Appletaz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I have a question. Why is a name determined to be an invalid name? I'm not talking about names that are already taken (this name is already in use.) I'm not talking about names that are questionably in bad taste (though I did see a cuntalicious wandering around and wondered why they can have that name, and I can't have mine.) I wanted to name my character Apple, like I do in almost every game. It told me the name was invalid. APPLE. Why? Then I wanted to name my Legacy Montfort. I told me it was an invalid name. Why? I changed it to Montford, and it was accepted. Why? What determines a name to be invalid? I am really curious and want to know. Thanks!
Knockerz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I had the same problem and couldn't get my top of the list name.
JVorg Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 See the naming policy under section D here: http://www.swtor.com/legalnotices/roc "Apple" would presumably fall under item 4. "Montfort," I've got no idea, maybe someone on your server already had it.

I wanted to have a character named "Jane"....but apparently this is an invalid name for some reason. Who knows? Someone else in some other thread a while back said he wanted "Jacob" and was unable to get it for the same reason. Edited January 1, 2012 by belialle
CypherDiaz Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Naming Policy Category 13 "You may not use gibberish names when creating character, e.g. ajsdu, rifndsw, qweszs." Then why am I getting mail for Mmmh trying to sell me gold and power-leveling.... fail
xngxng Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Most likely you're not allowed to have names of large companies or other copyrighted or trademarked names.
XevKai Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Yeah I was pissed, Lustmord has been my MMO name for years... and it's "invalid" for swtor :/
Faeld Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 Hmm the word Apple is also a name of a company so that might be why. I know as you stated you used it in other games, but EA/BW might be covering their butts by not allowing it or giving free advertising maybe.

That is ******** BW/EA get your head out of your ***
Epicrisis Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I feel the naming policy is a bit strict. "Apple" is a pretty common word, and most people think of the fruit before the company. I was not allowed to get my first name, nor my last name because they were invalid. They're both very common. However, my friend Lucas was allowed to get Lucas? I was also able to level "Mace" all the way to 32 before finding out "Windu", "Ghosh'Windu", and even "Ghôsh'Windu" are not valid for a Legacy name. Guess I should have checked on the character creation page first. Mace won't be alive for 3000 years, and the Ghosh tribes won't even be founded until after this game's timeline. I'm fine with the Legacy name I ended up with, but it was definitely my 4th choice. Since we're stuck with Legacy names for all of our characters on a server forever, it would be nice if we could be creative with them. The naming policy makes it pretty difficult. I just came into the game happy that its new, and so I should be able to get common names easily. But BioWare then blocks a ton of common names from the get go!

I had mine blocked as well and I checked a trademark naming company. "Maximus" is a commonly used name that is not to a single entity. Not sure why it was blocked. I sent a request to customer service iterating this point and I got no response.
Astronium Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Yeah I was pissed, Lustmord has been my MMO name for years... and it's "invalid" for swtor :/ ... Lustmord is swedish for pleasurekilling well roughly translated, not something apropiate for a name regardless. and words such as lust, **** etc are commonly made invalid.
