Atracin
...Well, kind of. See pre 1.2, I used played with several builds: Full Shield Spec, Assault, versions of the Iron Fist, and the fabled Carolina Parakeet (which was my favourite). But, 1.2 hit and ruined the whole Ionic Accelerator/Ion Cell party. I liked the parakeet because it used Ion Cell, HiB procs, and the ability to Storm. Post 1.2, I don't like most of the builds that I have played. Tactics was fun, but I missed the fire of and range of Assault. Shield was fun, but got boring after awhile. So, I decided to go back to a version of the Carolina Parakeet. This version allocates some points differently since Plasma Cell is being run, and so the talents that would need Ion Cell are useless. The 21/2/18 build. And low and behold, it works. I do miss the functionality of Ion Cell (and the ability to guard), but I still retain the Storm Ability (great in all Warzones), as well as Ionic Accelerator. I have noticed a small drop in survivability by investing in different talents as well as the fact I no longer run Ion Cell, and I obviously don't rack up as much medals as my team mates who can heal or guard, but all in all running a DPS Vanguard, I do just fine. She's still fun as ever. Some screenshots, I might have been able to get more medals if I used Neural Jolt more, but oh well... http://imageshack.us/f/641/screenshot2012061417430.jpg/ <-- Best game tonight. http://imageshack.us/f/151/screenshot2012061422082.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/f/585/screenshot2012061418194.jpg/ <-- Most kills that match http://imageshack.us/f/27/screenshot2012061415243.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/f/152/screenshot2012052100075.jpg/ Screenshots were taken tonight. In terms of medals, Novare Coast is terrible for me. I can rack up 20 kills with a few deaths (or no deaths even) and get somewhere near the bottom of my team in terms of medal count. I do well in all the other WZs.
rolotomasi
did you use shield or generator? if you use generator, can you still shield any attack?
dcgregorya
but all in all running a DPS Vanguard, I do just fine 150k is very low for a DPS. It's low for a tank. Edited June 15, 2012 by dcgregorya
Hethroin
You're doing 50% (roughly) less damage than full assault, and gain storm, while also doing no meaningful protection. You also went and picked up the worst possible talents from the lower assault options. I have developed a heavy hatred for all of you pseudo-tanking-half-dpsers that seem to think you're special and can somehow make a horrible spec work. You end up spending 15 points on storm, 6 of them do absolutely nothing for you without a shield. Another 6 do nothing for your offensive ability. There is only one warzone where storm is meaningful, Hutt Ball; the rest of them have nearly no functional difference between "storm" and "walk over". If you're running the ball in Plasma Cell you're taking more damage then a sentinel, tank shadow, guardian, or Ion Cell VG. This makes you a 5th-best option for running the ball. The_FLIPmode
What Hethroin said. The power of the Parakeet build was combining the toughness of Ion Spec with resetting the HiB from assault tree. Majority of your talents you picked up add nothing to survivability and some are completely counter-intuitive (such as Shield Cycler when you don't even use a shield). An assault Vanguard or heck, even tactics Vanguard, will do better than that spec.
Atracin
I use a Power Generator. 150k is very low for a DPS. It's low for a tank. Yeah. The thing was I've always been able to do some good amount of kills with those numbers. I loved Assault, but there was always something uncomfortable about it. I do miss AP though. Lrn2play Issue I'm sure. I have played Assault. http://imageshack.us/f/641/assault3.jpg/ (The only screenshot of AS I have) I love Assault, but having leveled to 50 using a Shield Spec, I missed the key talent that I've become accustomed to. Storm has it's other uses: Ex Voidstar - More than one opponent is planting the bomb and my team mates are either preoccupied with their fights or are waiting at spawn. I can Storm up to the group, Explosive Surge and interrupt the cap, and survive long enough to keep their attention until help arrives. I know that Shield and Assault trees will have more survivability than me and do more damage than me (respectively), but as far as I've seen it works okay and I like it. I will probably go back to a 31 Shield, but I'll play this out for a few more games. In terms of damage numbers, I know I can do better. My current Combat Tech gear isn't as good as the Eliminator sets. I could pop my relics and Battle Focus more often. Again I went from a full 31 point Shield Spec to this So I'm still trying to learn a proper rotation. Edited June 15, 2012 by Atracin
Hethroin
... I can Storm up to the group, Explosive Surge and interrupt the cap,... Or you could use one of your 30m AE attacks. Edited June 15, 2012 by Hethroin
Atracin
Or you could use one of your 30m AE attacks. I had forgotten I had that ability. Point taken, thank you. First game of the day: http://imageshack.us/f/191/screenshot2012061510110.jpg/ I see what you guys are saying. But excuse me as I try to play the rest of the day with it, then time for Assault again. Thanks Hethroin. Edited June 15, 2012 by Atracin
Hethroin
... First game of the day: http://imageshack.us/f/191/screenshot2012061510110.jpg/ Looks to me like you were out-gunned by Zerograv the commando and Mishu (what I can assume is a DPS shadow). Also http://tinypic.com/ is awesome, and doesn't make people click twice on the picture to see it, and has no popup adds.
Atracin
Yeah, their team was very good. But it was nice to see they had two commandos playing. I'm always happy to see them. And I'll try out that site. I was using Photobucket before but it resized all the pictures. Thanks!

Atracin
Day 2 of testing, I keep forgetting to take screenshots. I seem to be getting quite a bit of luck out of this build. Very fun to play. http://i49.tinypic.com/mh5c3o.jpg The other Trooper was an Assault Specialist, so I don't think I am too far behind. I'll go back to Assault soon enough. Chazcon
Everybody wants a popular spec named after them. Warhol 15 minutes etc. A good spec is not just a random assembly of talents that no one else uses with a name slapped on it like 'Green Dragon". A good spec is well-thought out with a specific goal in mind, creates synergy between complimentary talents, has zero or few wasted talent points, has been tested repeatedly by more than the spec creator and his little brother, and demonstrates measurable, repeatable data that proves that it achieves the original goal. There are a handful of good specs with different goals in mind. Everyone plays differently and wants different things, c'est la vie, that is very cool. Play a spec that YOU like and that fits your playstyle. But please don't waste bandwidth publishing a JACS - Just Another Crap Spec. Oh hey wait... that's a great name for a spec - think I'll throw darts at the Vanguard tree and make my own spec!
