  1. I had high hopes when I saw the thread's title, until I came to the absurd generalisation that any "non-roleplaying" name, itself a contentious and highly subjective value, made one out to be a dribbling twelve year-old.
  2. The ones barking on about being badly done to are usually the ones who treat roleplay as some sort of social powerplay, in which sitting in a cantina with the "best looking" gear one can possibly obtain, or having the "best decorated" house one can possibly afford, earns you the right to troll the roleplaying community channel with more adolescent sexualised flirt/**** jokes that just smack of nerdy virginity.

The ones barking on about being badly done to are usually the ones who pass the buck when it comes to addressing the problem surrounding accessibility and fulfillment in roleplay. It's always the fault of the OOCer, whose mere exists offends them, or the fault of the game, which doesn't treat them as gods. Never is it their own fault for isolating fresh faces if they are not amused by the channel cliques' bad taste in humour. Never is it their own fault for making no effort to actually engage with the setting, instead devoting all their time to social events like gatherings in the cantina, or markets and parties which merely stagnate and further divide budding communities. Never is it their own fault for refusing to take responsibility for helping the wider roleplaying population, instead lazily waving off new blood into joining one already bloated and dull guild, or sending them away if they don't buy into the repetative "luls" of the cantina crew.

It's not about the mechanics of the game, it never has been. At best it's fluff. But if you are so determined to make the argument that without fluff, you cannot roleplay, then you are the problem.

  3. 2. Cin Drallig- Master of all 6 forms, trained by Yoda, nickname "The Troll", was the jedi temple's finest swordsmen during the clone wars and was one of the only hopes in stopping Order 66.

Except that Anakin easily defeated Drallig and a padawan with one hand, while choking another padawan with the other. He was a competant teacher, but he wouldn't make my list when there are others like Caedus out there, and most certainly wouldn't rank above Yoda (his own tutor) or Vader.

  4. Can someone explain to me what exactly is the purpose of the ooc channel? I see it mentioned all over the place so I thought it was to help facilitate RP?

To facilitate the development of cliques and the segregation of the roleplaying community, usually.

Try to get involved in the discussions, stand up to ignorance and bullying, and make some friends if you want to help make them a better place. Infantile in-jokes and sexual innuendo only put people off.

  5. I have no desire to see a bunch of socially awkward teens-to-early adults sitting around trying to flirt with what they believe to be the other sex. And when I say flirt, it should more aptly be called "make horrible sexual advances and references"

Trask Ulgo to the letter, thanks to a select bunch of numpties.

  6. To start a guild of your own, head to Coruscant's Senate District where you will find the registrar underneath the plaza.

But you can always ask a member of another guild what their recruitment requirements are. I'm sure they'd be happy to help you.

  7. I'm not focused on how much I can "put up with in order to RP." I'm concerned with the very real possibility that any additional restrictions implemented will impact other players' ability to create and flesh out the character concepts they're interested in - including my own, and I'm an RPer. There are people clamoring for naming "smell tests" (based on their own personal and highly subjective opinion of what constitutes an RP name) and new rules that basically boil down to "Names can't be words, ever." These are changes that I feel we can do without - that we *must* do without.

In other words, I'm not "putting up with" BW's policies in this regard. I'm against the addition of any unreasonably strict and arbitrary rules that have the potential to harm valid and non-infringing character concepts and playstyles in order to quell the angry mutterings of a select group of RPers. I'm all for swift enforcement against true griefing and harassment of RPers for their choice of playstyle ("breaking my immersion" does NOT fall under this category). I'm all for quality-of-life additions, and we're slated to get some, which is great. More would be even better: Personally, I'd love to see more character and ship customization options (including the ability to update one's appearance).

But you're not asking for shinies; you're asking the devs to overhaul community dynamics. And I just don't see them trying to do that.

    Beautifully put.

  8. I'll be sure to swing by Trask Ulgo to kick off political and religious discussions in /general so you can feel the love.

You're welcome to try - goodness knows others have. A pity Traskers have the maturity not to feed the trolls, eh? I wish I could empathise with your down-trodden self, but that's just not the reality.

  9. What does an out-of-character General chat have to do with roleplay? Are our holy roleplayer eyes so offended by this unrelated channel (Which we can turn off), and the silly names on it, that we simply cannot roleplay? The horror!

I was thinking last night about why so few people RP in starting zones. I talked to a few people on Korriban and Ord Mantell and everyone seemed to be of the opinion that you have to level to about 30 and get away from the starting zones if you wanted to really get into RP. Why is that? Why shouldn't people expect RP starting at level 1 from all players on an RP server? How many potential RPers never get started because they don't seen anything in the first two planets that distinguishes an RP server from standard PvE?

That's their fault for not roleplaying there. I, myself, fully intend to make good use of Tython and Ord Mantell in the hopes of grabbing the interest of potential converts.

  10. The disconnect is that when Bioware labeled a server as RP I made the mistake of thinking they might actually put as much effort in maintaining an RP environment as they do in purging the forums of posts.

