  1. Seriously, what is wrong with people today? They already explained and apologized. Do you want their blood too?

For gods sake grow up and get some perspective on life outside video games.

We wouldnt be posting if we could play.. yet here you are posting as well.

    Pot. Kettle. Black.

  2. Blah Blah Blah. To the OP, please grow up! This is a MMO. Testing on a test server will never be the same as the actual live servers. Some times testing fails to expose potential problems. It just happens and your complaining and having no understanding of how the system actually works does not help the situation in any way.

You've lived this long, being that dumb?

The patch was 2 lines. They are now into over 12 hours of maintenance. You figure it out.

  3. While I'm in no way shape or form the greatest font of knowledge when it comes to how SWTOR uses hardware, I have run into this exact issue in the past.

The crux of my issue (and it was to do with another MMO and iTunes) was that I didn't have a sound-card. What was happening was simply that the on board sound chipset was causing a bottleneck and slowing everything down at a processor level, as it has to use the processor - it simply couldn't handle iTunes and rendering another audio source at the same time.

I bought a cheap sound card (£20 ish) and it fixed it instantly.

Again, I'm not saying this will fix your issue in particular, but you didn't list a sound card while talking about audio issues, so I'm working under the assumption that you're using your on-board sound. People often don't think that audio requires processing horsepower too.

... You didnt have a soundcard.. I'm sorry but the difference between onboard and dedicated sound cards went out the window about 6 years ago (you know, when the game was designed)

Even if people realise you meant to say you didnt have a 'dedicated' soundcard, i'd love to hear from anyone with a PC who had to buy dedicated sound cards because some game on their PC wouldnt work. (PS those people arent the ones who advertise your game).

  4.

    The sky is not falling.

It was never a sky to begin with. Maybe some low level fog. If the game had launched with 1.2, things might be different.

Also just like to point out that GW2 has a nifty feature for overflowing servers. Unlike SWTOR which bagged our rift for launching new servers and having to do merging.

Oh wait, whats that on the horizon? merging swtor servers? well i never.

  5. Thats exactly it.

Rapid prototyping and online development are hero engines strong points they actually are innovative in that area.

Its the rest of it that is very very poor.

I mean they dont even talk about rendering or anything like that in their marketing.

Its all about the backend for them which is fine.

We can host the 100 customers you manage to keep! (thats the new approach of hero)

  6. This is a very good post. This poster is the pure definition of the casual gamer BW needs to capture. yet he's not entirely satisfied.

He probably won't be ever, either. BW have been very obscure in their efforts to fix this abysmal game engine. They are actually advertising the fact theres a new, lowest ever, shader detail level.

Honestly, i dont think I could live with myself if i released a game in the last decade that looks like swtor does on the new low settings.

I'm going to quote myself here because god damn, who the hell releases a game designed for low end computers, then gets it so wrong they have to add a new low setting (after already removing previous settings because they got that so wrong too).

Cmon who can defend that sort of behavior??

  7. But, for what it's worth and as much as I'm aghast and disappointed by how much it feels to me like I'm playing WoW in space with lightsabers, running around and hitting things and so on feels pretty well done. I don't like what it's doing or how it's philosophically designed to do it, but it's doing it pretty well for all that.

  8. Again, sell me on the Unreal Engine.

    What AAA MMOs use it?

What are the differences between it and Hero?

What are the technical advantages it has over Hero?

    Honest questions.

Honestly, im not sure UE3 can hold an mmo up on its own. it would look better though.

Rift shows that a mmo on its own custom engine (based on another one i cant remeber) can work though.

  9. Point 2 & 3 don't match. I'm curious how can you say you're cheep yet buy a 6month sub?

Also how can you say you think they can fix the game and in the next breadth say the issues you have is stuff they can't fix.

And finally what does the issues you mentioned have to do with the engine?

    I'm confused.

So you avoid giving the technical reasons by saying other games use it.

The question was what are the technical reasons. You know part of the things that companies use to make a decision.

You're blindly defending a game. Name another game that uses Hero Engine, that has the same dev time and money invested like this game.

  10. HE is free to use btw.

I have a server from them.

And ya the only thing really great about it in my eyes is the fast development.

But their base renderer is crap.

And thats where the issues are springing up from. That and memory management. Incase people missed the huge memory leaks around launch time.

Facts have no place in this thread when the fanbois are around. You'll shatter that fragile little bubble they are living in.

  11. Heres what your not understanding.

Many of us do like the game.

But we want to see it actually perform.

You think these are complaints from people that hate the game and are just complaining because we hate the game?

You got it wrong there buddy.

We are complaining for the same reason you are defending and arguing with us.

No ****. I still subscribe because the single player parts are good (my god the IA story), but there is nothing else holding me to it. This game needs to hitch its pants up and catch up with this decade.

Tera is going the other way. Looks gorgeous, PVP is fantastic. Questing is a god damn cut and paste from early 90's mmos.

  12. I'm not saying lag doesn't exist. I am saying that you and I are not qualified to determine where the issues are.

I'm just going to give a little knowing smirk here . I'll leave you to figure out what it means.

  13. Because I know at the heart of any game is a code base that determines how the game is rendered and how data is streamed amoung many many other things.

That comes from the game engine hun, code is then improved and added to the engine.

Hero engine's renderer is subpar at best.

