It's a remnant of the system for droid companions (M1-4X, T7-O1, C2-N2, and 2R-V8) that was removed from the game in patch 4.0 three years ago. Before that, all companions wore actual gear for their stats, and droid companions, rather than using "person" armour, used droid parts (motors, armour plates, etc.). Conclusion: sell it to a vendor.
