  1. People will buy a game, consume the content they want to consume, then move on to the next game. This is true of any game out there. MMOs are no different. It's fair to say that this type of consumer behavior is already factored into Bioware's plans.
  2. You bought that WoW dev BS apparently.

Devs are quick to blame players for exploiting weaknesses in the systems that they design their games around. In reality it is either weak and/or lazy design that leads to a system being capable of being abused. Rather then develop the systems to be robust and interactive, they are quarantined and and players lack that additional investment into their character. As a result a large majority of players have no idea how their stats contribute to their characters success in a particular encounter.

This is one of the reasons that you see so many bad players out there, everything is simply provided to them and they think that is the way it is supposed to be. They put no effort into making their character anything more than what is given to them and they really don't understand how their class works, much less classes they might be competing against. Next thing you know you have a forum full of whining players, complaining about things that they don't even understand.

Well, at the end of the day, developers want their game to be accessible. Any game that has a high entry requirement(in time commitment, research, skill, or what have you) will not attract players. The vast majority of players are not hardcore. Most players might log in for a few hours every night, or play on the weekend, or PVP on their lunch break, or whatever. They will not research online for optimal builds. They just wanna have fun playing the game. It's the developer's objective to make it so they can do that.

And yes, I agree with Ghostcrawler. His blog posts make a lot of sense.

  3. I feel it is not the community in general that is at fault, it is a combination of many things for example:

Downtime: Both expected and unexpected because the devs released a patch which broke the game mechanic, then have to release another patch to fix that patch.

Server Stability: Why did The Harbinger go offline when all other servers were fine? Don't you guys have RAID (this is my overly simplified look at it without knowing the details over what transpired today). But really guys, in this day and age the sever status should not even hiccup with the tech available.

Lore: There is very little Star Wars going on here. This could be ANY game with a SW skin tossed over it, the race selection and the locales are about all there is here that is Star Wars.

Space Combat: It is on RAILS, yes no joke, this was more an a seemingly afterthought of "feature" tossed in last minute just so the publisher can say Yes there is space combat, and checked it off the to do list.

Load Times: I click map, select a planet and go to, LOAD, I run to exit ship and LOAD, many instances LOAD LOAD LOAD. Seriously guys, you should have looked at the original Dungeon Siege to see how it would be handled properly.

Overall, I have enjoyed the game over the past month that I have owned it when I could play, but the server downtimes, technical instability of the patches, then more patches to fix THOSE patches just sour the outlook.

The player base I have found quite friendly, yes you will encounter immature people, but this is true in ANY life experience not just games. Overall I was hoping to have liked it much better but no dice. If they had released and given us an MMO version Knights of The Old Republic, then this game would have been RED HOT, and I feel the player-base as whole would have been happier. It seems a strong combination of many aspects about this game that has caused me to reconsider.

My expectations were misplaced, my hopes were a tad too high, and overall, as satisfying as SOME of the gameplay may be, it does not (in my mind) justify calling this Star Wars The Old Republic.

Downtime: A fact of life for MMOs. Some have more, some have less. SWTOR is average.

Server Stability: If you have one server go offline on any given week, you're doing just fine. I understand if you're upset if your server goes offline, and I know it does suck when it happens to me. I've experienced far worse things in other MMOs. Generally the performance in SWTOR has been pretty good.

Lore: There's a lot of lore in game. I think you're probably just not looking for it.

Space Combat: A rail shooter is probably a better idea than free-form. It's easier to get into, easy to run through relatively quickly, and is a fun little minigame, which was pretty much all it was intended to be. If you don't like it, you can choose not to do it.

Load Times: are a total *****. Yes.

  4. There's a certain subset of the MMO population who will always calculate the most effective or efficient allocation for points. For example, you could allocate your level up stat bonuses however you liked in Diablo 1 and 2, but the power gamers quickly came up with the 'best builds' that gave them the most power possible. For the vast majority of the gaming population this is probably not important; however, when designing challenging PVE combat, or when dealing with PVP scenarios, every point counts. A PVPer wouldn't waste points in a stat that is useless in that situation(like presence), but allowing a generic point allocation system would gimp non-hardcore PVPers who choose not to avoid such stats. Additionally, having such a system in an MMO would make it much easier to make 'bad decisions' which could potentially ruin your character. Nobody wants a sage who put all his points in strength, as an extreme example.

As an alternative to such a system, MMOs use 'talents' to give players the ability to customize their characters to some degree, but even in these systems, power gamers still come up with the 'most optimal' solutions, and the player's feeling of choice becomes much more of an illusion. Nobody wants to make a 'bad' decision, but such bad decisions inevitably happen - this is why they have talent respecs, so people who made bad talent choices can undo them.

You could potentially put a 'stat respec' in, but honestly, base stat allocation is not a big deal, and doesn't provide nearly the customization potential of talents.

Some MMOs are even moving away from traditional talent trees(like WoW is doing in MoP). Ultimately it all comes down to minimizing the potential for bad decisions yet still retaining the feeling that your character is still uniquely 'yours'.

  5. Will you be unlocking the mouse view from the character's back, and solving many of the issues with the camera view?

In particular, when a character is moving, the camera persistently tries to return to its default position behind the character's back, and can display some odd behavior if prevented from doing so by holding down mouse buttons. In particular, if you hold down the mouse buttons and change directions with the keyboard, the camera view can on occasion(not reliably) shift dramatically to a top-down viewpoint or flip completely over.

  6. Hi folks,

We recently implemented a change to the global cooldown UI with Patch 1.1.2 and we realize that it has been a hot topic here in the Forums. In an effort to prioritize any new changes to the UI, we wanted to poll the community on their opinion of the current global cooldown UI. Please vote in the poll above! As a reminder, please only vote with the cooldown UI changes in mind.

