Personally I had no reall expectations , Had my friends not decided to play i'd be in vanguard still.
However I do like the game , but No didnt live up to the hype. Has any game?
Should it live up to the hype?
The hype mostly exists in your head as opposed to something tangible that exists for itself in the real world. I dont recall the hype including an explicit set of features that were'nt included at launch . Correct me if im wrong on this.
So the discussion becomes incoherent.
I was expecting a Star Wars themed MMO and I got it.
Hype I think is synonymous to Advertising , which used to be called Public Relations after its name was changed from the much stigmatized , " Propaganda"
Hype , or Advertising is by it's very nature an attempt at coercion
I was expecting the game the developers promised. Silly me.

omg, at 2:46 Stephen Reid actually says that the Bioware team works 24/7 to solve all the problems as they arise.
No. You don't. Because exploits have been going on for weeks.

They said that endgame combat wasn't going to revolve around a bunch of players beating on one giant mob. Umm... no check.
They said they knew the difference between sandbox and theme park and that they were going to find a happy medium between the two. NO CHECK. This is the most linear game ever.
They said the game wasn't overly instanced. Umm... other than Guild Wars this is the most instanced game ever.
They bragged about the billions of different customization options, totally obfuscating the fact that, in reality, your options are two genders, each with 4 human bodies with human faces, and different skin colors and hair styles.
They advertised how the consequences of your decisions were going to totally make this better than a SPRPG because there was no save button. Then they waffled and put in light-side / dark-side markers and the ability to escape-out and re-do any conversation if you don't like the outcome.
They said there were "huge open worlds that go on and on..." making it sound like the terrain was open rather than designed like a maze to hand-hold you from quest hub to quest hub.
They said being a "grey" player would be just as viable as being full light or full dark.
They said a lot of things that were either false or deceptive or got changed later.
Exactly.

That is not entirely correct.
I dont care to elaborate because of NDA and confidentiality laws.
I Know what you're talking about .

Actually no, the OP isn't. One of the BW writers , Jennifer Hepler or whatever said that should be an option in MMOs or something to that extent.
Yeah that's what made me think of it. Why doesn't Bioware include the option to skip it's fluff if you can skip the only reason to play a Bioware game?

Wait... What? Are you kidding me? Bioware is fixing problems?
-
So you could just spacebar through all the combat instead of the story? Then you could just play your personal quest and get it done that way instead of all the bloated filler between class stories?
-
What promises are you referring to? What was promised that wasn't delivered?
A world pvp system that is going to blow my mind. Fluid combat. And replayability.
-
I this depends on what the hype exactly was.
I believe they made their promise on delivering quality story with top-notch voice acting. You can craft your own story with responses you choose.
That was the signature innovation this game brought to the MMO market and they delivered on that 100%.
The rest of the game was as hyped as any MMO. There's PvP, there's endgame, etc.
Huttball is terrific but aside from that the PvP isn't revolutionary by any means. Did they say it would be?
Multiplayer dialogue is new and interesting and delivers as far as hype goes. But the rest of the experience is up to the player to determine whether it delivers on hype or not.
The story argument dies when you level another toon to 50, then you realize how fail that story thing was.
-
i think the question should be can SWToR deliver on the hype in a time frame acceptable to generation ADHD.
It already failed at that. It made too many promises, then took too long to deliver on them.
-
you think this game was hyped to hell look at GW2
the response to any argument on any gaming forum regardless of the actual game being an MMO or not is
"GW2 can't come out soon enough"
like its the second coming of jesus or something.
GW2 is actually the second coming of Jesus. In fact it's God descending from the heavens to apologize to the world for what WOW did to the genre.
In fact after the press beta this weekend, the entire gaming news industry is saying that GW2 delivers on the promises SWTOR broke for innovation, and mmo evolution.
SWTOR is a 100% failure for me as an MMO, and it's another in the line after Rift of trying to ride the coat-tails of Blizzard and failing miserably at it.
WOW is still better than SWTOR, and still better than RIFT. I'm just burnt out on WOW and WOW clones.
And before "why are you still here?" My account is cancelled.

Bioware doesn't have the current hero engine, they bought a prototype of the hero engine, and then had to develop the rest of it themselves.
This is coming from the guy who created the hero engine. Most of the problems with the hero engine, are because of Bioware's programmers, not the hero engine.

how early can I solo esseless
I'd say about level 16ish you could do it depending on your gear, your companions gear, and your skill level.
-
I was just wondering, is it possible to go full 10,000 dark side, then change my way and go 10,000 light side?
So basically have 10,000 darkside then go 10,000 light side and still have the dark side points?
I'm sure it is, light side / dark side is nothing more than a faction grind. You can get exalted dark side, then grind and get exalted light side.
-
You know why Swtor is always going to seem lackluster and the environments horrible?
That's how a city is supposed to be. That's what a living world looks like. And that's just a city.
SWTOR got really lazy with their environment. They did some barely passable worlds, then barely populated them with any life whatsoever.
Bioware dropped the ball.

