[Split American and European servers]

The problem here is the poor guys.

 

As an IT systems engineer I know what it is to do maintenance at 4am during the week or (since I don't do games) start at 11pm on a Friday.

The thing is, they expect you will be at your post the next day.

 

Even if you are able to do that you don't usually have teams of hundreds of people to rotate so the same people won't be always doing that; you always have a few guys that will be in, if not all, 90% of the maintenance processes. We are only humans.

 

But as a gamer, I feel those maintenance periods and start swearing ^_^

 

 

Couldn't you get around this problem, at least to some degree, by splitting the servers as suggested, and have the people in NA work on the EU servers and vice versa? With the help of timezone difference everyone could have better working hours?

 

(Disclaimer: I won't bother with actually working out the times, nor do I know to what extent you need physical access to the servers during maintenance.)

Could it be that people who have joined guilds all are registered to the same server, which means that a lot of the people "on" the servers haven't actually gotten their access yet?
