The controls are too clunky to quickly move them out of it, so if they would just passively figure out to not stand in it that would be nice. TIP: it is very easy to move your companion out of AOE. you just have to hit the passive function on them for a second and then re-enable attack. Works like a charm, unless you and your companion are standing in exactly the same spot (which would make you part of the problem, rather then the solution, so let's assume that's not the case). REASONABLE: you do have to marginally command and control your companions to get the most out of them. clearing out of AOE is a perfect example. Love them and take care of them.
