Native support for Mumble positional audio

Something that should be a rather easy feature, really: the game could supply information for positional audio through Mumble's Link plugin, which would enable people hearing roughly where their teammates are.

The impact would be low, since the game would only need to write the local character's position and some metadata (describing the location so people in different environments don't get positioned relative to each other), so this would not enable any kind of "radar" or other localisation hacks since players would only ever be voluntarily and selectively divulging their own location. Guild Wars 2 added the feature a few months back.

On a sidenote, the information can of course be used for other purposes, since the communication between the game and the voice client is done through a shared memory file with a well-defined format, so other applications, including other VoIP tools, would of course be free to use it.

Why is this not being demanded by the community?

Positional audio? That's the bee's knee's!

Imagine having dedicated SWTOR mumble servers. Everyone in the server just joins the same channel and talking can commence. Would be so much easier to call inc on a pylon or such.

For those worried about auto spamming fools, there is a local mute feature that allows one to basically ignore a character.

One of the best features Mumble has is it can be integrated into the actual game. Look at Project Reality. A mod for the Battlefield 2 engine. They integrated mumble into the very game. Works like a charm! couldn't play the game any other way. Once a person joins a PR server, they are automatically linked to their appropriate team, squad channel.

TL;DR POSITIONAL AUDIO IS THE FUTURE! STOP TYPING AND START TALKING!

It's not being demanded because a lot of us have played games with audio chat, and don't want to listen to some gibbering idiots.

I remember playing Mass Effect 3 and having to listen to a bunch of Americans yammer on about terrorist states, then one of them started criticising how I played (not realising I could hear his mindless chatter), it took a lot of willpower not to speak up and tell him to <censored>.

PS. Not criticising Americans in general, just a very specific group of idiots.

PPS. The countries were not terrorist states, just not allied with the USA.
