New laptop for tor.

Wanted to know if anyone could help me, I decided to upgrade from my 2year old studio xps since play with a jittering 15-20fps is hurting my eyes. All the settings on low =/

Just wondering if this would be able to run swtor on high settings.

2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz

6144MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [1x4096 + 1x2048]

2GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M Graphics Card

Seems beefy enough but I don't know graphics cards. Can also go for a different model and get a gt555m card with 3gb. But that's about another 150euros. Furthermore should I opt for 8gb of RAM or would this be enough?

Similar specs to mine, and it runs fine :) I play on medium to high settings with an average fps of 40-50. I've got 8gb memory, but I think 6gb should be more than enough. The graphics card is a workhorse and really gets the job done.

edit: Just make sure it's got enough ventilation as the game can make the unit run pretty hot. I find my notebook pumps out incredibly hot air, so I either alt-tab to let it cool down a bit, or get some air flowing in the room by opening a window or turning on a fan.

Yeah I'm hoping the 6GB should do it. Basically I'm seeing how manageable I can get the price and if I can afford a 1080p display. Current machine has a very very pretty screen, and it's ruined other comps for me =[

Good to hear it runs nicely. Can also opt for a similar piece that has a gt550m card instead of the 540m. Only downside I can see is needing to get a new laptop case.

How hard would it be to replace the RAM in a dell xps17 post purchase? Assuming I wanted more later.

First off changing ram is really easy in any laptop. One screw to open a door and there it is. Anyways I would really recommend that you spend a little extra and get the better gpu. I play this game fine a 450. But at the same time the high end settings get me an fps rate around 30-50. The 540 will under perform that. Just keep that in mind. Good luck!

How about 550m then on the other build? The problem with going with the 555m is not only do I have the cost of the card upgrade but it also forces me to get a 9-cell battery. Not to mention from my own googling most of the 3gbs on the 555 is wasted ram just in there to up the price =/

btw, what do you mean by "play this game fine a 450"?

This machine would be doubling as my collegework machine which is why I'd rather not have a desktop. There's also not alot of space in my room for such a machine.

Personally I love my video card. The 450 and the 550 are both about the same. The 550 will have better performance just because of the fact that it is newer but not much. I would recommend going with the 550. It will be a decent leap over the 540 and like you said the cost to move up to the 555 is to much for the small change. Now you have to keep in mind this is a laptop card so they are usually built a little worse than their desktop counter parts. But I think you will be playing this game between 30-60fps with shadows on low but everything else on high. I do experience some low fps in a large city though. I have dropped below 20fps a few times. But it is small issue. Anyways hope this helps.
