilogy that he does very evil acts (ie, book 1 where he slaughters a father and sons to fuel his push to see Caleb) but in general I agree. Also something to mention is that in the Plagueis novel the only outright evil act in the novel that is not a flashback I can think of that Palpatine does is kill his family as I don't consider killing Plagueis outright evil. Using that same prompt, Plagueis only killed those members of the of that cargo ship in the beginning of whom they were thinking of ransoming him and then hunting down some nobles after they tried to assassinate him. Bane only killed when it served his purpose and notes that he is annoyed with the ruthless ancient Sith whom he considers to be foolish in this regard. Palpatine, and especially Plagueis, honestly believed it was in the best interest of the galaxy to have an authoritarian government in that novel. Most important I think it is to note that in all four of these books, the Sith are whom the plot centers around. If they were ruthless and merciless monsters I don't think the books would be received well. In other EU stories where this is not the case (ie most of them), you see them depicting the Sith differently.

Back to the original prompt. I was not disappointed in general but there was a curious inconsistency I would like to share/get fellow thoughts. In Episode 1, Qui-Gon Jinn says that if Anakin was born in the Republic they would've identified him as a Force user. Palpatine is on a core-world (I think?) in Naboo but was not identified until Plagueis' visit when Palpatine was 17ish. The novel states that humans are harder to read in terms of potential. Thoughts anyone??

  8. Hello, I'm kind of late to the swtor party I suppose but have a question.

I've exhausted Lord Rathari's planet's missions (Nar Sadow I think but not sure and too lazy to check). Would you recommend going to Balamore and doing those missions, getting Quinn, and then coming back to face Rathari or just suck it up, face the locals, and level up the long way. Vette and I (Sith Marauder) are at level 21.

Thanks for any and all replies.
