raandomname
So I decided to try to do some calcs to actually find out the true size of the Grand Army of the Republic. A lot of this is obviously gonna be speculation, because Star Wars gives us so few definite numbers, but we do have some numbers that we can base this on. Wookiee gives us 1000+ Venators participating in the Battle of Coruscant. Multiple sources tell us that the Republic pulled almost all of its forces into this battle, so 1500 Venators seems like a reasonable estimate for their number in the Republic Navy. 1 Venator carries 2000 troops. 1500 x 2000 = 3000000. Then of course we have other ships in the Republic Navy such as Acclamators. Given that an Acclamator is smaller then a Venator, a total of 2000 Acclamators in the Republic Navy seems reasonable. 1 Acclamator carries 16000 troops. 2000 x 16000 = 32000000. 32000000 +3000000 = 35000000 and then of course we still have troops aboard other smaller ships such as Dreadought Cruiser or on larger ships such as Mandators as well as in permanent garisions on key planets. Although we have no numbers at all for these, I think just doubling the numbers seems reasonable. This leaves us with a VERY rough estimate of approximatelly 70000000 clones. Thoughts? Omegablue
this assumes the entire GAR was clones and not just the more elite units. entirely possible some or most of those ships were crewed with former Judicials and planetary security force crews and ground troops.....or Sci-fi writers have absolutely no sense of scale. Aurbere
The Clone army, IIRC, was estimated at around 3 billion soldiers.
DarthDymond
...or Sci-fi writers have absolutely no sense of scale. ^ Emphatically this. The size of the Republic, the number of contested worlds, the number of troops that would reasonably be needed to hold an entire world... it all adds up to fans' just needing to bring in our suspension of disbelief because 99% of Sci-Fi writers, let alone Space Fantasy writers, are just not going to do justice to the scale that would actually be involved. The size of the GAR has been extensively debated and controversial since the "200,000 units, with 1,000,000 more almost ready" line in AotC. The Wookieepedia article has a whole subsection devoted to the controversy.
Ghisallo
Just a few million clone troops could actually be reasonable depending on tactics. You could use clone troops as shocktroops (aka sturmtruppen...stormtroopers) and then the "regular" planetary troops for clean up, occupation and defense of fortified positions etc.
