elarahis
Since you can have 3 crew skills and you cannot have more than one crafting skill, it forces you to have 2 gathering skills (I consider mission skills as gathering skills here). It means you can basically have everything you will ever need for your crafting skill so you should never need to buy anything from the GTN ? I don't know why I would tbh. Don't you think 3 crew skills is too many and having only 2 would encourage trading a little more ?
darthbored
those of us that take slicing instead of a mission skill and want to make a blue item only acquired from those mission skills.
Armaso
People will pay for speed and convenience, thats why. Were you born yesterday?
MnMrMustard
Soooo many people, not just slicers! I make more off this than slicing ever made me! WoW is the same way. People will buy materials to level their trade or make specific items people ask for. As long as the market isn't flooded with materials, they sell. So, don't flood the market! Korialstrazs
I buy materials if they cost less than what I would pay to send my alt out on underworld trading missions.
drchocapic
Buying mats from the GTN often turns out cheaper than sending your companions on mission to gather them... I made a investigating/slicing/armstech character recently and by level 20, not only is he richer than my level 22 underworld trading/scavenging/cybertech character but he also has way more scavenging mats. People are always complaining about slicing but I think the real problem is that the crafting system sucks.
Solmyr
People also buy (if they are even for sale on the GTN) Blue, or to the greater extent purple mats, since they are more random to get through missions. Also, as I have already, trying to "power level" my crafting skills. Sometimes I don't like to wait for my companions to do enough missions to get all the mats I need. Especially if I'm doing alot of REing trying to get the blue/purple schematics.
kuzoh
While the structure of SWTOR crew skills does make one more self-sufficient than other MMOs, many people would use the GTN to buy mats if it saves them time. Who wants to spend hours gathering mats to level their respective crafting profession when they could buy a couple stacks off the GTN? The problem right now is the GTN interface is horrendous, making trade difficult for both buyers and sellers.
DamienStark
I have Cybertech/Scavenging/Underworld and I still buy mats off GTN all the time. For one thing, it takes no time and has no uncertainty. If I could get a stack of 8 blue metals with a 1,000 credit mission that will take up 20 minutes of companion work time and has a chance to fail, or I can buy it right away off GTN for 1,100... Might as well grab it quick and move on. For another thing, I'll regularly find people selling them cheaper than the mission cost - especially the gathering mats which people pick up while questing and don't use themselves. I know I'll sell Underworld Fabrics really cheap, since I get them from the special missions and can't use them myself. And if there's purple gear I want to make, with no missions on sale, I'll usually just buy the purple mats rather than keep grinding out metal missions for the next 48 hours hoping to crit... topwebcomics
I have all of the gathering skills to support my crafting skills, I still buy off the GTN. Often for convenience and the fact that when I want to craft, I often have a goal in mind. I'll spend 20-30 minutes crafting, finding that schematic I wanted, whatever, which often takes up more resources than I have on hand, and having the skill doesn't mean I can just get 40 of a resource material that second, and I don't necessarily want to wait a few days. Part of the problem, IMO, is the 2 day limit on putting things on the GTN. If you could put materials on the GTN for 7 days at a time, I think you'd be much more likely to sell your materials (as long as the price was fair). DamienStark
I agree that the 2 day limit is a hassle, particularly given that there's two separate GTN's (one for your faction and one cross-faction on Nar Shadaa) which are not linked, and the faction one is only in the capitol and fleet. The fleet is kind of a nice hub, with gear of all ranges and access to flashpoints, but having to run back to Nar Shadaa once every day or two is tedious... TheSeventhJedi
I actually got an orange synthweaving schematic that uses scavenging materials, and as a synthweaver I took underworld trading and archaeology. So, in order to make that highly desirable schematic, I'll need to trade. In addition, sometimes I outlevel some mats, and I'm willing to take a loss on them to clear space and help my fellow crafters. I can turn around and buy mats above level while I'm there for convenience. As a Jedi Knight, I like to craft my own gear, as well as gear for Kira (so that I never have to take her armor as a mission reward, and can keep T7 geared as well.) Whenever I open up a new tier of armor for her, I'm usually opening up a new tier of armor for me, and I like to craft it all at once. Then I take the nodes I gather to make duplicates to RE in the hopes of learning some blues and purples. I actually like that the market is like this. It'll prevent inflation on mats, because no one with a brain will overpay for them. It'll happen now and then, but they should stay at a decent price. If mats are affordable from multiple avenues, crafting stays profitable.
