Jesus, they aren't even rare, you just need to be 50 and run some warzone dailies. You'll get one eventually.
I have 2 assembled and 3 unassembled sat in my inventory now.
Throwing back to SWG, I had the Sunriders Destiny crystal which took me ages to get and cost me alot of credits. It was no better than the crystal I already had, but I loved the teal colour and I was willing to work for it, hence I got it.
Every MMO has aesthetic items which are rare. SW:TOR has chosen to award the purple and cyan crystals to people who have gotten the tier 2 gear.
You people are going to great lengths to prove purple isn't a "special" colour, but then why are people who have these PvP sabers not on here complaining that they can't swap them out for blues, greens or reds.
TBH some people will be like me and find it quite boring after a while. Purple has never been a colour my char's have used in KOTOR series or SWG for longer than about 2 mins. The only reason I used it at all in SWG was because of the cold effect it had. If you wanted one with stats at all there you had to become a general of your faction, which took a hell of alot longer than it does to get champion bags here.
It's only so popular because it was unique in the films whether you realise it or not.
1. Your right, they are not rare, they are restricted /spit, to Empire. (This is a major reason people who actually like the color purple are upset.)
2. What 50 doesn't have champion sabers? Your right it isn't hard its restricted to Empire.
3. What you did for teal back in SWG is probably considerably less than many of us would do for Purple. I would, for instance would push an old lady down and take her purse IRL for one, preferrably the mother of some one who claims I want a purple crystal because Sam Jackson had one.
4. People who have the purple/cyan sabers are not complaining because they have what they want. People who want red/green/blue/orange/yellow are not complaining because each and every player who plays the game has a way to actually achieve THESE colors.
The fact that purple was "chose" as a rare color is not the issue. Its that it is restricted to Empire only.
Restricting color crystals in this manner makes as little sense in game as making every person in a country wear the same color shirt.

Its got nothing to do with being rare, its got everything to do with being restricted.
PVP Imps get purple, you can get it day one of pvp at level 50.
Republic does not have access to it, in the same way Imps don't have access to Cyan.
This is absolute crap design.
There is an unconfirmed rumor that republic can get a purple lightsaber from raiding, but again, its unconfirmed and if it were true, there would be a video on you tube.
If it is an obscure quest like the Magenta crystal, thats fine, but considering how insanely obscure that was, no one will ever discover it with out a hint.

Style is something that is very subjective and what some people love, others find unacceptable. The solution to that lies in allowing players to control their own style, a function that the core game currently provides via customizable (orange) gear.
Please see Emmanuel's post on extending orange gear viability into endgame to get an idea of our intentions. Obviously, new appearances will also be added to the game over time as well.

I dont raid on here either and dont really raid anymore on my main MMO, WoW.
But if i choose not to, I do so knowing that i am missing out on stuff,
But i dont expect them to change the game, or change the way something is acquired
just because I dont want to go and get it.

I'm currently lvl 36 Valor rank on my 50 Sentinel. The reason I started this PVP grind was, at the time I was under the impression pvp sabers were purple as the Empire hard cores had gotten them through PVP dailys. With my Cyan saber, I found out that purple is restricted to Empire for PVP.
I did the work, but because I chose Republic I feel hoodwinked. At least with the (incredibly lame, short sighted and inappropriate) Light Side/Dark Side color restrictions, I knew what I was getting into when I chose Republic (I hate Red).

Apology accepted. As I mentioned (I edited above a bit), I'm not a huge fan of the rainbow lightsaber effect the game is giving me currently. My reasoning is that I don't believe that non-movie lightsaber colors belong in a Star Wars game. I realize that I am in the minority and this is just my opinion.
My theory is this: Mace Windu was the only character in Star Wars who had a purple lightsaber (in the movies: The Dark Woman had one in the TCG... still, they were freaking rare). My character is not as powerful, cool, awesome as Mace Windu AND NEVER WILL BE. Therefore, I shouldn't be allowed to have a purple lightsaber (unless I undertake some EXTREME... and I mean extreme task). Since all my characters are going to be roughly equal to everybody elses, players shouldn't be able to get purple crystals (or any other weird colors) easily.
Like I said, that is just my opinion.
But the problem with the (often used) "Mace Windu" arguement, there are about 10 zillion mobs running round using purple sabers, and I AM awesome enough to slaughter these mobs by the 1/2 zillions.

