  1. Thanks much. I guess I could have gone to search but with the rest it was just why bother.

Do you have any idea what the heck this refers to? What the glitch where every once in a while you hit an ability and you get the cooldown but the ability didn't fire?

Good god I hope it's not that, lol.

I believe he's actually referring to Ability Delay. There is a huge thread on it in the CSR forums.

EDIT: GalacticKegger posted the link to the thread above.

And while the OP does bring up some valid points, the way its delivered and underlying tone does not help his contentions at all.

  2. "We're very happy in the review scores; we've been getting basically 90s and 80s - the lowest score we have is an 80, on average we have a 90. It's been coming in about where we expected," Ohlen said.

Ohlen can't even do MATHS. If you are basically getting 90's and 80's, how is the average a 90!?!?!?!?!?

  3. Ohlen blames customers for their unreasonable expectations for TOR. He clearly does not understand how the business-to-consumer relationship works.

The main fuction any marketing department / program is to provide information to the consumer on what the product is and the features the product offers as well as to help shape consumer expectations to promote sales.

Thus, the fault lies with BW and not the customer. WTG for blaming the customer again~!

  4. "I don't know why the MMORPG genre is not considered to be a genre," Ohlen shrugged.

Aside from the 5% ASSumption followed by the "I dont know" in the same statement, I can imagine James Ohlen has completely lost credibility as game designer to many gamers.

  5. Yes but in this case the herd-mentality is Sith, and the free-thinkers are Republic. :p

Yet the Jedi code and the Sith code are opposite of what you yourself just described. The Sith are the free thinkers - do w/e the hell you want but you better back it up. Jedi are the ones that conform. What I hate about the Jedi order is that it's too preachy and it reminds me too much of religion - e.g. Christianity, Buddhism.

  6. Obviously you are using external improval (as we can see in your FPS indicator, you are using either Nvidia or ATI tools). Now, please, DISABLE all an.filtering, antialiasing, mipmaping, LOD, etc from your card.

Why? Because we want to see the ACTUAL graphics the game offers, not the ones with make up all over.

And you will get images like the ones linked in the first post.

The fact is: With ALL SETTINGS high this game looks like some 2005 free MMO

    No antialising

    Crappy character textures

FPS issues even on high end rigs

The FPS overlay number is in upper left corner is just FRAPS running in the background......

  7. The MMO genre will continue to exist as long as there is market. Unfortunately for you and others including myself who have been playing mmo's since EQ1 what we view as an mmo and the experience it brings will never be the same.

The current mmo biz model (pioneered by blizzard) is tailored to the casual gamer. Thus we see the implementation of heavy instancing and quicker means of instant gratifications. This has virtually eliminated the need to be reliant on others. TOR is a prime example - leveling to cap and gearing oneself with with top of the line or near top of the line gear can be accomplished easily without the need to even form a group. Cap can be easy reached by solo questing within a week of played game time and gear can be obtained by solo queueing wz and/or by illum dailies.

The worst part for me is the social impact of the tailored-for-the-casual-gamer mmo has brought about. There is no sense of community in mmo's anymore. Reputation means little or next to nothing. People are constantly disrespecting others because it has no effect on their character progression. TOR has been my worst experience in a MMO community to date since EQ1 and I have played numerous titles.

Every time I decide to delve back into a MMO I futility hope to relive the days of old but long gone are those glorious days.

  8. As a side note.. I did not use Khem at all for anything past lev 30 or so.. not once so your statement is not ocmpletely accuracte about SI.

I used Xalek the Jedi (forget her name) and Xalek from the moment I had him.

Esauru is referring to killing Zash at the end of Act 1 when you are bestowed the title of Lord. Zash states in a cutscene before the mission that you should bring Khem only, which excludes the option to bring Andronikos (sp) - Khem was the most geared companion I had anyways at this level so I did never attempted to summon Andonikos for the Zash fight.

  9. Sort of an aside, and I imagine I'm going to look like an mmo noob, which I'm not... but this actually brought up a question I had. Is run-by buffing/buff sharing like this something that evolved in WoW? I never really noticed anyone doing that till I started playing WoW and people would dash by and buff me. It occurred to me to return the favor, but I didn't play long enough for it to become an automatic thing.

