  1. i think its time this thread gets deleted and we wave goodbye to our old friend ability delay.

Eight years from now when playing the next big mmo that also has issues on release...

"I remember when there was this problem called ability delay. It almost wrecked the game."

"No wai... TOR was always smooth, like a greased fat man riding a crazy carpet down a water slide of lard."

Ok maybe not, but it's possible!

  2. Correct and then after further analysis changed my opinion... this doesn't really have anything to do with the overall issue... once again, you're about 3 threads behind...

Edit: You can keep going on about "my 15 minutes of fame" but thats really not relevant for me as long as this game is fixed... in any case, you're starting to be a bit of my very own fanboy... I appreciate it.

15 minutes of fame or not, you have done a lot of good work for the future of this game. Also, Bioware does seem to be holding true to their promises, which is good to see.

The ability delay seems way better for me tonight. I am very pleased. Not 100%, there is still several problems, but they sort of ninja fixed this today. I did not expect this until at least 1.1.1 or even the march update, if even.

  3. I'm imperial, so I realize we tend to have more people, but I am on the Shadow Hand server right now, it is definitely not prime time (more like almost the exact opposite), and there is 49 people on Alderaan.

Shadow Hand is listed as being "Standard" population right now.

Population imbalance is certainly an issue though on many servers. But hey, it feels just like my server on WoW (Thrall) which had 3 or 4 times as many horde as ally.

  4. Why are people using the speeder example?

Group A doesnt have ability delay

Group B does have ability delay

Groups A and B BOTH have the speeder issue.

Doesnt sound like the speeder is a good example of anything.

The speeder issue is a good example of animations being tied to cast timers and not being able to move on without completing the animation... an issue which was in no way addressed in this patch as per the patch notes.

  5. Actually, after what Jedi characters do in this game, it makes us better than them. Mace Windu was defeated by the first Sith Lord he ever meets. My Jedi Knight has defeated more than a dozen and they aren't the most difficult fights he faces every week.

This game takes place in a time when anyone who is force sensitive at all whatsoever can become either a Jedi or a Sith. The lore is everywhere in game to that effect. So, the sith and jedi are powerful, but many of them are not all that great. You rise to the ranks of the elite via your class story, but many npc sith and jedi are not exactly on the all star lineup.

  6. Did the OP just troll us?

And have half the people just been hit with a placebo effect?

No, there is some real changes here that actually help depending on what part of the delays/lag has been affecting you the most. But, the ability delay is complex, and there are still issues at hand to be fixed. They have more fixes lined up for patch 1.1.1.

  7. the mount dismount thing still happens...

As it should, since that is not what the patch fixed (mount issue is not ability delay from button press, but rather animations being tied to cast timers... different issue). Not sure what OP was thinking there.

  8. Well I wasn't exactly going by scientific testing. Thats just what it feels like to me. Maybe its the fact that because I'm dismounted I have to cast the entire thing over again, then wait again that its screwing up the feeling of how long it takes. Or maybe I'm just used to being able to move as soon as the mount is cast.

Time in these games feels different. In pvp, for example, 1 second can literally change everything, and many things can happen in that 1 second. People who are sensitive to the "hyper time" of action gaming are going to notice delays more clearly and feel that delays are a lot longer than they really are.

  9. I guess I'm just lucky and haven't had the mount or de-mount bug.

Most people wouldn't notice it because unless you are used to pressing move the instant your cast bar is complete (a learned behavior from years of trying to catch people in wow pvp) then it won't really happen. Most of the time it doesn't happen to me, and that is how I am used to playing.

  10. Sure as hell seems like 4 or 5 seconds to me..

I agree with like 99% of what you have said in this thread (been reading your posts). I thought I would mention though that there is no way it is 4 to 5 seconds after the cast bar is complete. That is a long *** time in game, count the seconds out, 1 mississippi, 2 mississippi, 3 mississippi, 4 mississippi... that is way longer than the delay actually is after the cast bar is done ;)

  11. There was a delay in the game?

On a serious note... It's amazing how people don't understand that if you moving while casting your mount.. you are interrupting the cast bar...it's not instant. This has happened in ever MMO I have ever played. Instant mounting would be cool though.

I also find it funny that people are so intent to prove that there is a problem with mounting that they say.. **** ITS BROKE... IF I HIT MOVE JUST AT THE RIGHT TIME I GET DISMOUNTED>> OFMG BW U SUCK GAM BROKED ***..

The problem with the dismounting issue is not moving during the cast bar (duh?), it's that you can't move until the animation has completed after the cast bar has already completed. The animation is pretty quick though, so not everyone notices it, but the problem is there.