We don't want raid gear, we want the color purple as an EQUALLY accessible option for the Republic.

Rare items have better stats. The purple crystal is (apparently rare). Therefore, I assume the purple crystal has better stats than all other crystals available. The premise of my argument has NEVER been based on the fact that the crystal was desirable because it was purple; it is based on the fact that the crystal has the best stats.
I don't even know how to end this post. I am bewildered beyond belief that anyone could have possibly mistaken that I was interested in the pretty colors of the crystal.
Let me clear this up for the record right now: I AM TALKING ABOUT THE STATS.

Clarification for my arguement then, I just want 2 purple colored crystals, for my sabers. They can have -10 Strenth as the stat on them, don't care.

Putting in an effort to achieve something in a game doesn't turn the game into work.
What the f kind of logic is this?
Are you that dense and simple that it's just not possible to enjoy a game as soon as it requires some sort of skill, effort, and persistence?
If that's the case, then it also explains your belief that people rarely get rich by working hard. You think everything is just handed to people on a platter.
I am not sure why you are playing this game. There are games meant strictly for children, or strictly for casual play, like Sims Online. And those games aren't worth paying a $15 monthly fee for a reason.
Most intelligent adults want some sort of challenge and a reasonable risk/reward ratio when they are playing an MMORPG and paying $15 a month for it.
So your "version" of adult thinks a RNG drop from a PVP daily is a reasonable risk/reward to achieve a purple crystal colored saber, if and ONLY IF your on empire?

It is really infuriating when non-raiders always spout this crap about stuff shouldn't be a "time sink" and they should receive items just for logging in because they have important lives outside of the game and real jobs/relationships that they have to attend to.
As if raiders don't.
I don't get to play the game 24/7. I have a full-time job and bills to pay just like everybody else. For somebody else to come in and tell me that THEIR real-life is so much more important than mine just because they don't raid and I do is insulting.
It is exactly like every other pursuit you could be doing other than gaming. If you invest a lot of time in gaming, you'll get the best/most unique gear possible. If you invest a lot of time in painting, you're going to be a better painter and have better paintings than someone who just shows up and lazily messes around for half and hour and then goes to bed. If you invest time in writing, you're going to have a much better piece than someone who doodles in their diary for 15 minutes before bed.
In ALL those cases, the person who works harder and invests more time gets better stuff. I haven't seen one explanation in this thread that explains why that shouldn't apply to SWTOR.
And they say WE have an ego. Wow.

Secondly, your "examples" are horrendously inaccurate.
"Spending your time gaming gives you better gear" = "Painting every day gives you better paintings?" Serious?
Gaming makes you a better gamer, Painting makes you a better painter. But a gear, much like a painting, can be seen as both bad and good. Some people wouldn't give you a nickel for a piece of art, while others would give you their life savings for the same piece.
Stats are the only thing that should be adjusted via raids.

You're being condescending. It's more to do with a sense of accomplishment. Nobody feels a sense of accomplishment graduating grade school, because everybody can do that. Graduate college and you're ecstatic, though.
Why? Because you put time and effort into being the best you could and were rewarded for it. There's nothing immature about that, it's human nature. We aspire to be personally better yet at the same time we require outside validation of having reached that goal.
You're basically telling somebody that they're being immature because they don't think people who don't work for it should have a Lamborghini. Guess what, only the very wealthy or very rich get that Lamborghini, and usually its because they put in the time and effort to put themselves in a position to afford it.
Again, its not about work, its about restrictiing it. Its restricted to empire, wich is wrong.
I was 50 just after Christmas, completed most of the planets completely in terms of missions, and continue to maintain ahead of the vast majority of players on my server in terms of progress and gearing.
But all of this matters not....
This is a GAME.
Games != Work
Games should NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER = Work. EVER!
BTW - People rarely "get rich". Most people simply "are" rich. The hardest workers I've met in my life are the poorest.

