It will discuss each of the Forms’ greatest masters, and also attempt to clear up misconceptions regarding them. Shii-Cho is the most basic of Lightsaber Forms, the first Form taught to Jedi Younglings. It focuses on targeting the main body zones of a target and dealing with multiple opponents, making users of more advanced Forms like Makashi capable of picking apart the basic techniques of Shii-Cho users in single combat. The Form’s most notable practitioner was Nautolan Jedi Master Kit Fisto, who mastered Shii-Cho to its highest levels. At its highest levels, Shii-Cho took on the facets of Ataru and Juyo, becoming a fast-paced and unpredictable fighting style. Despite using this basic Form, Kit Fisto was considered to be one of the Jedi Order’s finest swordmasters and was one of the swordmasters chosen by Mace Windu to confront the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, where they would be the first casualties of the Great Jedi Purge. It has been said that Fisto did not eliminate Shii-Cho’s weakness to single opponents. The instances cited are Fisto’s duel with Asajj Ventress, and the Showdown on Coruscant. As depicted in the novel ‘The Cestus Deception’, prior to their duel, Asajj Ventress studied Fisto’s hand-to-hand capabilities, noting that they would reveal Kit Fisto’s fighting style. So clearly Ventress had a tactical advantage in their engagement as well as being a high-level practitioner of Makashi. The duel with Sidious is even more one-sided. As noted in the Revenge of the Sith novel, the Revenge of the Sith Visual Dictionary, and several other sources, Darth Sidious attacked them with immense speed and caught the group off-guard. Unlike his compatriots, Agen Kolar and Saesee Tiin, Fisto managed to put up a defense however brief it was. In addition to catching them off-guard, Sidious was very much Fisto’s superior in Force ability and dueling skill. Fisto was completely outclassed on every level. We should also note Kit Fisto’s sparring match with Obi-Wan Kenobi during the events of ‘The Cestus Deception.’ Here Kit Fisto was clearly Kenobi’s superior, despite a supposed weakness to single opponents. It should be noted that by this time in the war, Kenobi had engaged Asajj Ventress and held his own. The only real evidence against Fisto’s mastery is his duel with Asajj Ventress, but as I noted, Fisto was at a severe tactical disadvantage. Is the possibility for weakness there? Perhaps, but his encounters with Sidious and Ventress are not true indicators.
