I'm running a Shield Tech PT and I enjoy PVE with it, but I was thinking of trying a few things out with PVP. In the way back machine I had a Vanguard that I ran a really nice hybrid build with that was mostly defense but used DPS gear in PVP. It was very effective. I was thinking about running shield tech and changing out the mods in the supercommando gear to boost damage but keep the armoring to take advantage of the defensive set bonus.
Is this still viable in the crazy 3.0 cookie cutter days?

Its actually going to work out as the most equitable season yet. There will be nothing but sins on both sides so it will be perfectly balanced. It's freaking genius! BioWare is always one step ahead of me.

If I enjoy the class I'll power through it.
That's a great attitude and I hope you enjoy the Merc, I certainly did until endgame PVP. I offer my input only in the hope that you consider any other class you might enjoy. If you have no affinity for anything else jump in and play the Merc. If anything, ANYTHING feels like it might also be a fit I would recommend that first.

Meh, 2.X concealment everyone said was useless in arenas and I held my own. I think I'll be okay. Just gotta take 'em down with me
You won't do fine. You will get stomped and you will regret the time you put in. Don't do it.

If you PVP do not play a merc.

Periodically Energy Rebounder can proc the effect "Energy Redoubt" that absorbs damage. The amount is listed as "low amount of damage". First of all I'm tired of useless tool tips, and also what is that amount? Has anyone researched this?

Don't
Elaborate please.

You'll dodge 40% of the time while the 6 seconds of Chaff Flare is active. If you look at your character screen and go to defense and put your cursor over defense chance it will tell you something like "your chance to dodge or resist attacks". When i pop Chaff Flare i do see myself resist or dodge attacks. You see it in red pop over your character during combat.
Thanks! I'll go buy a bunch of defense and see where this takes me. I appreciate the info.

Innovative Ordnance gain the most from this if you want to try and get another defensive cooldown (sorta). Using Innovative Ordnance "Chaff Flare" increases defense chance by 25% for 6 seconds with a 45 second Cooldown, If you use 10 defense augments it will bring your base defense chance up to 15%, 40% with while chaff flare is active. Strictly a PVP thing that i use since we are so damn squishy it isn't even funny.
I like the added defense idea, but I'm not sure what it means. We don't have shields or a shield generator so if my defense jumps up to 40% what does that mean? I'll dodge 40% of the time, they will just miss, I'll absorb the damage? I've never really understood what defense does for the Merc.
Little help?

I don't know what the skill is for Commandos but I'm wondering about the Masterful Level utility "Infrared Sensors”.
The skill reads, “Increases stealth detection level by 2, melee and ranged defense by 2%, and reduces the cooldown of Stealth Scan by 5 seconds.”
This skill is clearly for PVP only, but my question is how would 2% defense help a merc in PVP? This isn’t sarcasm I really don’t know how or what stats are increased by this. I’m trying to beef up a little bit so I can last a couple of more seconds against a melee DPS but what stats would I gain from this?

Been healing on my operative in Ranked and getting frustrated that i can't keep up with the burst. I know Mercs have great burst healing, but I'm wondering if they are durable enough.
Is Merc viable to do well in ranked, or is it all about sorc/sage these days?
Merc cannot compete in ranked with any spec. I however play one and want you to play one in ranked as well. If enough Juggs and Guardians complain I'm guessing something will happen.

Just run in and hit /stuck right as the enemy team opens up on you.
Not only will it piss off your team, but the others guys as well since they won't get the killing blow.
Nice! I didn't think of that. It's not like there is any doubt you are going to die anyway so it doesn't really hurt the argument.

From this day forth all mercs should stay in the ranked PVP queue. Run as many as you can. When you load in the other folks in there will of course complain that you are going to lose the match for them. This is true, and it can be a good thing.
While you are dead and the other members are struggling due to being instantly outnumbered and fighting a now unfair Ranked Warzone designed to prove skill, tell them to go to the Forums and yell,
"I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore. Fix mercs or let them convert into Powertechs! They suck and they make me suck!"
I think if all of the boards are singing the same song we might get some attention. At the very least we can share our pain with ALOT of people that will be happy to be a part of our robust mercenary community.

Do not go Merc unless you want to heal or PVE DPS. In PVP they stink out loud and that isn't going to change anytime soon.

I doubled down on a merc because I figured after I got full ranked and really got twitchy with the toon I would be fine in PVP. Alas this isn't the case. The class cannot function comparatively in PVP. There is no surviving and even a 1 on 1 with any melee class is a joke. I know it isn't balanced for 1 on 1 so save your time, but it isn't balanced for 4v4 or 8v8 either from a pvp perspective. Damage is great, survival is non-existent. Since the Powertech can put out as much damage I can say from experience and for certain there is no reason any team should take a DPS merc. Do not do it.
That being said back to my first question anyone know when the next double XP weekend is? I can't do another 60 levels after working to gear out my broken toon so I could use a leg up. Any idea?

I've been gone well over a year and everything has changed so I'm pretty much a noob again. I'm running a shield spec vanguard (36 shield) using DPS gear with a shield generator for PVP. This used to work well in PVP and it still seems good but is this commonplace? The toon feels tanky while still being able to push out some DPS.
Are folks still doing this or am I gimping myself?
If this was answered elsewhere sorry I missed it. I asked on the PVP board but got no responses.

Can't crouch either. I'm an Op so I don't get cover but I use snipe and ex probe alot. If I'm rooted I can't access these abilities.

It's also important too remember that no one is where you think they are. The guy that saw you 15m away was probably right beside you. If you want too see how bad it is, for a laugh, sleep dart someone and sit there and watch. I can sit for 2 full seconds or so and then my target lurches 4 steps in a random direction. I've found if I want to be sure my hidden strike will go off I'd better sleep dart em first too figure out where the heck they are.
They could have done something with stealth detection, but I was chalking all of my stealth fumbles to truly unknown enemy locations.