There is your problem. Bioware did not intend roleplaying servers to be some form of "Promised Land" for your personal interpretation of what constitutes proper roleplay. Why did you expect them to?

The rules as they stand are fair and rational decisions on Bioware's part.

  11. I don't support this as much as I should, mainly because I like to be a little more spontaneous with these things. If someone is questing out in the world, I'd give them a hand and a "May the Force be with you." Who knows whether or not that person was a roleplayer, or whether or not that person may want to roleplay. But it certainly gives them the opportunity.

If there were a system in place that actively identified roleplayers, or those who wanted to engage in roleplay at that time, no doubt I'd subconsciously gravitate towards those players than I would that quester without the flag.

I don't know. I do support a roleplaying flag, but I'm hesitant at the same time.

  12. No coincidence! As I say, it's a pleasure to meet you. Do give me a buzz at some point, won't you? I would love to hear how Koragg has been getting on.
  13. I have been kept from the game for a good few weeks now, and so the best I can do is work tirelessly on our guild website in order to ensure that the necessary infrastructure and tools that help foster a good community are in place for my return. With a little more elbow grease, the Celestium will be well on its way to making strong contributions to the community of Trask Ulgo.

On a side note, would anyone be so kind as to share with me the signature code that changes the colour of a hyperlink from blue to whatever you choose?

  14. I would like to see chat bubbles and sitting. For me the chat bubbles are a nice to have, but sitting seems really bizarre that so few chairs especially in social areas have the feature.

The lack of chat bubbles isn't a problem for me. If it was implemented, that's great, but I can live without it all the same. However, sitting is definitely a list-topper when it comes to gripes and grievances. There are so many chairs and benches in the game, and I know that players who don't particularly care for roleplay also appreciate little gimmicks like being able to use the chairs. It's a win-win decision for Bioware.

  15. an extension of the default policy to support an RP server.

No extension is required. A roleplaying server is merely an encouraging environment for roleplay, nothing more than that. A ridiculous amount of suspension of disbelief is required to properly immerse oneself in an online medium where floating combat text bursts forth from the flesh of Jedi and Sith. A similarly levitating avatar name is no different, especially considering roleplaying is a choice (a subjective choice, going back to whether Marshmallow is appropriate or not) that not every player on the realm will, and should be forced, to choose.

If you're unhappy with Bioware's logical unwillingness to bow to arbitrary demands on what constitutes "proper roleplay", that's tough.

  16. I am an RPer. I support the rules as they are. Does that make a third camp?

    Likewise.

For a supposed old guy, the logic of "i'm an RPer who doesn't hurt anyone, but any doodyhead who doesn't agree with me should be removed from the server for diminishing my experience" is incredibly unbefitting.

  17. Naming Policy

When creating a character or guild name for Star Wars: The Old Republic, it is encouraged that you select a name that reflects the theme of the game. The guidelines listed below outline the types of names that you can NOT use, and apply to both player or character names, as well as guild names.

    • You may not use any names that violate the General Rules. This includes the use of names that are hateful, defamatory, racist, ethnically offensive, obscene, vulgar, sexually explicit, or any other language that is offensive in nature.

    • You may not use names that are harassing or defamatory to other players or employees of EA, BioWare or LucasArts, e.g. EASUX, Timsretarded, and Biowaresux.

    • You may not use names of any EA, BioWare, or LucasArts employee or service related to Star Wars: The Old Republic.

    • You may not use names of copyrighted or trademarked characters, materials or products, e.g. Coca-Cola or Dr. Pepper.

    • You may not use names from popular culture or media, e.g. Lady Gaga or George Lucas.

    • You may not use names that are religiously or historically significant, e.g. Jesus, Winston Churchill.

    • You may not use proper names of areas within Star Wars for character names. Guild names, however, MAY use the proper names of specific areas to help promote role-playing and realm pride, e.g. Defenders of Tython or Protectors of Hutta.

    • You may not use proper names of non-player characters within Star Wars: The Old Republic, e.g. Darth Malgus, Satele Shan, Yoda, Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker.

    • You may not use names containing titles or ranks within them, e.g. General Supertrooper, Captain Tim, Darth Timmy, Knight Wakey.

    • You may not use names that refer to drugs or that are drug related.

    • You may not use names that contain an inappropriate phrase, sentence or any fragment of a sentence or Leet speak, e.g. uberhaxer, xxspeederxx, lolface, rofl, Noobwhacker, TimmyF**k, kock, fuk.

    • You may not use misspellings or alternative spellings of names that violate any of the above rules, e.g. Hamsolo, Yooda, DorthVader.

    • You may not use gibberish names when creating character, e.g. ajsdu, rifndsw, qweszs.

If you violate any part of the above Naming Policy you will either be assigned a new name, or given the option of changing the name. In addition to this, your account could incur a penalty up to and including account closure.

Where does Octupushead breach the above, if you'll indulge me?
