New game mode: Capital Ship Battle

All the talk about capital ships and such got me thinking about how they are in the Star Wars movies. Capital ships don't hang back and let the fighters kill each other. They move in and blast each other, as well as any fighters that are slow enough turbo lasers can track them. Even if they try to hang back like the Empire in RotJ, they get pulled into the fight eventually.

That got me to thinking about a new game mode idea., "Capital Ship Battle".

The basic concept would be two opposing capital ships slowly moving towards each other on the battlefield. Unaltered, they will destroy each other in 15 minutes. Damage bars for each capital ship would be visible to both teams. Victory conditions are that either your team destroys the enemy capital ship while yours is still alive, or if both are killed, it would default to the higher kill count.

Capital Ships would have several shield generators protecting areas of the ship. One for the bridge, and 2 - 4 others protecting the turbo lasers and hull area. Shield generators would be attackable, and taking one out would open that area of the ship up for attack for one minute, at which point the shield generator would come back online.

If the bridge is attacked while it's shield generator is down, it would have the following effects.

  • Damage output from the capital ship against it's opponent is reduced.
  • Turrets temporarily cannot target starfighters.

If a shield generator protecting another area of the ship is down, it would have the following effects.

  • The target capital ship would take damage from the opposing capital ship at a higher rate.
  • Turbo lasers in that area of the ship become targetable.

Turbo lasers would do two things in the game:

  • Provide steady damage against the opposing capital ship.
  • Target and destroy stationary starfighters within a certain range of the capital ship. (Not long enough to enough
range to make gunships useless, but enough to make them hang back and eliminate stationary dogfighting.)

If a turbo laser is destroyed, it would be rebuilt/repaired two minutes later. Thus eliminating one would reduce the overall damage your own capital ship is taking, and temporarily allow you relief from being targeted by capital ship turbo lasers in that area.

Granted it's a bit rough, and would need a lot of tweaking, but I think the idea would be fun if it could be balanced properly. Thoughts?

When I heard there was going to be a bomber role I immediately thought oh cool they are going to have an attack the capitol ship scenario! Then we got to see what bombers really were lol.

At least one bomber does carry torpedoes. Unfortunately, that's why a cap ship scenario would be difficult to balance. The default ships don't have them (strikes can get them but what are scouts for in this scenario?)

Protecting the bombers and killing enemy ships and maybe taking out turret emplacements and shield generators on the capital ships?

Anything would have been better than the stupid idea that is our current bomber role.

Agreed. It would be nice to see bombers be.............bombers.

And scouts would be far from useless in this scenario. While your bombers and strikes are going in for the torpedo hits someone needs to keep the opposing factions ships off their ***.

While we're dreaming I want to fly INSIDE the structure of giant ships/space stations too. ROTJ style.

You'll actually save yourself a headache if you just drop the monkier bombers and replace it with minelayers, which is what they are.

*waves hand*

Pikes/Quells are the bombers you are looking for.

love the idea. i think they will bring something like this in at somepoint since most of the mechanics needed for it are already in place, just need those capital ships to start moving instead of base capture.

Good idea with some good possibilities.

Lower damage of the capital ship so it takes a few shots to down each player ship, each time u take a turret out on capital ship awards points, each time u take a shield etc awards points and they can keep their 1000 score type thing bioware likes.

If they did bring something like this in would open up lots of ideas from escort modes, seek and destroy type things.

i love the way GSF is shaping up to be and include game modes like this idea would only make it seriously excel in a massive great way for me.
