Dark Age of Camelot had the best player vs player style of gaming out of any MMORPG I have seen. I couldnt wait to port into their Open World RvR area. The land was vast, and during DAOC's golden years, the battles were plenty. I loved the 8 person groups. It added to the strategy and teamwork needed to survive in the Frontiers. There were real objectives in their pvp that directly benefitted the whole realms if they successfully captured their opponents Relics. When a Relic was in danger of being taken, Whole server populations would stop what they were doing to defend their Realm. Mythic did a great job in keeping their pvp fun and important. Plus, All players were ranked via player, realm, class and server.
Sadly, WOW came along and took a large chunk of Dark Age of Camelot player community. Before you knew it, the player base plummeted. But no matter what game forum you browse, one thing is for certain, the general consensus for most mmorpg gamers is that DAOC pvp was the most fun and long lasting. That is why I cannot understand why new MMORPGs, like SWTOR, do not mimic that type of PVP gaming. Pvp in SWTOR is not very fun. It is a typical grindfest for gear, just like most other games out there. And, that gets old quickly.
The player housing was done very well too. Mythic's idea of instanced housing "areas" was a fine idea. The homes were very detailed. Players had the opportunity of adding Trophies of their kills to their walls as decorations. The homes fit the different Realm styles. Gamers had a wealth of choices in furniture and upgrades to customize their homes. They offered Guild Homes, where players could go and meet face to face with each other. It was a great social aspect of the game. It is a shame that a game with such innovative and creatively successful ideas, did not stay successful.
