Before the 1.2 patch, it was considered acceptable to run a HM FP in Champion gear. I even ran full normal KP's and EV's with zero deaths in mixed Cent/Champ gear. Recruit gear is pretty much just the new name for Champion gear, and it's blue instead of purple.