I voted 'they're terrible' but I don't want to be overly negative. I feel the new UI changes have one glaring problem. I'm a Jedi Guardian, and not a GCD goes by that I'm not hitting SOMETHING as quickly as I can. The constant flashing of the entire bar makes it very difficult to see the icons beneath, and be able to see what abilites are greyed out and what abilities are ready for use.

I suggest you tweak the alpha on the GCD to make it more transparent, to make it easier to see the buttons underneath while the GCD animation is underway.

  7. the 'armoring' mod determines the rating on the item. As you upgrade your armor, upgrading the armoring mod increases the armor value on the item, and any base stats the armoring mod is responsible for. Similarly, hilts and barrels increase the damage range on the weapons and their rating.
  8. On my server (quite low pop) it is VERY hard to sell stuff at GN even at recommended value.

It rarely sell meaning you are unlikely to break even when creating stuff.

If you got something rare it is madness to put it out for say 500 000 because you cannot afford the fee if it is not sold! (Say for example orange belt and wrist with mad drop rate)

Would it not be better to lower the "taxes" and by that increase money flow?

I used the auction house in another big game that we do not mention and that did not cost an arm and a leg when putting out stuff for sale... In fact that system was quite nice compared.

Discuss (if you actually use GN, otherwise please refrain from posting!)

First of all, you put up a deposit when you put something on the GTN. If it doesn't sell at the end of the duration you specify, you get that deposit back. If it does sell, the GTN gets a 'cut', which is basically just money taken out of the system. TBH I'm not 100% sold on the fees system, but it's not horribly bad. It's certainly better than that other big game that we will not mention. You don't actually LOSE money from not selling items, it's just held in escrow for you until the item sells... or doesn't.

  9. I will start by saying I have a L50 scoundrel and am looking to make a Jedi Knight alt. I have been bouncing back and forth between the guardian and sentinel forums and can not decide which to play, both playstyles look appealing. I typically prefer to play the underdog class (which is why I went smuggler first) and am trying to decide which of these two classes has the most skill requirement?

I will note that I am an experienced mmo'er of 14 years, primarily playing pvp games or on pvp servers. I am looking at the class for the sake of pvp both in warzones and on ilum. I would say I am a fairly high skill player, I utilize hotkeys (not a clicker) as well as make use of the macro software of my gaming mouse/keyboard.

Please give me your opinion on which class you feel will more suit what I am looking for and why.

    Thank you.

I have a level 50 Guardian and a level 44 Scoundrel. Going from Scoundrel to Guardian is like trading down from a luxury import to a model T ford.

  10. he is referring to having it Root the target. I do not know the answer to this question though

    shhh you're ruining it.

OP there's a talent that you can take to stun your target when you force leap at them. Also, you can talent to make master strike immobilize your target. That's all I can think of. Perhaps you misunderstood whatever situation occurred to you.

  11. I just turned level 30. I'm Armormech/scavenging/underworld trading. I have 1,227 credits. I have not ever had enough money to afford a speeder. I cant buy anything off the auction house. Crafting has taken all of my money and, frankly, given me very little of value in return. I have learned that people are not interested in buying anything i have to sell from the auction house. I put several purple pieces at what i thought was an extremely reasonable price but after 2 days i had not made a single sale.

Come to find out, everyone just wears orange gear and upgrades the stuff they put in them. Is my profession even remotely useful in that sort of situation? It seems kind of broken when you have a profession that is meant to provide gear, but equivalent or superior (not to mention fully customizable) pieces are readily available (gear is often quest reward or bought cheaply off a vendor, mods are bought with planetary badges). My own character has orange helm, gloves, boots, chest, and pants. Whats left for me to sell? Belts?

I chose my profession under the assumption that it would eventually pay off, but here I am 30 levels later and i have nothing to show for it besides the little bar in the crew skills window being half way filled and an empty wallet.

I guess if I wanted to make money i should have gone slicing? Oh wait that got nerfed.

    So answer me this:

True/False If I had utterly ignored the entire crafting feature of this game I would be several hundred thousand credits richer with no drawbacks. And i would have a speeder.

True. BUT. At the endgame, having armormech will allow you to craft endgame tier pieces. Recipes drop off of operation bosses. It's an investment for the future.

I've been in your situation where I had 1.5k credits(though I never was so bad as to not be able to afford speeder training... eventually). Just keep questing and for god's sake, stop spending credits on missions till you have the training you want!

At the endgame there are dailies in belsavis and ilum that will reward you with 100-200k credits a day. I'm currently sitting on 500k credits and I've been buying stuff like mad.

  12. Artifice can still craft enhancements, and the daily commendations only cover armorings and hilts, so mods and enhancements are still in demand. The dailies also reward class specific artifact mods, but only rank 22 artifact quality, so not actually better than the best you can get from cybertech. As for enhancements, I have yet to see a daily quest that gives artifact quality rank 22 enhancements.
  13. If thats the case then the OPs argument really holds no water. If a guardian can run within 5% of a DPS class and still shield and mitigate like a tank then they should be a super class to play. I won't argue that with you since I haven't played a Knight. I just pointed out from the start that it seemed odd to choose a tank class (even though it has DPS trees) and then complain about being a meatshield.

properly specced and geared, a guardian can do excellent dps OR be a great tank. You can't be both at once. This is the choice you make when you choose which talent tree to follow.

  14. Its not acceptable and that's it, i could play ONLY today because of holyday, but i cant...

Do maintenance at night when ppl not playing like 2 am.

I expect "free day" compensations for this days !

The servers are going to come back up(probably) in about 20 minutes. Until then, keep your pants on, junior.
