  1. Well, it's not new, and you've got a CPU known for kicking out quite a bit of heat.

I have the exact same card. However, at the character selection screen, my card only reaches 65C. There is nothing abnormal about my system. In fact, my selection process for components puts a high value on the most common combinations of hardware.

So... since you have already concluded that the sole cause is the software, explain to me how it is that your copy of the game runs hotter than my copy of the game.

Or is it possible that there is some other variable that you're ignoring.

    Huh.

Seems that your CPU seems to be working quite a bit harder on SWTOR than in that screenshot. Yeah, the CPU temperature is only slightly higher, but you have to remember that CPU coolers don't make heat disappear. They take heat from your CPU and transfer it to the air around the CPU. This is why really good CPU coolers (and you have a really good one) can actually make heat problems worse (for other components). If you have crap ventilation of your case, then all your CPU cooler is doing is acting as a really efficient case heater.

Your video card doesn't have a direct air intake. It sucks air from the case, so unless you give it an intake nearby, it may struggle to get "fresh" air for cooling. This gets even worse if you don't have good exhausts, too. Given your CPU cooler and the standard ATX layout, an upper-back or blowhole exhaust isn't going to be sufficient to pull air from the front of the case.

And with my experience with a Q9450 and an 8800GTS/G92, I can say that a single intake isn't sufficient to provide adequate cooling for both components when they are being stressed simultaneously. When that CPU cooler spools up to moderate levels, its going to be pulling enough air that you'll need more than a 120mm radius intake to supply air to your video card. I had a P182 with two intakes (one active, one passive) and a lower-flow CPU cooler and experienced temperatures similar to what you're seeing.

    ...with games that weren't SWTOR.

So... Since you're already uploading photos, why not give us a photo of the layout of your case, so we can try to figure out why your temperatures are rising so high?

Good post =) i have 4 intakes >.> 2 exhausts at top of case and hydro cooler for cpu my desktops says nice and cool running TOR lol.

  2. Again, you really should read up on this stuff

If something is overheating when you're playing TOR the fault lies in your hardware

I agree you might want to take it up with MSI and ask why there big fancy twin heat sink heat pipe setup sucks. Looks like its a factory oc as well maybe they screwed up there as well.

Not being a smart @#$ but you could just as easily blame MSI if you want to blame the game

  3. The simple fact is that software CANNOT, by definition, harm hardware in any form what so ever. Every piece of hardware has a safety switch - it can never run at a capacity that would harm it. Your CPU can never become too hot and burn, same with graphics card. They will swich off. If they do switch off, it's your fault because you don't have proper cooling. Everyone claiming anything else is talking out of his a*s. Period.

Yeah thank god they do because man sometimes you get a little overzealous with an OC and do an overnight burn in to test it out it will kick off before you fry it >.> saved me a couple times lol.

  4. My Asus ROG laptop gets smoking hot lol.

I keep it very dust free and man you do not want to be behind the rear vents when TOR is running its like fire coming out lmao.

Seems to hold up well though have had 6+ hrs game sessions with no crashes.

I figure TOR will show you if your cooling sucks or the laptop manufacturer skimped on the cooling dept def put it to the test and show its flaws in that area.

  5. F2P basically says, "You don't have to pay, but if you do, you get all of these sweet features!" I've always seen it as a psychological thing, if people are not told they MUST pay to play, then they are more likely to spend money on helping them win.

Or gambling the PW model lol hooked me something fierce >.> my bank account thanked me the day i quit lol.

  6. DDO and LOTRO are perfect examples of how to do F2P right.

There's no real PvP element in either game, so the Pay 2 Win aspect simply isn't there. Most of the stuff on the stores are things which help you level such as pots, XP boosts, and cosmetic stuff.

STO is doing extremely well as F2P also, all the stuff on the STO store can be bought with in game currency once you convert it to Cryptic Points, so if you play heavily you can get anything you want on the store without paying a cent.

Other F2P games can be very different, I think these tend to be the more Eastern designed games without a huge amount of content where you just have to grind to level.

I'd disagree with the comments on F2P games attracting idiots and kids, I've found the DDO, LOTRO and STO communities to be very mature and respectful. The same can't be said about many subscription based MMO's where the community eventually devolves into self-entitled spoiled children who think they own the game because they pay money every month.

Everybody has their own personal tastes in games, and just because a MMO is F2P doesn't mean that it's bad or that it's for kids or people who can't play a sub-based MMO. Or even that when an MMO goes F2P that it has failed, DDO, LOTRO and STO have all increased their active player base by going F2P and increased revenue.

