  1. Sure. I was just pointing out, more to the other poster, that token characters can't do the class story, since he seemed to be suggesting using a token and doing the class story on that character.

Nah, I said I'm saving it for the class I least want to do again. So no love lost there :)

  2. With how powerful companions are right now, every class has an easy time soloing. :D

Maybe I wouldn't go Operative/Scoundrel then because their AoE-skills are pretty limited making clearing packs a bit slower than with other classes, but other than that you can't really go wrong I think. :)

And I agree, for what you (and me in that particular case) want, the token is nothing but good news. ;)

  3. I would argue that every class has at least one spec that isn't too difficult for beginners or returning players. They're not necessarily the "best", but they play smoothly without needing too much management.

So I would just play what appeals to you most, and then ask what would be the most starter-friendly spec for that specific class.

I still have my boost, I'm gonna save it for the character story I least want to do over again (read: when I want to make another consular) :p

  4. In theory I agree, but in a game like SWTOR, a melee fighting class like Sentinels and Marauders needs tools that make them more forgiving to play - since even ranged classes have a good amount of defensive utility. So a versatile disengage/reengage tool like FC is needed to make the class enjoyable in a PvP setting.

So in practice, I think FC does what it needs to do really well. Making changing it based on your reasons (which I understand) undesirable.

  5. What Mara/Sents lack in ranged utility and arguably inferior CC compared to ***/Shads, they make up for in survivability - mostly active (cooldowns), slightly passive (higher armor class, more +damage mitigation % in specs).

One is more forgiving in one way, the other in another. How it should be ideally I think.

  6. Option #3 is what a lot of people are going with right now for unranked. Jugg is the popular choice for this. Not a lot of PTs running around right now, let alone PT tanks.

I've been curious about this - the PT/VG line looks disappointing for dps/bruiser repurposing opposed to Juggs and Shadows' tank lines. However on second glance I think you could make it into a decent frontline with sustained AREA damage. Single target wise it will lose out to the other two, but it has tools like Pulse Engine + Ion Storm, Energy Blast, Ion Cell being spread by HIB as well as quite a few increases to Explosive Surge. Enough actually that combined with the +25% utility, it could easily replace Ion Pulse as your spammable even in ST-combat (even moreso if you consider it ignores Armour).

I haven't tried this out but it could be worth checking, even for novelty value alone. :D

EDIT: I'd run a offensive/defensive mix though (teclado's option #2). Since the point would be to dive into as many people as you can and slowly melt them down, softening them up for your teammates to kill while absorbing blows they can't take. Offensive bruiser is better done by Juggs and Shadows since they have more ST-burst. :)

  7. Hello community,

Long ago I had the idea to film a match of PvP on all my alts when they turned 49. I haven't exactly stuck to it as I've taken a break from the game, though I'm going to check it out again soon what with the expansion and all.

I had finished footage of 4 of the 6 alts (I already had a 50 Operative and Assassin) though, and it seemed a waste not to use it so I've decided to bring out the series anyway, albeit incomplete. None of my characters were twinked out: no augments and only a couple purple items tops. To clarify this: their max health pools ranged from 13.250 to close to 14.000.

My Commando and Sentinel are both still in their 40'ies, but I have finished off my Jugg, PT, GS and Sage.

The purpose of the thread is both to show off the vids, and to ask advice from veteran players. While I do think I performed quite well on all of them, I do not claim to have mastered any of the classes fully, as I have not yet played them extensively in 50 PvP, nor did I play any of them uninterruptedly. Furthermore, I do realize some of my build choices are unorthodox. While I would appreciate advice on the builds, they have to be within the boundaries of what I'm trying to achieve. I'm not looking for "Don't spec Telekinetics on Sage", but rather "don't spend points in talent A".

With that out of the way, here are the videos I DID finish:

    Gunslinger:

    Build: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#700oZrI00RMbZhrbkrMhd.2

With the final point going into Speedy Shots.

