It's not critical, you can certainly complete the game without ever touching them, but the characters and events do have further meaning. Take Republic Taris and Imperial Balmorra; Spoiler The Republic Taris Bonus Series expands on Sareesh's character - important when she becomes Supreme Chancellor in the expansions - and both of the Pub Taris and Imp Balmorra bonus series in Chapter 1 actually set the stage for the reversals leading to Imp Taris and Pub Balmorra in Chapter 2 Another example; Alderaan's Republic bonus series introduces the player to Jace Malcolm, former Commander of Havoc Squad during the war, father of Theron Shan, and future Supreme Commander of the Republic Armed Forces, again a character that plays an important role in the expansions. After you finish your origin-story missions on a particular planet from Balmorra (Impside) / Taris (Pubside) up to Corellia, you enable (for that character) a set of repeatable missions that, as noted above, expand on the main <Story Arc> missions for that planet. On Impside Balmorra and Pubside Taris, they are available immediately, no matter your level, but on the later planets, from Nar Shaddaa onwards, they are available at higher levels only, probably (I haven't looked since 7.0 launched) level 60+. Each bonus series starts with an NPC who sends you to visit another NPC, and that NPC asks you to do a series of missions for other NPCs.
