More aggro?

I just came back to my Vanguard Shield Specialist recently for the first time since 4.0. Maybe the first time since 3.0 :rolleyes:

 

I coulda swore there were more agro abilities for this class the last time I played...I think now, there are only 2? The aoe one, and single target harpoon. Is that it?! I think before you could get explosive surge to generate agro, but I don't see that option anymore.

 

Am I missing something? Only 2 agro skills on relatively long cooldowns?

I'm not sure what you mean by "aggro abilities", almost every ability generates aggro. Do you mean high threat generating moves? You also have stockstrike and high impact bolt, not to mention that the vanguard has a whole bunch of stuff thats off the gcd, so it evens out to an extra "high threat generating abilitiy" pretty easily. And I'm not sure what aoe you are talking about that you mean pulse cannon, which isn't high threat I believe, it just puts a debuff that lowers the enemy damage and that's why it's in the rotation.

Sorry I guess I should've said 'taunt'. We have the single target harpoon (generates high threat), and an aoe taunt (sonic round). I just thought that last time I played my shield specialist there were more threat specific skills via the old tress vs. new disciplines.

 

I'm asking since I kept losing threat to a stong dps last night in a HM FP. I'm 65, and geared in shield augmented 208's. I didn't inspect the dps, but they had some of the highest health I've seen on a 65 dps. I expect they were well geared. Even after asking them to 3-count before jumping in and going beast mode, I still lost threat. It's kinda embarrassing as a tank, strains the healer, and creates risk for the group.

Probably AP or carnage mara in 224. Nothing to be embarrassed about if you're in 208. Just slap a guard on him and on boss fights use 3 taunt opener if pulling agro can cause a wipe.

Oh and harpoon isn't your taunt. On vanguard i believe it's called neural jolt

aha! I think this one musta fell off my skill bar, need to check when I get home. I thought there was something missing. Thank you.

I would recommend a double taunt rotation as an opener in such a scenario. And, don't forget that your harpoon is now a high threat move...perfect for openers. If you time your double taunt rotation correctly, you can virtually guarantee aggro for almost 20 seconds. And, by then, (assuming you have your set bonus) you should have been able to generate enough aggro to hold the boss indefinitely by proper use of your single taunt and aggro building moves.

 

Guard the burster and follow the above paragraph and you'll be good.