Personal notes: I felt like I couldn't do a lot wrong on this class. She felt really powerful as of lvl 10 in PvP and I have been breaking the 300k mark all the time (I've even broken 400k once on an old lvl 28 sniper of mine). Immunity to interrupts gave her an advantage against rangeds and leaping/pulling immunity against melees. Her damage felt really powerful, much more than the operative. The only class that outdamaged her was my commando, but I blame that on sub-50ies not always being as good.

    Juggernaut:

    Part 1:

    Part 2:

    Build: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#101RrZforRMuddGoZM.2

With the final point going into Accuracy.

Personal notes: This felt, by far, to be the hardest class. It is I think, the only one who has never broken 300k sub-50. Her damage dealt was decent enough, not far behind the others, but she was by far the most vulnerable:

    - pretty much pure melee

    - above average mitigation, but not godlike

    - the fewest escape options of all short range characters

The last one Powertech being an exception, but she has more ranged options, higher speed and all around more destructive powers.

This may be remedied somewhat in 50 PvP with the friendly leap increasing her mobility and escape options. I certainly hope so because she was my favourite character other than my main (my operative).

The video is in two parts because the match was over 16 minutes.

    Powertech:

    Build: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#301G0hzZMsMrRMfkds.2

With the final point going into Rebraced Armor.

Personal notes: easily the most destuctive force I've played in low lvl PvP. While she did not deal the same damage as my Gunslinger or Commando, and had only little AoE, she was incredibly powerful because of her quick burst potential, her great sustained damage and her incredible mobility. Especially huttball was great fun, to run around on all the ramps, wreaking havoc and spewing out fire. If I had been Pyro up to 50, I guess I would have done even better, but I found AP way cooler.

    Sage:

    Build: http://www.torhead.com/skill-calc#600hZMsrMdRrhtzZcM.2

With the final point gonig either into Inner Strength or Critical Kinesis.

Personal notes: squishiest and the weakest of all ranged characters I've played, BUT with the highest mobility and the greatest defensive utility. Those shields turned out to be a real saving grace for the class, allowing her to, even full Telekinetics, go for a decent damage/healing hybrid playstyle. I didn't feel underpowered playing her (though certainly not overpowered either).

Thanks for reading/watching and have a nice play. :)

  8. For Imps I'd say:

    Warrior: Broonmark

    Inquisitor: Andronikos

    Bounty Hunter: Skadge

    Agent: Vector

I significantly doubt Andronikos. Lots of assassins who want a dps companion who is darkly aligned will use him.

Skadge and BM are true, but that's partly because they're acquired late in game. They're both darkside tanks who get sick affection rewards in conversations, so people who can use it should consider using them.

    For Reps:

Knight: Sgt Rusk, darkside companion (not popular with Knights) who is acquired at pretty much the same time as Lord Scourge, who is lots cooler.

Consular: Iresso. Who finds this guy interesting anyway?

Smuggler: A hard one. I'd say Akaavi the least, but that's merely a guess.

Trooper: Yuun or Tanno. (Yuun because he's both lategame and melee dps (and because he's so easy to sway with gifts), Tanno because he's DS, and apparently people don't realize just yet how bad *** he actually is).

  9. It was fun, but I did notice the BH's had a couple of redundant specs (like Pyro Mercs and AP PT's).

In this kind of set-up, it may have been better to go with something like

    2-3 Healing Mercs

    3-4 Pyro PTs

    1-2 Tank PTs

However I do think you'd still have won. :D Go Dps Sorcs!

  10. Recklessness : 2 autocrit/90 sec

    Smashmonkeys : 1 autocrit/10 sec.

Yah not exactly the same ratio eh?

Also maul is your big hitter, and is not affected by recklessness, that limits itself to force abilities.

    Don't dump that crit imo.

Well, with PvP gear it becomes 3 autocrits/75 sec (I think).

It's not as gamechanging as Smash, but it is quite an effective burst rotation.

I don't run it, but I know people who do.