You've got it all wrong.. Listen to the fanbois. Hero engine to this day powers many popular mmos like..

    er..

    hmmmm.

    Little help here fanbois?

  14. I'm sorry that you are having a hard time making friends.

I personally play the game with my family and guild.

I also meet new people out on the planets, make new friends, and continue enjoying the game and overall my life in general.

I hope it all works out for you in the end.

I'm in a guild. I play with friends. They've all quit and im still going.

    I'm dumb like that.

  15. And how are you helping exactly?

ZOMG THE ENGINE IS CRAP is not helpful.

You can't even say for a fact that lag is due to the engine. You can speculate, but you don't know.

If you were truly trying to help, you would post bug reports about lag and move on.

    hahahaha

Post bug reports about lag? What will that accomplish? You think there are specific scenarios where lag occurs, but otherwise its fine and the devs might not know about it?

"Today i was in fleet. I moved.. it lagged. I stayed still.. it lagged. I rotated 180 degress and I eventually gained control of my PC 30 minutes later"

Pull your head out. The only people defending this games performance is people who havent played a modern mmo.

  16. But yet you are still here.... leave already

Spoken like a player whos never touched any of the actual MP components of the game. How doe sit feel to pay $15 a month for a single player game with IRC included for free?

  17. Bioware should have continued with Eclipse, an in house engine developed for Dragon Age Origins, then adapt it to a MMORPG, much like Blizzard did with the Warcraft III one, for WoW.

Man, this didnt occur to me.. but you're bang on. Blizzard took a RTS engine, modified it, and turned it into an mmo successfully.

BW listened to one madman, started from scratch on a 3rd party engine not yet released, and ended up with a mediocre engine thats tarted up to disguise the facts its a single player game with IRC and co-op missions bolted on ( and is stuck in the past decade).

  18. No one outside of the Dev's know why they picked the Hero engine, we can speculate all we want, money, time, convience, and thats just it, us talking out our backsides, I have gone to the Hero website and read about the engine, I do wonder if the Hero engine people work with the bioware team to improve the engine, once again no one here knows, oil prices are based on specualtion, look where thats is taking us..specualtion is never a good thing, and it's never a right thing. and thats specualtion LOL.. I prefer facts myslef..:)

No, BW doesn't work with them any more. They stopped a couple years ago.

  19. It cracks me up that so many posters think they know something about this engine that the team at Bioware didn't or doesn't.

I agree that the game lags out when too many characters are in the same area, and that it's easy to conclude it's the fault of the engine design, but really do you honestly think you know more about how to fix it than the professionals at Bioware?

Not at all, I'm sure the guys that had to takeover the mess others left behind know full well what the problems are.

But you've also proven you don't have a clue either. " the game lags out when too many characters are in the same area". The game lags out in 16 player PVP. It lags out when there's 200 players in fleet.. but those 200 are spread out all over.

Thats not "too many characters". Go look up what River of Souls was like in Rift for the definition of too many characters in one place at one time.

  20. The guy who was instrumental in choosing the hero engine for this game.. left 11 months before it came out. (and that was to go to a social game company.. quite the change dont ya think, considering he coulda had all the credit for a triple A mmo (in theory))

Anyone remember what this game looked like back then? Remember those bland looking characters? that wasn't artwork not done.. that was the best they could come up with without killing the FPS. (name any other game that 12 months before release had unfinished artwork as bad as swtor did in their trailers). In the end they had to split it into high-def for cutscenes, and low def for everything else (except the faces.. they backed themselves into a corner with that one).

So what happened about a year ago? Rift launched around the same time, and looking infinitely better then SWTOR did back then. I'll have to check my facts, but im pretty sure ther was a blog about swtor in the past year where they had to revisit all the sets because the art department hadnt gotten it right (so who told the art department the wrong stuff to begin with? hmmm i wonder). I can't help but wonder if that was anything to do with the way Rift looked, and honestly Rift still looks way better environmentally. Shadows that dont look like they belong in minecraft? amazing!

I'm honestly not surprised that the Gordon skipped town to a casual game company after what he did to swtor (oh did i mention he was at SWG too??)

Neil Harris, president of HeroEngine, went on the defensive recently with regards to this game and its reception. One fact stands out quite a lot: BW split off developing this engine more then 2 years ago; they stopped getting updates from HeroEngine themselves.

If you had faith in the 3rd party providing the engine to you.. wouldn't you want to keep getting the latest code? BW will claim they customised this engine so much then couldn't easily update it any more. I'd love to know what was customised so much they couldnt manage those updates any more (eg even the space fights are a *core* component of HeroEngine). Either BW lost all faith in the engine, or (and this seems more likely) they thought they could do better themselves.

This being the same company who didnt even think on to include a /roll option in a game with master looting. Yer.. wonder who made those decisions....

One last point. Graphics don't make the game, theres no doubt about that: They add to the experience. But then why are so many people so vocal about the engine? because once you get past the quest lines, and look into the actual MP part of this game.. its decidedly lacking. This is a single player game, trying very hard to be MP, that we're paying a monthly fee to play and we dont even get proper graphics fidelity to distract us from that fact.

SWTOR is a game where the design documents, and the engine, were locked down about 5 years ago. If this game had launched back then, it would easily be top of the charts right now (the missing features now, wouldnt have been an issue 5 years ago). As it stands, it just smacks of being stuck in the past.
