Another down time with no consideration for EU

Obviously coudnt be bothered to take on board that eu customers were unhappy about what was done last week... so lets do it again!!!!

And fyi if your IT systems need to be taken down for such long periods of time to do "maintenance" in 2011/2012 youre doing something very very wrong.

They take all servers down at once, when do you propose the do it?

Honestly dont care but for such a large company with so many devs they cant do the euro server maintenance at a different time.

I read in a post that this is because they wont to roll the patch's out at the same time, but sounds more like a cost cutting measure to me.

This is why the rest of the world hates Americans...were all a bunch of freaking losers that care for nothing but ourselves..

I wonder how pissed the Americans would be if they started doing downtime from 3pm EST to 11pm EST every Tuesday?

God - we self-entitled Americans would flip our lids...

I feel bad for the EU's they pay just like we do...They should be refunded this time...

I propose that they don't do all of the servers at once. Easy.

Do half the servers at one time, then half the servers AFTER they determine that the patch was good. Then, everyone would have somewhere to play while their server is down.

Obviously, it would still be best to update servers during "dead" times (for the time zones for which they are designed) so that the other servers do not get slammed. It can be done though, and if they're going to update EVERY WEEK (as the dev posting insinuates), then they really need to consider this.

If you think you are an expert of all IT systems, and know how to schedule updates of huge amounts of data across multiple databases in 2011 and 2012 and can do it faster, then I am sure they would love to offer you a job... after all it is not like it is in the best interest of their business to keep down times minimum and at times that inconvenience as few people as possible.

If they did server maintenance during US peak times, I'd make plans to do something else that day instead of playing. This is what adults do, regardless of nationality. They adjust. Its has nothing to do with self entitlement. Its about growing up and realizing that sometimes, stuff happens and we need to get over it instead of throwing a temper tantrum.

I think people wouldn't mind the downtime as much if they would not do all of the servers at the same time. Do the US servers during US "late night" and the EU servers during the EU "late night". (Same for Oceanic, once they add those servers.)

No one expects them to update and Q&A a patch fast across that many servers. However, I think it's reasonable for them to come up with another solution if they're going to do this EVERY WEEK.

Acutally, if they didn't bother to consider EU, then the servers would go down around 6am central time, not 2am.

This is VERY true. 2am central is not at all good for west coast USA folks either. How many of you go to bed (quit playing) at midnight? ..lol.

For the last ten years I've worked 3rd shift on the USEast coast.

Every MMO I've played in those ten years had their downtimes during my uptime. While off work, in the middle of the night, when I am wide awake and ready to play.

I didn't cry like a baby.

EQ2 always updated their US and EU servers at different times to avoid all of this mess. So, with that model, you would still have a server to play on when you come home from work. Therefore, you should be on this bandwagon as well ;)

Its not rocket science to split their downtime between us and eu. They just choosing not to do it.

This presumes that you know their data and services architecture. It could have been designed that all of the servers rely on some common infrastructure (e.g., their account authentication protocols for one), which would make it impossible to do piecemeal upgrades unless you absolutely knew that your patch would not affect such.

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't.... but my point is that you can't presume it would be easy.

They could do it like Blizzard does and take the servers down for 24 hours. Then *everybody* would be equally pissed off.

They don't do it every week.

From the dev's post:

Generally speaking we are aiming to limit our scheduled maintenance period to once a week, on Tuesdays. However, this week we will perform maintenance on Wednesday due to the New Year’s holiday. We are aiming for this weekly maintenance period to take place in an off-peak time for both North American and European players. We are also aiming to inform players of the precise duration of any weekly maintenance period at least 24 hours before the maintenance begins.

For our new players, this weekly maintenance is done in order to make general improvements and to check performance of the game so that we can continue to provide a consistent, quality experience. Quite often (but not always) after a maintenance period there will a patch to download. Please be sure to update your launcher after any maintenance period.
