You really only need green gear to do the class quests. I never updated my mods at all and took 3 characters from 1-55. Once or twice through the whole process I'd stop at GTN and buy some green gear. Then, I went to Makeb at L47, Makeb has gear bolster. I died a bunch on Makeb but made it through.
