Healing

So I've loved TOR and been playing since before release, but want to switch to a healing class. I prefer healers that focus on heals over time rather than direct heals.

I have no idea how the healers work, but have played WoW and DDO and would appreciate comparisons to healers in those games if appropriate.

Any suggestions, or comments on similarities between class healing styles to DDO/WoW classes?

If you want start healing now, Sage/Sorcerer is only reasonable class.. His healing is based around HoT + spell of choice combos

Article linked in post above is based purely on paper theory on early stages of game, so wouldnt even look at this because might give you false idea. (Scoudrels are FAR from druids)

I am really tired of hearing people say sage is the only reasonable heal class, it is completely untrue and uneducated.

Here is my simple summary of the difference between the 2, to help answer the original posters inquiry:

Sage: familiar resource (force=mana), nice variety of heals, super strong AE. Straight forward rotation. Better effective dps contribution when needed in encounters (especially at range).

Sawbones smuggler: if your a seasoned MMO healer you will love the class. It is engaging and dynamic and very effective if played correctly (which clearly a lot of people don't). It's healing is based around sustaining health, not 'reactionary' aka 'oh crap' healing and is extremely easy manage resource.

Loads of utility skills for a little spice (sap, stuns, interrupts, stealth)

It is one of those class's that is in the details, if your into polishing your gameplay and enjoy the small things sawbones is super engaging. If your more of a linear player you will feel like a lot of the complainers of the smuggler healing, and see it as weak and ineffective.

I hate to bring this discussion to every topic which touches comparison of healers.. but its like this.

You are right in everything you say..

But thats only while leveling... leveling scoudrel is one of most fun and engaging.

You can do huge amount of little tings like you say.. but most of them doesnt matter at 50.

You can sap .. but this is important only while solo..

You can stun .. but if you are healer + its only melee so it got its little usefulnes in PvP

Same with interrupts .. when do healer interrupt ? Mostly when play solo..

How much can you use stealth ? Ofc during leveling its godsent ... then some use in PvP, but as healer its not so much.

Sawbones healing is like you said "based around sustaining health, not 'reactionary' aka 'oh crap' healing".. but SWTOR is very bursty game. if someone gets hit, he loose at least 1/4th HP.

When it comes to endgame, what matter is specialisation .. to do your job well, not to do many little things 'fine' occasionaly.

Are you sure you play this class?

The stealth mez (sap?) is nice yeah.

Stuns? We have similar CC as other classes in the same roles. The difference is ours are all <10m.

Interrupts? Where's that "s" coming from? And again, melee range, not exactly ideal for a healer.

Stealth? LOL. You so funny.

Stealth is the absolute worst thing healing Operatives/Scoundrels have going for them, and I'll tell you why:

1) We can't do jack **** while in stealth.

2) We can't go back into stealth once combat has been initiated without sacrificing our ability to do jack **** for 10s.

3) We can't even use stealth reliably to avoid fights because we're easy to spot in PvP without the stealth level talents and we can't stealth everyone past mobs in PvE (the group stealth skill sucks).

4) The class' survivability is balanced around Stealth, when we can't do jack **** with it as a healer.

Though I'll admit, stealth makes us beastly at gathering resources on PvE planets.

I'd say power-leveling with quests too, but it isn't like leveling is that difficult to begin with.

Here we go again with the whole Sage/Sorc > all.

Determine what you want to do endgame. If you're playing with a progression focused guild, you will have more luck in having a spot in your Ops group by playing either a Sorc or BH.

If you are playing to enjoy the game and are looking at casual endgame play, any healer is perfectly fine to play. Having a stable group of people to play with will make playing an Operative easier due to the poor mentality concerning them.

There are some incoming changes with the next major patch, 1.2 that shows a lot of potential for improvements with both BH Mercs and Operatives, but with no details, it's currently a wait and see situation.

Overall, Sage/Sorc is a very easy playstyle to learn and even easier to play. Mercs are decent overall. Operatives require a bit more knowledge and have a bit bigger learning curve.

Pick what is going to fit you best for what you want out of your endgame play.

Which healing class is going to be best for anybody is going to be the one that fits their style of play - and the play style of their groups. Each of them has advantages and limitations.

Sage----------fastest rate of healing ~ worst survivability ~ worst dps for a healer/ slowest to solo level

Saw Bones---middle of the road on all accounts

Trooper-------lowest rate of healing ~ best survivability ~ best dps for a healer/ fastest to solo level

If you've got a good team to HM with - go sage

If you're going to qeue solo in WZ all day - take a trooper

If you're going to do both - be a saw bones.
