Have the companion summoned when you enter an operations area and you get credit for the kills within the operation. Alternatively, go to a starter world where you can one shot everything and there are quick respawn timers (I like ord mantell starter zone for republic side).

Showed up at our scheduled time and date and I was the only one there -
I'm having the same problem on my Commando. In game my gear is colored deep red and black but at the character select screen it is white/grey.

Had a great run the other night and got a bunch of gear for my toons. Definitely recommend them.
