DrFaroohk
I can understand maybe one rogue fanfic author trying this out to experiment, but it seems to have caught like wildfire. What is up with that? His name is R2, not Artoo. C3p0. Not Seethreepio. It's Hk-47, not Aitchkayfaurteesehvin. Why do they write out the names like that? Lord_Rezo
Ahem... you know "C" is pronunced "Ce", "3" is pronunced "three", "P", is pronunced "pee" and "O" is pronunced "o"? If you try to say it quickly you would say "Cetreepeeo". And the same for any other ones.
ObiQuiYett
A lot of it is tradition, as that's how it was since the very first release of the Star Wars novelization. It's also to make sure the name stays the same no matter what language it's being spoken, "¡Artoo Detoo eres tú! ¡Eres tú!" not "¡Ere dos De Dos eres tú!"