Now, it should be mentioned that this patch did nothing to address that issue at all whatsoever (and they did not claim it would). This patch was designed to address the delay between pressing a button and the associated skill firing correctly.

  12. funny to see how easy it is to get people going :)

But sure im glad a lot of you are happy with this update funny thing is a lot of you have no clue what the problem is at hand.

The problem of ability delay is very complex, and this patch was not designed to fix all of that problem. However, the issues many of the common users are noticing most often was addressed in this patch, so that is a good thing. There is still more work to be done for the entire problem to be fixed, especially for the more advanced users.

  13. at least it didn't take 2sec to go in cover like before.

However, I want to see what happens after :

    - 1-2 hours of playing (this is where things starts to go bad)

    - peak hours

    - crowded areas (ilum)

The patch claims it was designed to address the issue in the very situations you describe. We can only hope it does make a decent difference. I don't expect instant 100% (would be nice), but if they are heading the right way, I am happy.

  14. Delay is not gone, tested it in pvp.

Response time when clicking stuff, objects included, is better but not 100% fixed.

    But they introduced new bugs:

sound and animation skip. often there is a castbar without any kind of animation or sound.

damn 2-days-tested patches. go and learn from blizzard.

The didn't say all the delay was fixed, they said it was significantly improved. They also said nothing about animation related issues, which is another part.

Introducing new bugs is unfortunate, but at least they are usually quick to release addendum patches to correct those. They don't exactly have the time frame that Blizzard has right now with WoW to test, as TOR is newer and many of the problems are quite urgent if they want to keep players.

  15. No, i am sure they will but it will blur the results as the focus of the poll is to see if those that had issues with it prior to the update noticed a change.

If i had made a poll about the a coffe machine. And let's say that 70% of the bought products weren't working properly. The company take back all the 70% defective coffe machines to work on the issue.

Two months later the coffe machine that had problems are sent back to their owners. So i decide to make a poll to see if those 70% affected with the issue are happy with it. You are basicly asking me why i haven't added an option "i am one of the customers that was lucky enough to have a working product from the start"

Two reason why this is pointless :

    - This will affect the % of the other answers that are relevant

    - The % of votes stating that they had a working product from the begining will not even reflect the number of consummers that had a working product as the other responses will false the numbers.

Again, this was my polls question " Did you notice a change with the ability delays?". If you never had the issue, good fot you, but you are vote is not going to add anything to the picture.

This isn't to say that i am not interested in those like that that never had ability delays, so maybe i'll do an other poll to check that.

I think all he was saying is people who never had the issue might simply vote that they noticed no change, which will make it look like for them the patch was a failure at fixing the issue.

This is a non-issue though imo, as why do we really care that much? ;)

  16. You're assuming that people that did not have the delay problem prior, will not vote on your poll. Thats giving people way too much credit.

I would guess you are probably right, and people who did not have the issue before, and still do not notice the issue, would probably vote that the patch changed nothing if for some reason they chose to vote. Could skew the results.

  17. but the op in this post said that they are all fixed including the mount issue. Also on my Sorc the heal spell still has like a 0.5 sec lag before u see the text show up cast the heal move forward real fast then u see the animation finish and the SCT show. This is why i think it is also the animation that is part of the problem they need to make it so the stuff fire no later then mid animation and if move/use another spell the animation cancels and blends into the new spell animation.

They didn't fix the animation issues yet. I think this patch helped, but there is more work to be done. Step in the right direction.

  18. Nothing changed for me.

    - Still when I mount up and press to move forward directly after the casting bar finished, I dismount (easy character response test)...

    - There is still a .2-.5 sec delay between skill going off and pressing button, you can feel it...

    - Still abilities don't go off when I press the buttons in fight. Obviously due to Animations blocking other abilities from being used...

My only question here is, when you say there is still a .2 to .5 second delay from pressing the button to when the skill goes off, are you talking about the real ability delay issue (which is a real and important issue), or are you noticing the skill queue, which I think is set to .5 second by default unless you change it?

If you have the queue on, and you press the button before the global cooldown is done, you would certainly notice a small delay before the ability fires. Can you clarify your test to be sure?

I am actually interested in the issue. Thanks.

  19. Translation: I have low standards and believe that since other companies screw up, that makes it OK for Bioware to screw up too.

Low standards, possibly. Expecting too much, maybe. In the end, mmo's are notoriously complex and I am just pleased to see that Bioware is fixing some of the issues, and I hope to see them continue to do so.

An mmo is not like a single player game that has to be nigh on perfect on release because most people buy it and beat it the first week. I'm not saying an mmo should not be nigh on perfect if possible, it's just that in the real world, mmo's are a bit of a trickier pig to skew.