So you have finally solo'd your way to 50, because its hard to find groups in this game.
You've done so without any advice or anyone helping you figure out how to build your character or what gear to put on it.
Now, you're just excited to finally be able to get a group because you made it to 50. Awesome you think to yourself!
But really, you need to spend another month grinding dailies on Belsavis until those same people who refused to group with you on the way up will even consider grouping with you now. Oh, yeah, go do it by yourself. What do you think this is? A game where you group with people? If you can't solo it, don't group with me!
So begins the "you're not good enough to play with me" wars...
We would be better off if the ability to look at someone else's gear was removed. To me, when Turbine added that feature to DDO, it ruined a large segment of the populace.
Yes, its a rant, but after 10 years of playing MMOs, I'm pretty sick of this elitist, bs attitude. I'll assume that the OP was even and actually trying to be helpful, but even in a post with advice, the attitude that you are wasting someone else's time in a game because you have not yet done 30 runs through the level 50 content evident. And it saddens me that it is already so.
If you didn't make friends, or join a guild, and expect random strangers to just "trust" you know what you're doing. In case you didn't realize it SWTOR is nothing but agear check game.
-
Also bear in mind that SWTOR is a product. It represents people's jobs, shareholders profits and a slice of the gaming market. The development and launch is paid for by investors, not gamers, and they like to see a return on their investment. Business plans are important - retaining players by keeping them interested and getting them to carry on playing means the community is larger and people have more fun playing because it is easier to group, whcih means more people are paying for subs and pumping more money back to the game developers to make more cool stuff with. And, at the end of the day, you can always just put your money back in your pocket.
This thread is a bit like getting angry with the ice-cream truck driver for playing his ice-cream van music in the park on a sunny day. You don't have to buy an ice-cream.
No, this is like the ice cream man playing his music. And when you get there he asks for money and he'll give you the ice cream tomorrow .Then tomorrow when he comes he sells you the cone, and says I'm new but I'll be back tomorrow. Then he comes and sells you the ice cream, but if you want the flavor you want you'll have to come back tomorrow.

SWTOR can't sell it's game on it's own merits. That's why it has to resort to all kinds of marketing trickery to keep it's players.
This is "legacy system in march" is just another bit of marketing trickery to get people to stay in their game.
If players really loved the game, they would just stay, they wouldn't need all the marketing trickery but Bioware knows it's game can't stand on it's own merit so it is going to release systems that are already done piecemeal so they can look like better than they are.
Like all of things everyone knows they removed from Beta they will start giving back to us, but only after you've subbed for yet another month for them to fix their own game.
-
Still having fun as well...maybe its because I avoided that other popular MMO with a ten foot pole. that and after playing a pure grindfest MMO previously I find TOR to be hilariously easy and relaxing to play. i mean i hit 50 on my first guy in 10-12 days or so.
Apologies for spelling and grammar mistakes. posting from mobile and this board does not like to let me capitalize.
How many others have you leveled to 50 and how much have you done on your 50 at 50?
-
It's the downfall of a game that based their entire game on story alone. Stories end. Subscription for such a game as this is a slap in the face.
Bioware should have just gone B2P, and made money with the expansions.
-
Wow great argument, please troll some more.
On another note, how is this not an MMO? The game is too big for co-op rpg if you ask me. If it would have been KOTOR 3 I would have played it as well because I loved both KOTORs.
How many people did you run into while leveling?
-
Wait...Its not singleplayer game?Im confused.
Well at least Bioware thinks it's an MMO. That's what matters.
-
For me swtor was fun until my 3rd character leveling and I realized that the replay value was 0. That alts were meaningless and it's probably time to cancel until Bioware does something useful with this game.
When was swtor fun for you? When did it stop being fun?
-
That's a really loaded question.
First thing you have to remember is, this game has all the voice overs that make for an awesome leveling experiences for one reason, because they were expecting to recoup all their losses through subscription fees. if they were not planning on making this an MMO, I doubt they would have spent anywhere near as much money on the Voice overs and quality leveling experiences, thus making the game not as good of a single play game that it seems to be now.
Skyrim was fully voiced. In fact every game coming out now a days is fully voiced.
Did this game deliver on the hype?