One F2P which I thought was very well done was Allods Online, very much like WoW with some good game mechanics and gorgeous graphics.

Yeah STO took the Perfect World f2p model after they bought it out. It works well until they get greedy. From my experience they let it ride for a year or more then drop all the epic armor and upgrades in cs >.<

  7. Trust me, it's not.

Every F2P MMORPG has the "Wall". That's when F2P ends, and B2W begins. In the end, the B2W will cost you more than P2P by far.

Perfect World games can be played for free its just rough lol.

Had friend who had cs pets worth hundreds of dollars and he didn't pay a penny.

Earned coin from dungeon drops played the market and bought everything with in game coin.

Thats the best way to do f2p imo make it so in game coin can be transferred to cs coin.

  8. I played Perfect World International for a couple years and started in there beta.

There setup was pretty awesome imo and the game definitely wasn't all little kiddy's lol.

The game was pretty hard and the cs items weren't a power thing yet and i stress yet. You could buy charms that would refill your health and mana when they hit 0 so everyone would have them and this was a cs item.

Various clothing and want not tons of fluff items and then the other big one dragon orbs to give your gear + in stats which was a %&*@$ to use One, fail and your level would reset.

The good thing was there you could trade in game coin for cs gold.

So after working hard with my guild mates and my wife for a year they decided to have a 1 year anniversary event dropped some random boxes that would give you the best armor and dragon orbs in the game then bam game over for me lol.

All the hard work was pretty much eliminated right there, was so mad. If it wasn't for that id probably still be playing it now tbh. Was a fun game

  9. Whats the future of crafting?

I would like to hear more on this subject.

Seems as it stands now it is pointless.

The leveling curve makes crafting any of the lower stuff irrelevant for most of the skills.

Will crafting ever be able to produce end game quality gear, mods and weapons?

Obviously it would be very difficult maybe even needing rare mats and such but it would be nice to have the ability to make something epic.

  10. I have the original. I love it. It's very versatile but like anything else it takes some getting used to.

Same here and it's been through Aion and Rift with me. I <3 my Naga lol.

It can be useful for more than just games as well I rarely need my keyboard anymore.

  11. I'm pro cross server lfg and would like to think im quite pleasant lol.

Since my general play hours with my wife and i are from 12am to 4am and have seen the pop in my area be a massive 2 me and her this would pretty much make it impossible to ever get a group lol.

Though amusing at times to have a whole zone to ourselves it isn't very conducive to finding groups and such lol.

  12. Add me to the list x2 for frustrating maintenance times.

Second shift worker husband and wife team and a good chunk of our 30 days has been down time =/ least i got to pay 120 dollars for it >.< what happened to maintenance times being later like 4am or so? This is first mmo that's down during my play time that i have played =/

  13. I swore a few times seeing how vast the differences are. The Empire station has a more clean and modern style to it. Something you would expect to see from a "modern home" which is very futuristic.

This style helps "sell" the Empire as a faction. It knows what it wants to communicate to its citizens/enemies: That they are organized, intimidating and well funded lol

In contrast the Republic station looks more like a neutral docking bay. I picture Deep Space Nine (Star Trek) in my head. A space station that has been passed along by various factions and though she has a sort of charm to it she is a ghetto floating in space.

Another example that came to mind was the scene in "A New Hope" where the rebels are being briefed about the Death Star. That is the Republic Station.

The scene in "Return of the Jedi" where they are being briefed on the second Death Star (notice the clean look the paint and architecture establish) is the Empire Station.

I think i understand why this "slums" theme was chosen for the Republic station and it is very simple. The Republic is not a single minded military organization like the Empire. It is a coalition of hundreds of races and more importantly cultures that coexist and work together. This creates a melting pot of sorts much like New York in the early 20s. IF i am correct and that is what the artists were going for i commend them for it but it tragically did not work out because these Space stations are suppose to represent the the Pride of each faction.

For example while each country is different, they all put special care and effort (and money) into making sure that their Political building which are suppose to be symbols of their pride and power look better than the others. Look at our White House, our Congress buidling. Look at the Red Square in Russia. Look at Buckingham (sp?) Palace in England. China has the Forbidden Kingdom and several modern political building like the city hall building in Yingquan District, Fuyang, Anhui Province.

My point being that the Republic station should be a symbol of Republic pride and patriotism just like the Senate Tower is. Exactly what the Senate Tower is. Only the Tower is for the game, not players.

I like this post =) maybe in a future expansion the Republic will get on top and throw some money at the RF lol. Spruce it up a bit.
