I quite liked Qyzen but I ended up using Tharan, then Iresso, then now Nadia's my main companion. He's definitely a good companion, just personal preference led me to wander.

Is the Consular storyline as boring as I've heard?

I levelled a sage to 50 and enjoyed to storyline, but have to agree with some other posters that it is a bit of a slow start story-wise. I enjoyed the third act a lot, and when I got to the end I simply wished that it had gotten interesting a bit earlier. -
Wait til you're 50 and have all of your skills available! You will need to use all four hotbars. To be honest the only thing I use on my companion tree is "Attack" which I have mapped to T. Need most of the quickslots for consular abilities.