  11. What kind of scoundrel are you? I am asking because, smash being AE, you may not have been the primary target of the attack much of the time. If you're not a marked primary target, you may be missing out on some hard hits by virtue of them being single-target only.

That said, I'm a fairly experienced jugg tank and I decided to try out the smash dps for laughs over the weekend and what I saw was quite impressive (especially since for a minor damage reduction, I _could_ have run in Soresu and guarded a healer.) So I am... not disagreeing with you.

I agree, both on the fact that this twists the numbers somewhat, and on the fact that it's still OP. :D

    pull

dont insult me, ive done my share of warzones.

    i know what i saw.

    i know who was around.

it was a sniper.... he targeted me, and used a pull mechanic which hurled me off ledge toward him.. it had a mechanical sound like a vangaurds pull

so no there was no assasin, or jugg

While I do think you honestly believe that you're sure about everything, you cannot be surprised others are skeptical when the two things considered are your empirical proof (where a lot of different things may have caused an experience like you just had) on one side and the in game rules and mechanics on the other side.

However, there is no evidence to the contrary either, so it's entirely possible that you're correct. I for one would need tangible proof before believing it though.

  12. I'm just gonna add which ones I'd like to see next for every class.

Knight: Either Doc or Lord Scourge. Doc is one of the funniest characters in the game while not even fully intended as a Comic Relief kind of companion. The fact that I'm a girl Jedi (and a DS one with little regard to jedi scrupules) of course makes him extra enjoyable. Scourge is definately one of the most interesting characters. I like his cold, calculated, psychotic and manipulative personality without being on a constant bloodrush. (the type of sith I started referring to as the Gentleman Sith)

Knight NOTs: Droid (didn't remember the exact name). Most annoying companion in the game.

Consular: Class really got the short straw companionwise. I only really like Tharan. He's a total whiner and I like it. He's probably the companion most similar to me in the entire game. And Holiday's b-adas-s too (in a not so b-adas-s way). Both are incredibly annoying companions, but the type I like to be annoyed by. Qyzen's somewhat decent, but I don't tend to like non humanoids, with a few notable exceptions.

Consular NOTs: Nadia and Iresso. First one's boring, the latter, I hardly even remember he's there - and he's my romance option. :/

Trooper: Has the best team on Rep side. I like them all. First of all, I play the corrupt, violent mercenary who just happens to still be great at his job - and he knows it. Elara is hilarious to me. She's an intelligent, ethical, attractive, talented young woman who should really despise me - but she still wants me. :D Aric's great, but he's already been done. 4X is the SINGLE MOST HILARIOUS companion in the game. I've used him for leveling a while, and the remarks he made during class quest conversations are terrific. Especially when I made another dark side choice, and he interprets it in the most heroic way possible. (that first scene on Tatooine, dark side males who had him out at the time know what I'm talking about). But Tanno is still my favourite. Probably because he's the ideal partner in crime for my guy. I also found him to be more charismatic than I though he would be.

Trooper NOTs: Well, my least favourite is Yuun, but actually I still like him. So no NOTs here.

Smuggler: Corso, Risha or Guss. Probably Risha in the end. Corso's mainly great if you're female, otherwise he's probably a bit bland. Risha is definately one of the more interesting ones. She isn't a pure charicature, but she's not a weak girl like Temple or Nadia. She's got the good smuggler streetsmart vibe going. Guss is comic relief, but mostly good at it. (and he's the Heavy from TF2 :o)

    Smuggler NOTs: Bowdaar. Snore.

Sith Warrior: Great crew. Vette's the best, but has already been done. I'm one of the Quinn fans. He's truly fun, especially if you romance him. (you get to be all agressive over him and make him feel uncomfortable). I'm also dying to read his "Life on the Fury" bit. Lt. Pierce, even though I'm light side, I found very likeable. Also a surprisingly well written companion story, which is a bit unusual for companions you get after lvl 30.

Warrior NOTs: Broonmark. What a let down. LS Jaesa is a bit boring at times, but I felt she did contribute to my own story quite well.

