The REAL Problem With This Game

The reason is that the sandbox type game has a much smaller market appeal than theme park/level/raid-4-gear game does. There have been other sandbox MMOs besides SWG -- Ultima Online, EVE Online, A Tale in the Desert and so on. Even EQ1 is much more open world/sandbox oriented than most modern MMOs. The trouble is that the sandbox games appeal only to a very certain type of player, while the theme park games have a broader appeal -- even taking the hardcore raiding community alone, which is a smallish segment of the total community, it is larger than the group that prefers sandbox type games.

I'm not a fan of Warcraft, but it has been a very successful game -- it is an approach that a lot of gamers seem to like, and like a lot more than a sandbox. It's hard to finance the development of a AAA MMO title if it is going to be a sandbox game, because that just doesn't pencil very well.

The reason why MMOs are like that is because WoW has ruined the MMO genre. People expect everything to play like WoW but be "better". - Hence the page full of whiny threads, you nailed it here.

Fact of the matter is, you can't do this because they think WoW is some kind of magical perfection of MMO-playing and you can't ever be "better" then it. Despite the fact WoW isn't really that good at all.

Notice how they only think it's better while they aren't there playing it? You should see their forums LOL.