Noticed it popping up in TOR, and I'm trying to pay attention and think about it, especially since the buffs aren't level-specific, so it's really helpful. But it may not be a lack of community that makes people react that way... may just be the game they came from? In SWG, you had to stand still for a few minutes for me to buff you, so it wasn't a drive-by deal. In EQ2, I think it only worked on group members (how quickly that game left my head! I can't remember).

I always run-by buff others because it's just the nice thing to do especially when you meet others in the open-world who are solo questing like yourself. Back in the days of EQ1 this wasn't a common practice because buffs were channeled and had a mana cost. I definitely remember the days of EQ1 buffing because I played a druid and SOW was the most requested buff. Buff trading back then was common. I might be wrong in my recollections but iirc the game that people would just run by and buff was DAoC.

  10. I see a lot of words, but it seems to translate into:

"Want to try our patch with more content and some fixes? Give us $15 for another month"

    decisions decisions

I also have the vague suspicion that the next patch will not be released before the first month of play is up in order to bait customers into subscribing.

  11. Garrus' face textures in Mass Effect 1 for PC. Look it up, it is historic evidence showcasing the type of treatment you will get with this MMO for the next years.

It is simply a company that culturally isn't very big on interaction with their playerbase etc.

    1) Ability Delay Threadline, 700+ pages, 7,000+posts, 300,000 views... Next to nothing from BW...

    2) High Resolution Textures, 400+ pages, 4,000+ views... Horrendous official response (read for yourself)...

    3) Numerous CSR complaint threads... Next to nothing from BW...

    4) Ingame Tickets... Automated responses with ticket closures without any resolution...

    5) Completely outsourced phone support...

    6) Nearly no proper lines of communication between Developer and playerbase regarding hot issues on the game's own forums.

    7) Developer prefers to "talk" to community through interviews with review sites or reddit etc as well as Twitter than their own forums. Very, high nosed It appears... perhaps BW is too good for the common forum folk on the game's own forums? Perhaps these threads would get more attention on mmorpg.com, ign, reddit etc?

The list actually does go on but the point stands, a company like this will not be able to run a successful MMO. I love the potential of SW:TOR and that is why it pains me so that it turned out this way. Bioware could learn a lot from: In order... In terms of playerbase support/interaction...

    1) CCP

    2) Blizzard

    3) ArenaNet

    4) Trion

(The above are able to manage an MMO and its playerbase properly)

    1) SOE

    2) Bioware

(The above are simply inferior, careless, not in tune etc.)

Just wanted to add to your list the Horrid FPS thread on it's 11th incarnation (over 10,500+ posts).

Btw, thanks for your continuing effort in documenting and compiling evidence concerning the ability delay.

  12. If you purchased it at Best Buy, I was able to get my money back even with an open box and a used CD-Key. It seems that the volume of customers doing so has precluded Best Buy from following their usual open-box policy.

I know that Amazon is also accepting returns..

Good to know. Too bad I bought the digital one from Origin.

  13. So they took the foundation and made it their own. How is that a bad thing. That happens all the time in software development. They didn't take updates because they didn't need them and they likely modified so much they would not be compatible anyways.

Seems like they used it go get started and then expanded it on their own. What this means is all the people talking about the hero engine really have no idea what the current modified engine is like at all.

They didn't get the engine years ago to launch a game they got it to create a foundation to develop a game. Are they going to sit around and wait for them to go back and comment the code (which is dumb to begin with) they got what they needed and started building on it.

The poster never said it was a bad thing to use a non-inhouse gaming engine. You might want to reread the article again. It's bad when you use a foundation when even the developers of the foundation believed it wasn't ready for others to use it!

If the foundation was so good why hasn't any other top gaming developer (as Zorvan mentioned above) used it for themselves.

  14. This isn't really a true statement. Graphics scaling is ALWAYS horrible. The disparity is too great. Low settings can only go so low without completely compromising the game.

The high-res graphics in TOR are actually pretty amazing. It's clear they had some issues with their coding to get them to process properly, but they're working on and should have it ready by February.

Stephen already admitte4d there are NO high texture graphics except in cutscenes. Stop making statements that are untrue. And please tell me where it is stated that the graphical issues will be fixed by February?