Next time you are at a bar walk up to a couple smokin ladies and tell them you were on a star wars forum last night whining about the fact that you cant choose a purple color in your lightsaber. You will soon realize how lame this is. I dont understand why everyone thinks they are entitled to something and no one else can have something without them having it too. This is such elementary mentality. Guess what, when everyone has something its not really that cool anymore.

The problem right now is not that purple is RARE, it has been arbitrarily restricted to Empire PVP classes.
If it is a raid drop for Republic, that does not = fair. If you can solo acquire an item on 1 faction, you should be able to solo acquire it on another.

I'm fine not having my favorite color as an option, so long as every other player in game is not allowed to have their favorite color either.
Thats the arguement here, an arbitrary color, that has no basis in "Rarity" in "THIS" timeline. That arbitrary color happens to be the favorite color of many people playing this game.
Besides, if some one elses happiness detracts from YOUR happiness, you need to take a good long hard look at your life and decide if you should even continue gaming.
Its.. Its actually kinda vile that some one elses happiness makes you upset, if you think about.
So should your vileness be catered too over a "casual"?
BESIDES no one said it had to be EASY.
Make it a level 50 item, cost 1,000,000 credits and take a weeks worth of dailys and a 4 person boss like the magenta crystal. I dont care.
Its restricted now, it needs to be changed, and made available to those that actually want to be able to achieve it with out rolling empire.

Oh, rare as in any PVP Empire player can get one by doing a daily, and if you are Republic you get a shaft were the sun don't shine? If that is your definition of rare, then yes purple is "rare".
Read at least a FEW posts before posting please.

If that's why you're cancelling your account then good riddance, if you're so fascinated about the color of your lightsaber and why it's not the color you want because of your faction then you're clearly imprudent and I'm glad to see you gone. I wish you luck with whatever MMO you're playing next.

come on guys, if it was easily accesable then every one would have it. so to think that it would help differenciate you from everyone else, youre wrong. in the movies mostly just saw blue green and red, and purple in 2 of the last episodes released and thats why everyone would want one. just like how in the movies, they focused mainly on the light side and the sith empire was a mystery and thatsy why there are way more sith than jedi

I have officially canceled my account due to the FACTION CRYSTAL FIASCO.
Why would such a ignorant decision be made to assign PURPLE to Empire, the faction was already slated to be over populated the way it was. (Cyan to Republic to a lesser extent).
I'm actually quite sick of listing the full page reasons of actual "logical" reasons why purple should not be considered rare, and is in fact NOT a rare color at all in game, cyan on the other hand is RARE amongst mobs in game, but has equal availability as purple, aside from faction restriction. (a week or so of PVP dailys on either side and I'd be amazed if you didn't have 1 if not 2 of the weapons).
I've been 50 for over a week now, and have not seen any sign of a REASONABLY accessible purple crystal, and RAID is not reasonably accessible when the opposing faction can do FRIGGIN DAILYS to get them.
Oh and yes max Artificer/Archeology/Treasure Hunting here too. RE'd almost everyone of the purchaseable crystals to epic quality, nothing special comes of that, just slightly higher stats.
Aesthetics is a PERSONAL choice, and no one who loves blue/green/yelllow/orange/red, is being affected by this design restriction, it targets ONLY the customers/fans who wants purple/cyan and is on the raw of end of the FACTION CRYSTAL FIASCO.

First, the game has been live for what, 7 days and already you are complaining about what you dont have ATM!! Give them time to introduce items into the game before you try to create chaos!!!

I thought I put this thread down an hour ago. Did no one see my /thread? Honestly even if you got 10k people to quit then renew, ea wouldn't care until they lost income. You would have to quit for at least a month en masse, and even then, 10k is like less than 1% of their subs, and how would you know if they fixed it of you quit for real?
