I've beta tested FPS games before too, and they wiped as well. Call of Duty 4, for instance, wiped at the end of Beta. It's generally going to happen, because A> There are bugs in the Beta that they don't want causing problems on the live servers. and B> You may have been able to use exploits to get your character where it was.