Inquisitor: Andronikos or mr. T. Drellik. Andronikos and my guy really had this sort of twisted friendship going. He's quite cool and just violent enough. T Drellik is great. And you can tell me whatever you want, but he sure is flamboyant. :D It's the sort of companion that's great fun to be dealing with.

Inqui NOTs: Khem. He's just lacking personality. His story wasn't interesting to me either. The only moments I liked him were the ones where he

    "gained" some personality

    .

BH: Gault's the only one I really liked. The kind of smooth talking, backstabbing personality that gets me going. Blizz is cute.

BH NOTs: Torian is very like Iresso. Well, he's got the Mandalorian thing going, but he's too much of a baby to make it work. Other than that, he's got nothing to him.

Agent: Great crew. Kaliyo is THE BEST COMPANION EVARR, and I'm happy she was number one in the series. :) Vector, SCORPIO and Lokin are all great too. Though the Iron Lady has a disappointing story. I mean, it's okay, but it should have been MORE.

Agent NOTs: Temple. I honestly don't get why people like her (when they have Kaliyo to like instead). She's one of the prettiest companions, sure, but she's also a bland girl without any personality of her own (the type of guys who like her are way too much into gender based stereotypes imo - just kidding, bros). People say her accent is sexy, which is true, but her voice is too shrill to make it work. Elara's much better at it.

  13. I don't really get the PT hatred if I'm perfectly honest. I mean yeah in regs you can pretty much rape the entire team with delicious burst damage, and lets face it PT 3sec burst is the best in the game in any context.

However... We are easily on of the squishiest classes in the game and if you overextend against a good team you will die. This was a lesson that I had to learn the hard way on my PT coming from a sent who can facetank like a champ and has an excellent escape as well as a parry shield. The fact of the matter is that PT's at full damage potential are pretty ridiculous but against a good team they will never reach that potential due to the danger of overextending. Even if you play PT perfectly you'll die quite a bit, as we are almost always first focus target. Perhaps I'm being dense but I think PTs are perfectly in the context of ranked.

    Just my 2 cents.

    PS: Kolto Overload is OP

While I think OP is too harsh to put it, you still are undeniably among the top of the dps food chain. You are correct that you are the squishiest class. This does mean that coordinated effort at the opposing side poses a real threat to you. However, you are forgetting that means that you are also a class that gains great benefit from allied coordination, where your team's support can easily make up for your own lack of defensive cooldowns (if you played the game, think of Bright Wizards and Slayers in WAR). So it balances each other out. Also, yes, you are a priority target, but so are healing ops, sorcs and smashers.

You are quite well balanced in terms of ranked PvP, but that is ignoring the fact that at least half the specs in the game are not repesented there due to not being as good.

  14. If they ever did that, I WOULD like to see you being able to pick different options.

However, you shouldn't be able to gain anything from them (or anything), except perhaps creds. No companion affection, no DS/LS points, no quest rewards, no commendations... It should just be for fun.

  15. whenever i get in a good faceroll match, imps still call me a smashmonkey in /say, even though i'm a guardian. I really don't think people are complaining solely about juggers, but the name "sweep" just doesn't have the same ring to it, so all focus/rage guard/juggs are labeled smashers.

If it was Sweepmonkeys, this should be their theme song. :D

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyzrKJAu9Rk

  16. More imperials playing than Republics playing, hence more of them use the imperial "versions" when discussing things.

True. I play all 8 "basic classes", but when referring to a "class" in the neutral sense I pretty much always use the imp one, even if I play the rep version.

This is of course totally irrelevant to class balancing issues, as this is a game with perfect mirrors.

  17. In this case it is not a good game design I think. Instafun classes vs. longfrustration classes...

I really like this game, but I partly agree with you here. Devs have made some weird choices. My first character was a dps operative, and they don't get their stealth opener till lvl 36 (I think). Why? I don't think anybody knows. And there are more of these, this is just the most blatant one (to me).