  20. Really dont get why so many are complaining about some ****** speeder....seriously.....a bug like that is utterly meaningless compared to the ability delay in warzones that made it COMPLETELY unplayable. 2-3 sec delays on 60 ms and 30-60 fps, felt like a 1000 ms.

You had to wait half a second after casting to actually be able to move without unmounting yourself? buhuuu. Sooo much lower on the priority list that its somewhere down in the sewer.

If they actually fixed the warzone ability delays im gonna be one happy camper. (camper as in the expression, not the corpse camper)

I think people are just using the speeder delay issue, for the most part, as an easily testable and measurable indicator of the overall delays still experienced. I think the speeder delay issue is related to some of the delays you see in combat. What we all really care about is warzone and combat in general ability delay.

  21. As soon as I get off work I'm going to rush home and test this.

    VERY EXCITED.

If they really fixed it so you can mount up on your speeder and start moving as soon as the cast bar is done, I'm going to be so, so, so very happy. :D:D:D

You can still trigger the mount issue, but it seems to be much more tuned now. As in, the delay before you can start moving is much shorter (I found I personally did not trigger the issue anymore unless I tried). A step in the right direction I think.

  22. I still see the issue after logging on... the mount thing is the easiest to test....

What I will say, is that it 'seems' or does feel like in some cases the pre-cast delay as Allocator diagramed it seems to have improved. But again I'll wait till more data has been gathered, but at least it seems to feel a bit better.

Allocator (Thread 4, Page 36) Diagram of Ability Delay Problem: http://i.imgur.com/oGeam.png

However, the larger issue of the execute animation and the damage being applied only after the animation is still there. So there are still no 'real' instant cast spells in this game. All spells have a cast time... and maybe the 'instant' cast spells can essentially just be cast while moving in some cases.

I noticed the mount problem still is there, but it is much harder to trigger. You have to move closer to the end of the cast bar, as before the delay before you could move was much longer. I have to work at it to get it to happen now.

As for instant spells having a cast time... I agree with this, they technically do. It's a different design philosophy as opposed to WoW that doesn't care what it looks like, it just applies the damage first, and plays the animation as a second. If Bioware wants to tie animations with the numbers game, that is fine (it certainly looks good), it just adds another layer of balancing as they have to ensure all animations are tweaked and tuned properly.

I don't think they fixed the issue completely yet, but they have begun the process of alleviating some of the strains today as already there is a noticeable benefit here to the "feeling" of combat being fluid. I am pleased they are trying.

  23. This is false and I hope does not confuse those not up to speed... I don't have the energy to go into great lengths and detail to explain this to you. The statement that WoW at any point in time was not responsive in combat is simply wrong and claiming anything like this is a blatant lie.

    inb4 getting stuck looting...

    /agree.

Also, lol, stuck looting was epic sometimes. You could slide across the whole zone with your character in a crouched position, but that meant you never did get the loot. Sometimes I just gave up on trying to loot certain corpses because it just would not work. This problem persisted for a crazy long time too.

I should note I don't think stuck looting bug was related to any kind of delay or even lag because you could still engage in combat or whatever fine when it was happening, as could others around you. It was just a really annoying/funny bug.

  24. People love viewing WoW through rose-tinted glasses. They forget just how poorly that game played for the first 3 years compared to how it plays now. The lag and 'ability delay' in that game were horrible at first. Contrary to popular belief, you did NOT have the responsiveness you have today.

I'm not defending the current issue in TOR. Rather, just trying to debunk the myth that WoW's responsiveness has been smooth since it's launch.

Actually, and I am not looking at WoW with rose tinted glasses because I would rather poke my eye with a sharp pointy stick than play it for one more minute, but combat has always been very smooth in WoW (smoother than TOR) when the servers were working... that is... lag aside.

Lag, as you mentioned, used to be terrible in WoW... I mean, the game was almost unplayable many times each night due to massive lag spikes that lasted for 10 minutes at a time. I recall even without a lag spike my latency being 10 thousand milliseconds sometimes and entire sides of Azeroth would feel it (usually Kaladim or the Eastern kingdoms would have the problem, but both were not affected at the same time)... do you know how much of a delay that is when you press a button and it happens 10 seconds later... it's nuts. I'm speaking more about Vanilla, things did get a lot better in BC lag wise. I'm not kidding when I say lag used to be bad... the running joke for the first year of the game was that the servers were held together by rubber bands and gerbils.

I'm not defending WoW, but WoW's only real ability delay was lag. No lag meant smooth combat (although no lag was rare in Vanilla).
