discosoc
Game mechanics are generally separate from story and lore. It's not a Star Wars thing, but a gaming thing, especially with MMO's.
Anysao
The idea is "your the chosen one". But paying for abilities I think it more meant for military classes (smuggler, agent, etc.) I agree. The abilties up to level 10 should be free. Just makes more sense.
Scotwest
So you'd just have skill progression and ability unlocks... for free? Got to say, some of the later-level costs of upgrading and unlocking abilities are extortionate and are yet another hopelessly over-the-top credit-sink, but really the mechanic of paying for the training each level makes sense. I haven't played a lot of MMOs, but in City of Heroes/Villains, training up to a new level is free. That is, it requires time and effort to acquire the necessary xp, but the trainers don't charge to unlock your new abilities once you've reached the next tier. I was actually surprised in beta to discover that leveling cost not only time, but credits, and frankly shocked by how, as you say, extortionate the whole process is. I love the game, and probably spend far too much time playing it, but if there's a major weakness, I've always felt it was the in-game economy.
