Best Strategies with Companions

Seems in reading alot of tactics talk people mention alot about what abilities to turn off on Aric/Elara etc.. when in battle.

Which made me think that there's a lot more to companion management than i realize.

Is there a decent guide out there that explains companion mechanics and the best way to optimize their use?

Not sure if there is a guide, per se, but it really comes down to what roles you and your comp are going to be filling. For instance, if you are a Shield spec (tank) and you have Elara equipped, you would probably want to change her to healer stance as it lowers her threat generation, and of course raises her healing output.

It's a matter of checking the companion skill bar, reading each tool tip, and choosing what you think would work for your situation. Essentially, as a tank, you want to keep your companion from grabbing all the damage/healing aggro from you, or it'll only make your job harder.

Likewise, it can be better to force early use of an ability on some companions, the better for positioning.

4X likes to lead by harpooning a target- but some of his best damage prevention means he needs to be in the middle of a group- so if you manually order him to Flameguard a target, you can have him wade in where his abilities will protect him far better from opponents. Likewise, sometimes you'll want to have a look at which mode a companion is in- Aric defaults to single-target, but he's also quite able to AOE groups, which can be handy as well...but if you don't actually choose him to do so, he'll stick to single target mode only.
